No Country for Old Men was first a novel written by one of the most revered American writers still living, Cormac McCarthy. People have him pegged for a Nobel Prize in literature possibly. The film is extremely faithful to the novel. The film's dialogue was often lifted word for word from the book. McCarthy's most famous novel, Blood Meridian, was going to be adapted to the screen by Ridley Scott but he gave up. I believe that novel is unfilmable. I hope this comment isn't too tangential. Anyway, great reaction. Thanks so much.
@AtticusFink
@AtticusFink 2 жыл бұрын
The Coen brothers said that the novel was basically the shooting script for the movie. I do like that the novel gives more backstory to Sheriff Bell, but it probably didn't fit well with the pace of the movie. The Road is another novel of McCarthy's that's been adapted to film, and both are great. It's a tough read, really poignant, but still great.
@kylegacy
@kylegacy 2 жыл бұрын
I actually have the script for Blood Meridian that Scott was going to shoot, written by William Monahan. It's absolutely dreadful, and I'm glad it fell through, because it's nothing like the novel. Extremely watered down, and deviates from the text. Tommy Lee Jones acquired the rights to BM and wrote an adaptation in the 90s I believe, but no studio would pick it up because of the violence. I know Tommy's a true fan of Cormac's work, I'm still trying to track that screenplay down. I've read BM several times and I think the biggest issue when it comes to adapting it - much bigger than the violence - is that there's no actual plot. But still, I'd love to see what Tommy did with it.

Excellent review of one of my favorite films! And you had it right. The "coin toss" scene is by far the most popular scene in the movie. It's the one people talk about the most. Javier Bardem was a genius in his role as Anton Chigurh. He's gone on to play many more roles. Definitely check out the movie "Skyfall" where he plays the Bond villain. It was one of my favorite Bond films as well. Enjoy!

I'm pretty sure the store clerk knew his life was in danger well before the coin toss. He kept trying to conclude things and hopefully get rid of Anton when he kept asking "will there be anything else" and Anton kept standing there not allowing it to conclude. So I think the guy knew then that something was going to happen.

You asked an interesting question about how an actor can play a part like Anton Chigurh. I saw an interview with Gene Hackman where he described having to do a movie scene where his character beat a man half to death in the street, sadistically and mercilessly, just to make a point to the people watching him do it. He said it was very hard to do a scene like that because when he made himself into such a character he couldn't help but actually experience some of the emotions that character would have in that moment and it was a very frightening and disturbing experience. The movie he was talking about is called "Unforgiven". If you decide to react to American western movie, "Unforgiven" would be a great choice. It stars and was directed by Clint Eastwood, and it won the Best Picture and Best Director Oscar's for Clint Eastwood, and Best Supporting Actor for Gene Hackman. It is a true classic.

Anton sees himself something like an instrument of fate. Like he told Moss' wife at the end "I got here the same way the coin did." That's why he's always moving forward. I see that your channel is pretty new. I only found this video because I searched for it specifically. Normally I search "movie reaction". But your videos don't come up because your titles don't have those key words. I think you'll get more exposure if you add those key words in. You're a great reactor. You do a good job of showing enough of the movie along with your commentary. Your editing is also very good. I have a few videos of yours to catch up on and you've earned a sub out of me. Great reaction, mate. I can only echo what every other subscriber has mentioned here. And the book is very much worth a read too, Cormac McCarthy's writing is on another plain. Also, a couple of neat little trivia pieces: Anton's look is based on a photograph in a book that Tommy Lee Jones had, of a man sat in the bar area inside a brothel back in 1979 - same clothes, same hair. And Llewelyn's look is based on Cormac himself from 1973 (just google for the pictures). Eerily accurate.

I can't stop thinking about the concept of living strictly by a set of rules or principles, to the point of almost giving up your free will. The lead character in the movie GhostDog is an assassin who strictly lives by the code of Bushido. He isn't a pycho, but he still kills according to his code. Jim Jarmusch is the film maker. I think you would enjoy that film as well.

As a law enforcement officer, Ed Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) was following in the footsteps of his father. His father was to go ahead and light a fire, providing warmth and hope, and it is that hope that keeps us going through the dark times and struggles. But then he says "And then I woke up." And this lets us know that maybe the hope is not real, but we keep going anyway. Which makes it "no country for old men." (This is a line from W.B. Yeats' poem Sailing to Byzantium).

Your review to this masterpiece is the best I've seen set. Like the movie, you knew when to comment and when to stay quiet. When you combine one of the best writers (Cormac McCarthy) with the best directors around (Coen brothers) and the caliber of actors (Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin,Woody Harlson, Barry Corbin and the rest), you get a masterpiece. The fact that the movie had no music also made it easier to hear and appreciate every single word. Bardem won the oscar for best supporting actor. This man takes his craft seriously. The whole cast just did a magnificent job. Thanks for your review. You understood the move every step of the way. Congrats.

I spent summers as a kid in a small town on the Texas border town called Lajitas. It was actually a resort area, but it never took off. Even still, traffikers own that area on the Mex side. There's almost no law enforcement out there and you can see for miles and miles. There's been a couple of ending out there, people shooting down at rafters in the river from "High Hill". Just mind your own business out that way. Don't get involved in anyone elses business. Look up what happened to a bunch of UT student in Matamoros back in the 90s. Difficult to walk/talk with your spinal column missing. The violins in Mexico is no joke.

I just found your channel so i’m not sure if you watched this one yet… but “City of God” is another excellent film that’s very realistic. The acting is phenomenal and the cinematography is some of the best i’ve ever seen.

The writer of this movie has a lot of novels that involve brutal realities and fate. The stories don't end with "the good guy" winning for example. One of his novels "Blood Meridan" is so disturbing and violent, it has been rejected to be made for film. And it's a Western. It's a fascinating story though, and really shows how horrifying that period of history could be. The writer also chose not to use punctuation when he wrote too. Which is funny.

Great review of a great movie! One thing though...while it's true that Moss returning to the scene was a mistake (in spite of his good intentions), the case with the money had the tracker inside. So interested parties stood a decent chance of finding him anyway. On the other hand, there is a chance Moss would've found the tracker and gotten rid of it, but we see how long it took before that ever occurred to him. Moss was clever, but out of his depth. Regarding the water, I've heard it said that no good deed goes unpunished.

George, you are doing me such a favor by watching allot of these movies. Several have been very violent or very dark ones that I haven’t wanted to watch myself, even though I know the acting and directing have won Oscars. This is one of them. Please watch The Deer Hunter…….. incredible movie …. Which I haven’t dared to watch 🙄😁

Everyone says that it was stupid to go back to give the dieing man water. But if he didn't then he wouldn't have left his truck, which wouldn't have put him in flee mode, which WOULD HAVE left his guard down, think no one was after him and would have made him stay home. Anton, the cartel or the syndicate would have found him easily because of the unnoticed tracker. P.S. I guess it wouldn't have mattered because him and his wife still arrived to the same fate either way. So the dumbest thing he did was taking the money.
