I really don't think that anyone is going to have an issue with you making a little money from the ads that we see attached to every video anyway. As long as you don't do a Lilysilk / Athletic Greens sponsorship it's all good 😊

Haha oh man, the idea is laughable seeing as I have actually purchased from Lilysilk due to being influenced by those ads, and ended up decluttering the piece I purchased some time ago now 🤦‍♀️ but at least I wised up before the Athletic Greens ads started! Definitely no sponsorships here, as I don't want to inadvertently prey on people who are in a position like I was, just trying to navigate the constant assault of consumerism...

I pay for KZfaq premium so I don’t have to watch ads, plus it comes with KZfaq music so I get two benefits in one, since I would be paying for music streaming with another platform anyway. I am so bothered by constant sponsorships in every single video for certain creators, but I like their videos so I just fast forward through the sponsorship content.

I‘m gladly consuming the classical music you’re providing us with occasionally 😆 And I like your musings and little „rants“… My sore spot is not clothing or makeup… For me it’s everything that has to do with acquiring knowledge… I love to learn new things. And when I have spotted a new field of interest, that’s the point where my bank account is in real danger… Books, online courses, materials… I’ll get it all… Excessively… I collect instruments, because I want to learn to play one… But I can't decide on which one it should be. My family is no help at all, because even my children want to learn an instrument (at least for some time)… So far I own a practice drum pad (that i can't use thanks to my neighbors), a classical guitar (that's the old one my father-in-law used when he was younger - I cannot learn that, because the only time, I can actually make headspace for that, is in the evenings… and again: the neighbors)… an e-piano (that my now 17 yrs old son wanted so badly (he even plays on it occasionally, but only self taught anime themes)… a bass guitar (that i actually try to learn), a children's classical guitar (that both children played on for about a year, and then didn't want to continue)… and now the 8 yrs old wants to learn accordion (because there’s a music school coming for courses to his school), and the 17 yrs. old want an e-guitar as a birthday present 😫 And you probably know, how much stuff there is to buy, if you get REALLY interested in music and particular instruments… 🤪

I totally feel you on this. Just wanted to chime in though, that any neighbor who feels that classical guitar is loud or annoying to listen to next door, may need to have a reality check...at least you don't have a trumpet!! Maybe there's a time of evening they can agree to 30-60 minutes of "noise"?

@@Alexas.nobuyyear The problem is, that our house is a slab construction with lots of flats and basically no noise canceling. Maybe I’ll try again someday. For the time being I have enough to learn on my bass guitar… plug-in amp + headphones and I’m ready to go… No matter what time it is 😆

I agree with everything you said! Even when people are intentionally trying to be the antithesis of an influencer, people are still at risk of being influenced by them. Since starting to watch your channel (which I absolutely love!!) I have caught myself wanting things that you might have shown. I think it's because I've been in an emotionally vulnerable state, my dad passed away a few weeks ago, and I know I've been caught up in a retail therapy cycle to make me feel better. I'm embarrassed to say that Temu purchases have been abundant lately when I never had the app before his passing. I have strongly considered doing a 6 month no buy challenge for July-December to help offset my overspending and kind of straighten my habits out again because I consider myself a minimalist and yet I've fallen into this trap of buying wayyyyy more than I need. Congratulations on 1k+ subscribers! You have easily become one of my favorite content creators and I'm slowly catching up on watching all your previous videos. 😊
@Alexas.nobuyyear

So sorry to hear about your dad, in difficult times like you're currently experiencing I think it's very natural to fall into comfort behaviors so please don't feel embarrassed! And I would also argue that it's not your fault at all, because you have no control over whether or not Temu exists in the first place - I've been thinking a lot lately about how systems are set up to take advantage of people's hard times or heavy emotions by constantly presenting these options that are so easy, attractive, and promise to make us feel a bit better. Anyway very happy to meet you here and if you do decide to embark on a no buy, (in whatever form it might take), I'm with you! 🥰

At the end of the day we are adults and we should take responsibility for our decisions, not blame someone for ‘influencing’ us. If you are notching up subscribers it is because what you are saying is interesting/thought-provoking/intelligent and, quite frankly, a breath of fresh air on KZfaq. You should receive whatever income you get because you are providing a service - information, entertainment, companionship etc. Remember we can always switch off if you fall down the Lilysilk or Nordgreen rabbit hole😂

This is true! And I do hope I wasn't unintentionally patronizing in anything I said - I just know that I myself have been SO susceptible to seeing products online - proof being that I have actually purchased from the Lilysilk and Nordgreen creator ads🤦‍♀️- that in posting videos here I am perhaps overly concerned that no one feels that from what I am putting out here. It's hard to know where to draw the line because it can all be "problematic" on some scale - advertising in general, PR products sent for free, paid sponsorships...all I know for sure is I do NOT want to be a salesperson by any stretch so paid sponsorships are OUT! 😆
@emmy8526
@emmy8526 2 ай бұрын
I don’t even mind brand sponsorships that much. Lately it’s just becoming more and more obvious when the whole video was filmed just to place the ad, e.g. the video repeats a point the creator has made dozens of times before, the segue into the product is really clumsy and the whole video forefronts that one brand. There’s no content there anymore, it’s just a covert informercial. Partly, brands have gotten increasingly pushy with social media creators, treating them the way they used to treat ad companies. They have to agree to a topic then the video is submitted to the brand for approval and re-edited as requested prior to uploading. Now you’re just a gig worker doing low budget ads for some giant company and souring your connection to your audience.

Please do not change the style of your videos! I don’t want to call anybody out but an no buy influencer you mentioned has changed her style of editing ca. 1-2 years ago and since then her videos are edited so fast that it almost stresses me out to listen (I actually slow down the speed), when her talking about her no buy year and following projects used to be so soothing in the past. She mentioned that she decided to change the editing style because wanted to target a bigger audience. I realized that listening to you is so soothing as her earlier videos were in the past.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 2 күн бұрын
Uh oh! Well I don't think any major editing changes will be made here, since part of my ability to make videos at all is keeping them "less edited" (which still takes quite a bit of time depending on video length!) And I'm quite against the idea of doing things with the purpose of grabbing attention or a wider appeal...I quite like a slower approach and smaller community and I'm lucky to be in a position where this isn't a main source of income and I'll always have a music job (although any incidental adsense earnings are of course appreciated)

Please keep the classical! You are doing great! I am very happy that I found you early on. I don’t think it is an issue with your approach to monetizing your channel. I am very thankful, however, that I won’t be hearing you promoting a certain mattress company that a certain KZfaqr keeps pushing. That is the quickest way I drop subscription to a channel, is the constant selling. I will admit, I watched your what you didn’t buy videos and it felt like shopping. Of course I did not purchase anything, but it was nice to shop a wishlist that would not be purchased vicariously through you. Keep up the great work! Your channel has quickly come to the top of my list as a favorite!

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about with creator and the mattress company, I watched a recent video and thought "seriously, AGAIN?" Also alright, repeated exposure is probably leading to more sales but a mattress isn't something many people probably really need right now, provided they already have a bed! Thank you so much, and the classical will definitely not be going anywhere as it's an essential part of my identity haha. And for better or worse, I'm not having as many things make it to the point of "wanting to buy" them, and actually my next video about the "things I wanted" is actually more about why I've realized I don't need to want the stuff I wanted in the first place 👀

I appreciate that you talk about monetizing. I think it’s OK for someone who is mainly at home. Making the videos IS work and we live Inna society where we cannot work endlessly without being paid for it (well, care work unfortunately, but that’s a different story). And I wouldn’t like you to have sponsorships or something. I am not bothered by you showing stuff because it’s not my style but I find your thoughts of it very considerate. Get on with it! As for monetizing: Your subscribers can still make the decision to pay for KZfaq Premium. I did it at first because my kids sometimes watch KZfaq (monitored of course, we like to watch concerts on KZfaq as some festivals upload them) and I hate the ads popping up in between. Now I really appreciate to be able to support you without having to deal with random ads. It’s a sad story that you kind of have to pay for not being lured to consume but it’s certainly not your responsibility as a small creator to change the system.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
@Alexas.nobuyyear 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! And yes all respect to care workers, I feel like society isn't well-designed to give everyone the breaks that help keep that kind of job more sustainable and mentally healthy. I did kind of forget KZfaq Premium exists, so I guess there it is - the platform itself is going to put ads regardless of creator monetization because they want people to subscribe to their service anyway! So I guess there's not really a way for "the creator" to opt out completely...but don't worry, no sponsorships here! The last thing I want to become is any kind of sales-person.

Congrats on 1k! We are not going to leave lol You deserve to be paid for your content but I understand why you might be concerned. And thanks for being considerate about not wanting to show things or giving a warning beforehand. I’ve been enticed to buy some things that you have shown, like that buffalo A&F sweatshirt 😂 but it’s not your fault, it’s my issue! It’s good exposure therapy to enjoy looking at things without owning them. My friend and I meet up for coffee at the mall often and we take a nice (air conditioned) walk around and window shop. She’s better at not buying things than me but I’m learning from her. Besides I had a dental emergency this week so money will be tight for awhile..ugh I hate being an adult with adult bills 😢 I’m thankful for dental insurance but it’s crazy how expensive it is to take care of your health. I’ll be extending my no buy through the rest of the year regarding specific items/impulse purchases. What has been helping me is writing down everything I “want” to buy as soon as the thought enters my mind and then I write a reason about why I shouldn’t buy it. I will repeatedly look at my list when I feel the urge to shop. For example, I know you don’t care for perfume but I enjoy it however, I read an article on how the fragrance industry uses child labor specifically for jasmine flower picking. And I’m sure it’s the same for other florals. Perfume is now on my no buy list for that reason and by looking at my list it reminds me that a perfume purchase no longer aligns with my values.
@Alexas.nobuyyear

Yeah like I said I felt enticed by my own decluttering video which is absolutely ridiculous seeing as I already own the items!! I am just as likely to fall into the trap of wanting something I see in a video, so it's helping me be conscious about it too. On one hand it's good that there are reasons behind how things are made that make us NOT want to buy them...but on the other hand, it really begs the question as to why child labor is even a thing and wouldn't it just be nice if everything for sale was created responsibly, and everyone could have a fairly nice life!? And no way, I also have a dental procedure next week - not an emergency in my case but something that does have to be done, and is going to be very expensive and possibly scary and painful but hopefully not... 😅

As a bit of a devil's advocate: When we as viewers come to really trust a creator, and if sometimes they share with us a product or item they have found to be exceptional and well worth owning I believe there can be use in that interaction. We can be helped to being a "good consumer" by avoiding a similar but inferior product or item. Not that this should become a major part of your channel but I can still see that it might end up being a service! By now we trust you very implicitly and so would benefit from knowing about anything you really like. Money and purchases are complicated and both can be more carefully handled. You are doing a great job in defining pitfalls and safe measures!
@Alexas.nobuyyear

I see your point! But I think if I do share things I genuinely like, I am still not comfortable with the idea of being paid by the company who creates the product at least at this point. There's something about being a "salesperson" that sits really badly with my concept of my own identity. I don't know exactly why this is, as of course a big part of being a musician involves types of sales too. Part of it may be to do with the fact that as a musician I am undeniably qualified and prepared to defend or explain any opinion I have with the decades of experience that led me to that...and while I may have decades of shopping/consuming experience too (one way or another), it's not something I've been doing with the goals of being the "best" at it (or even the most conscious with my decisions) until just this year. We'll see how it all shapes up as time goes on! Thanks for sharing your view 😊

Glad you like the podcast! I especially enjoy Peter’s commentary and snark. Tangentially related to the power of parasocial influencing and shopping in general, one thing I think is not talked about often enough as a possible factor is how shopping is one of the least conflictual activities many mothers and daughters do together once teenagedom hits, tensions rise and more time starts being spent apart. Starts a generationally repeating positive association with shopping as a blood pressure lowering and bonding activity that lingers. I guess a solution would be to find other things that both enjoy to do super calmly, pleasantly and positively together, so the people and relationship can flourish without involving and benefiting conglomerates. (Or moms should be super unpleasant during clothes shopping trips, lol. Don’t do this.) Regarding ads, as you say, they’re going to be attached to your video anyway; you should benefit from them at least to the tiny fraction the company allocates to the creator. The company does have costs associated with servers, electricity, workers, etc. but they’ve gone way off course with chasing revenue and growth which is why they’re currently getting investigated by the SEC. I usually mute or take out my earphones until they’re over. For instance, YT creators used to be able to set how many ads and where in the video, now the company arbitrarily pops them in wherever or based on some algorithm of their own. Ads in general contribute to shorter attention spans since it’s rare anyone gets to focus on any TV, radio or social media broadcast for more than 10 minutes before some irrelevant noise. But you should definitely share in profits being extracted from your work, like anyone else.

Thanks so much for the recommendation! So many gems in there and love that they highlight how a lot of these self-help creators/writers are making their living "helping" others make their own lives more aspirational, but the way they got their own ideal life is to sell other people on the idea of the aspirational life in the first place. Not the greatest way to explain it but they certainly do a better job! And wow I am going to have to think about the mothers and daughters aspect of shopping. Both for personally relevant reasons in the future as well as how it's possibly shaped "women's attitudes towards shopping" as a whole. Thank you for talking about this!

Seems like you really don't have a choice...the more people that subscribe and that you can reach and educate about being conscious consumers, the more KZfaq is automatically going to use you for ads....given that situation, I'd say keep growing your channel and educating as many people as you can, and hopefully the ads won't sway them. And, if they will use you for ads anyway, you may as well be monetized.
