I love it! As a kid I worked in a sweater factory in Malden Mass, factory was built in late 1890s in had a dumb waiter to lift fabric to second floor. I was amazed at how it worked with so little effort. I'd love to have this as i can't afford much more, but mostly I love that it self propelled!

I'm pretty sure it's just a pully (or system of pullies) with a counterweight, attached to a passenger box. I'm hoping there's some sort of failsafe installed, like one of those automatically locking belay devices, but I don't see one.

Nice Job! Im planing something like this for my treehouse ;) how you getting down? If the person isn’t heavy enough to bring the counter weight back up ... what do you do?
@tsicby3 жыл бұрын
This rig was not set up properly as far as I can tell. A real rope-pull elevator has a big pulley at the top and the rope in the pulley is a loop that hangs all the way to bottom floor so if you pull on one side it turns the pulley to force you to go up and if you pull the other side it forces you to go down so all the rope is doing is changing the direction of the counter weight. So you can visualize the pulley getting roated clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on which side of the rope loop you pull on, the pulley turns a gear that rotates a shaft that has another pulley on it at the other end which is attached to another rope-loop that connects to the top of the counter weight and travels up to that pulley and then all the way down the shaft to a pulley and back up to connect to the bottom of the counterweight allowing force to be applied to both the top of the counterweight to pull it up and the bottom of the counter weight to pull it down (so the counterweight is "spliced" in to the rope loop which allows you to force that counterweight to go up or down). So you have two pulleys at the top of the shaft with two ropes that are looped up and travel down the entire shaft to the bottom where there are two pulleys (really there are usually multiple pulleys built into the elevator compartment to keep the rope out of the way in a functional position). Then you have a 3rd loop down the middle of the shaft that engages and disengages the brake mechanism. I used to work in theater as a stage hand and there is a fly galley where this same mechanism is used to raise and lower large lighting instruments, scenery, etc. Different breaking mechanism though. You could build it yourself as a project for sure, but without a braking mechanism someone will jump on it and be either too heavy or too light and go flying. Start with building a small working model to visualize how the parts work together. You can probably use a weight stack from gym equipment as your counter-weight system. The weight stack is already pulley based so then you just have to figure out how to anchor it and how to run the weights up high enough, then you could have an easily adjustable counter-weight to make sure your elevator is calibrated for each load.

@@tsicby well explained, thank you so much,, can I get any pictures or a rough scratch so that it makes easy to big a small project 🙏

Wow. While this is very impressive, I think it should be equipped with some sort of failsafe, like maybe one of those belaying devices that will catch you even if your belayer looses consciousness.

I am thinking of building one with counter weights but using water to off set the weight to make it move up and down.

Very interesting elevator. Is it home made, or was it built by an elevator company? Is this elevator historic or modern? What type of building is this in?
@willieopie84696 жыл бұрын
It's a totally homemade elevator that I built. It's made of wood. It's neither modern, nor historic. It's just a common sense basic science elevator that uses counter weight. The building is an old warehouse that I turned into my home.

@willieopie84695 жыл бұрын
When the elevator is going up, look to the right. You'll see the counterweight going down. It's a very well built wooden, reinforced box with concrete blocks inside. The cables of the elevator hold the counterweight from the bottom for extra extra safety.
