The Mosquitos high performance super fast steering rack was made by the same company as Ferrari, now to make sure it has as little bump steer as possible

Only discovered your channel a few weeks ago but have binged watched all 55 episodes in my spare time. Im an F1 engineer, and just wanted to add that Im always impressed by the clear and concise manner in which both yourself and your Dad present sound engineering principals, alongside such passion and enthusiasm. Keep up the great work.

I had an issue with bump steer in my 7 replica. I used a vertical line drawn on a wall and a magnetic laser on the disc. I just shimmed the rack until the laser followed the vertical line as close as possible when I was lifting the suspension from full extension to compression, with the coil overs off obviously. Made a massive difference.

29:36 "and much like tlc i dont want no scrub" thats the best quote of this entire series. Ive binged it over the course of this week and am so sad im almost caught up. Keep up the good work lads Also your descriptions on how scrub, ackerman, and bump steer are some of the best ive ever seen. Ive seen lots of people attempt to describe it in their car builds, but you have definitely done the best job of simply and thoroughly explained it. Mike at stanceworks did a decent job of it but this took it too a whole other level.

Don't forget as the suspension travels it will follow an arc, as from full droop to full compression the track width will widen and then narrow again. Therefore the bumpsteer degree angle could be less
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Жыл бұрын
With double wishbone suspension the track width doesn't change because it's a point between two arcs not just one I talked all about this in relation to my rear suspension in episode 53 if you would like to know more

Another fascinating video. It was great seeing the lathe in action, my late ex father-in-law had a small cutting tool manufacturing business with a workshop full of amazing, very old lathes. Congratulations on your bump steer figure and your knowledge in general. Also your father seems to be the fountain of all wisdom and your videos teach me so much - plus I usually go to the internet to read up more on some of the topics and terms you have introduced. Brilliant!!

What a superb build! On the subject of lathes, one of my friends has a belt driven lathe from 1903! He converted it to run a chain drive electric motor with a hand controlled clutch mechanism... a tad janky, but it works very well & has got surprisingly good accuracy for it's age. Cheers. Leigh. PS: Subbed!

Great video and build. That chassis looks amazing. Bumpsteer….. right off the bat, your unloaded chassis (rolling chassis that’s not fully loaded - including driver) has steering arms that are low compared to the lower A-arm. That being the case you will have bump steer when you finish the car. The idea that the rack arms should be parallel to the ground is false. The rack needs to be the same percentage height from the inner lower A-arm mount as the percentage height of the outer tie-rod from the lower A-arm mount at the upright. The arc that impacts bumpsteer is further reduced by a larger arc created by a significantly shorter rack than the width of the inner suspension arms - which you have. The short of it is it looks like your rack is too low and will place your swing at the bottom of the arc when the suspension is compressed causing toe-in on that side when going over a bump. It’s about measuring the relative relationship of the inner and outer A-arm mounting points and the track rod end then matching the rack to that percentage relative to the inner A-arm mounting point. I know I’ll get a bunch of comments saying it’s wrong, but I’ve been here and had to correct that. The rack position on my rolling chassis looked perfect in every picture but the car had massive bumpsteer when finished. I had to raise the rack 1.25” (in my case) to correct the problem. The formula I derived from that exercise is as described above and is supported by others who do this for a living. Take it as you wish.
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Жыл бұрын
The steering arms are far higher than they would be in an MX5 due to having far more castor and we checked bump steer throughout the entire travel of the suspension and there is no bump steer but thank you for your concern and I'm glad you like the car

The factor I was expecting to be considered was the need to have the inner ball joints, the ones on the ends of the rack, to be the same length apart as the distance between the lower A arm pivots. Doesn't seem to the case here. Comments? Hard mounting the rack is fine but you can compromise with carefully selected poly hardness to give just a little insulation. Rack extension is similar to the Lotus Europa with the Herald/Spitfire rack?
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Жыл бұрын
You can offset the rack ball joint I think it's quite common on cars with large wheels and as long as if you drew a line through all your pivots and they all meet at the same point it's fine but I think it helps to have longer wishbones to pull it off because nothing is ever at crazy angles least of which the track rod.

Hello Andrew and Oliver Are you going you build your own petrol tank? if so please remember to put in an internal reservoir to maintain a constant fuel level when cornering and internal baffles to keep the fuel from sloshing hard in corners I have seen too many KZfaq videos where where the tanks have reservoirs but then do not include baffles on either side of tank center to maintain a constant center of gravity.
