Conscious Consumerism

Күн бұрын

Some events that changed my perspective on life in general, and helped me on this journey to change my consumerism habits. Kind of a more serious video today but next week we are hopefully going to be de-cluttering and trying on my wardrobe, so we'll get back to having fun soon!

I have two acquaintances that lost everything in California wild fires It definitely gives you perspective on what's important/not so important and as you say, also on how much time we waste shopping for/taking care of stuff that could be gone in an instant. Almost everything that is material is replaceable, but your time is not replaceable. Again, much kudos to you for having this wisdom at an early age.

Thank you - hoping more can find the freedom in this way of life perhaps even earlier than me, or without having to go through the "mindless shopping" phase to reach the resolve of "conscious consumerism". Wildfires are particularly scary to me, fire is such an awe-some force of nature with the potential to be so destructive so quickly...

I can relate! I often say things and then regret them or get worried about how they sounded, who heard them, if I got misunderstood etc. This is especially the case when venting about work, but I keep doing it :( Re: perspective change. In my country we see a lot of stuff from Ukraine, for example, today on the news they showed people (mostly elderly people) evacuating, leaving their homes and taking just their pets and passports because their city is under attack and they can't take much. There is a chance that they won't have a home to return to. And then here I am, stressing about if I should buy one or maybe even two of the Sol De Janeiro limited edition mists, even though the reviews were not that great, at least by people I trust. I really want to work on my relationship with stuff and buying this year, because I know that it's not even about the stuff, I don't need it. And I also feel like I have some triggers but I'm not sure what they are or how to deal with them. Your videos lately give me a lot of great things to think about, like this one and the one with about the wishlists. Thank you! ☺

Right? I also find that I keep doing it, it's probably just part of the human experience since the nature of work is that we don't get to fully control our day/activities, so it's easier to get frustrated sometimes, even for relatively easygoing people! Ugh the thought of elderly people having to leave their homes and deal with that horrible situation is humbling too. Like I was trying to say in the video, it's something that helps me keep perspective but also is a little bit of a struggle because I'm aware that we can spiral into anxious thoughts if we focus on the bad parts of the world too much, and we can't base ALL of our life decisions on our fears or worries or the things that "might" happen. By thinking about your habits and patterns and also just observing your own behavior, I think you might eventually be able to identify some triggers for yourself, as this is what happened to me this year - and I'd love to hear your updates!

We have all been there with saying things we wish we hadn’t. And sadly being an adult doesn’t make you immune to making mistakes! Whenever that happens, I just tell myself I’m not a bad person and I will try to do better next time. Affirmations can be helpful and are easy to do, like the saying goes..easier said than done 😂 We are all imperfect and ruminating over mistakes is never productive. Hearing my grandmothers stories of her upbringing has helped me reshape my values because she grew up in poverty and sadly will leave this world without any savings despite having worked her entire life. The system is awful and so few people make it through but I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to possibly leave behind something for my nieces and nephews. Maybe some money for college or I can leave them my apartment so that they can use as a young adult. I gave my older car to my dad and he’s been driving it for the past seven years (Hondas are the best cars!) so he has transportation without a car payment. Little things like that remind me not to overspend on trash that will end up in the landfill. And you’re so right about natural disasters, we had bad storms last week and a confirmed tornado in Houston. Thankfully, there was really only building damages and little loss of life but it makes you think about what if you lost everything and everyone in an instant.. I hope everyone stays safe out there! The weather keeps getting crazier and crazier.

Right? For whatever reason I think I'll eventually grow out of these things, saying things I don't mean, making mistakes....but I guess we don't actually grow out of any of that, we can just handle it in a better way. Oh man yes I remember the flooding when I lived in Houston, and then the freeze a few years back where we lost power for a few days...I heard people were without power recently there too, I hope you were okay! It does feel like the weather is getting more extreme 😬

@@Alexas.nobuyyear Ah yes, that freeze was awful, my pipes busted and we had rolling blackouts to avoid overwhelming the power grid. I’m lucky to be young and I was fairly prepared so I was able to tough it out but I’m still traumatized from it and I am always on high alert for bad weather. This time around I got lucky and didn’t lose power but I had family members and friends that were without power for a few days. Thankfully it wasn’t too hot the first couple days and they were able to find a place to stay with friends. Houston has a great sense of community and we always come together during these times of crisis. But it’s also a good reminder to have an emergency fund in case you need to stay in a hotel or make home repairs!

Luckily I love to throw things out! Often I will pull everything out of one closet and sort into keep and toss! Then I will carefully sort the keep pile into its proper places ( tools, clothes, desk stuff, etc.) This activity always soothes! Also finding lost items is almost like shopping so added bonus there! 🤗

Haha I'm actually doing that in my wardrobe this week, and trying to re-organize so that the "proper places" make more sense and will hopefully serve as limitations on the accumulation of additional things in the future! Learning that the more stuff one has the more arduous this process can be, so it's also motivating to not get back to this level again...

Not sure if those news arrived in the place you live, but there was a massive flood in a brazilian state. Like, really massive, the biggest river of the state's capital reached more than 5 meters tall. The airport is remaning closed till december. Museums, companies, factories, shops and stores, and hundreds os houses were completely ruined. In some smaller cities nearby the capital, the river remained tall for weeks, those people could go back home after weeks living in shelters, knowing that they had lost simply everything they once own. I've been following mininalism for 2 years now, but when this catastrophe happened, once again I realized how society spend energy and money on random stuff and thoughts. Those floods were a direct result from climate change, and we're still talking about buying more and more. Life is super hard...

UGH yes this is exactly what I'm feeling these days - this is insanity! And so crazy how some of us (me) have wasted so much time, energy, money on frivolous things, like makeup or clothing, or thinking about/wanting these things...and you know, I guess the fact that I had not heard about this yet, but in the meantime I have probably seen a bunch of ads selling me lip gloss or some junk off Temu instead of delivering me news like this, (or even ways to help in situations like that flooding) is a testament that society and marketing is focusing on the wrong things as a whole. And then there's the fact that some people seem to spend more time arguing and disagreeing about climate change than thinking about what we can do about it and taking positive action...I'm not a scientist but I can understand that if we are consuming more resources than the Earth can regenerate, this is not a good thing. Thank you so much for your comment!
