I teach film theory to senior-level students at a private high school -- this film always "gets em" thinking. These opening lines set everything up, and like an embroidered tapestry, the film ends on Sheriff Bell narrating his dreams....which repeats the thesis from opening narrative. No Country is in my top 10 films.

That’s how it is for a lot of serial killers. For Anton, maybe he doesn't usually get that kind of kick while “working”, but strangling the deputy was one of the rare occasions where he did.

I like how sheriff bells story about sending the guy to the electric chair gives us a hint to a theme of the movie. He says the paper said it was a crime of passion but yet the guy told bell there was it was a random act. It’s like sheriff bell is the newspaper, trying to make sense of what all is going on around him and trying to give a reason to things. And the guy that killed the girl would be the world around him, doing things that have absolutely no reason or logic behind them.

the character was made to represent a naive "small town" type that acts with undue amounts of trust before symbols of authority, like the mere appearance of a cop car. so lacking the experience to see the obvious red flags, he probably thought something dumb like this is just a plainclothes officer and said to himself "not my business, but it looks official I guess" on seeing the gas canister lol

And all the rest of it too. We can only use the information we have. There's a brief shot of what Chigurh was driving. The deputy parked ahead of Chigurh - cops NEVER do that as far back as anyone can remember. They always keep everything in front of them in full view - not behind. But, in this case, for whatever reason out of the ordinary, the deputy is parked ahead and we'll just have to let it go at that. The guy could get shot right there, so apart from the cattle bolt device we can assume Chigurh is unarmed. We do not know the radio communication. We can almost assume he was a wanted criminal - judging by the phone call. If Chigurh was known to be dangerous, you'd have to take him at gunpoint. Then there's those damn cuffs. The only thing I can think of is if the deputy got him to lay face first on the ground. Makes it easier with less chance of resistance. But still, with what we see in the movie, Chigurh's initial arrest seems at least like a two-man job.

Vastly overrated film. Trying hard to be another FARGO but has more in common with the Coen's sophomoric BLOOD SIMPLE. This scene, all too obviously blocked for the camera, illustrates it. There's no way a solo police officer would have his back turned for an extended period on an insufficiently restrained suspect. And if there was, that needs to be set up - which the film makes no effort to do.
