I'll show you how you can make your own substitute elastic since most stores are sold out! (Since someone asked, here is the link to the video of how I made my mask: • How to make the mask ... )

When I took sewing in high school, we were taught to use a safety pin to direct the threads through.

Tori Morris yes. Safety pin is the most commonly used. But you can use a hair pin.....even stick a cellotape/scotch tape firmly around one end to run it through....

Something I found out about donated tee shirts from family, is men’s tee shirts are knit in the round & put together differently from women’s tee shirts which are tailored. Meaning women’s have side seams, men’s don’t. You can get a continuous long strip from men’s and just roll it up in a ball then cut off what you need.

So simple, so smart. I was using t shirt strips but didn’t think about their springiness.

Thank you! I am making masks for people and started using ties from tshirts because I didn't have elastic, but I was cutting them at 1.5" wide and doing tubes. I didn't think about not doing a seam at all. This will be much easier, faster and I'll get 3xs the ties. So fabulous of you to share this option as it gave me an idea!
@ln50264 жыл бұрын
Jacksonsjob 😊 You can probably still do a 1.5”. My masks had a small opening which is why I cut mine more thinly. Your width might end up being sturdier/robust.

@@ln5026 Very good point. I might try 1" and see what that looks like. If it's flimsy, I can keep that on for my walks. Thanks so much!

You can even use a sock for elastic substitute if you don't want to cut up a T shirt. Cut off the elastic edge and you can cut circular strips and use in the same way

I use a large safety pin for inserting elastic. Just pierce the end of the elastic, close the safety pin and insert the elastic.

The first tool is called a bodkin. Also instead of tying the t-shirt string, pull both ends through a pony bead. I’d cut the string piece a little longer though and don’t forget to knot the ends after stringing on the pony bead. This makes them adjustable.

I use a vegetable skewer push it thru, fold the cloth over the tip and push. You can find elastic hair bands at some dollar stores. I got 10 for a dollar over the head hair bands at a family dollar, in a packet. Some you cut and burn the ends so they don’t fray.

Thank you for sharing this ! I do have a question for you though, if you stretch this material out does it not lose it’s elasticity at some point ? I would think that after constant tugging on it to put the mask on that it would stretch out and not keep the mask snug. I’m just curious.....
@ln50264 жыл бұрын
Donna Bailey - you are correct in that it will lose elasticity at some point. But for the time being, it works better than string or yarn. Perhaps if you make the strips thicker it might hold its elasticity longer. I just needed an option since my mask had small channels and something thicker wouldn’t work for me. (Our island has only one elastic supplier and we have been out for a while. I was getting desperate.)
@igotbandaids4 жыл бұрын
Donna Bailey if that’s all you have. Then, when it gets loose tight a loop or knot into to shorten

I use a crochet hook. Stick it in the casing, grab your tie with the crochet hook and pull it through.
@gprewett90364 жыл бұрын
Love this idea, and finally started using it recently. I've sacrificed at least 3 of our old t-shirts, and have different color 'elastics' now to match the color of my mask. We have decided this is actually softer and more comfortable than elastic! Thanks for sharing this idea online!
@ln50264 жыл бұрын
G Prewett Aw, that’s nice to do color matching! It will stretch out over time but it’s a decent replacement.😊
@gprewett90364 жыл бұрын
@@ln5026 We've found it does stretch after a while, but with enough fabric at the knots we can re-tie the strips shorter so the masks still fit snugly for a while longer. As you probably know, the t-shirt strips are not usually a first choice, but an alternative since no elastic was available anywhere at the time. After over 6 weeks, my big roll of elastic (from China, I think!) finally came today. Almost too late, but I'm thankful to have it!

What are you use to make elastic
@ln50264 жыл бұрын
Nitesh Pandey - I was using cotton knit fabric. Many people also used a t-shirt they had and cut that up. Some people have told me a wider strip may be better than the size I cut. I needed a then strip for the way I made my face mask. You may have to experiment.

Does it matter in which direction you cut the t shirt?
@ln50264 жыл бұрын
Mary I yes, it must be against the grain. If you stretch the tshirt from one side to the other, you will notice a much greater stretch than if you try to stretch from top to bottom. So cut straight across the bottom hem of the shirt.
