The EarthtonesGirl Podcast Present:
NO FEAR SOCK KNITTING CLASS ONLINE
Class 6A: The Kitchener Stitch
NO FEAR SHORTY SOCK PATTERN:
www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...
In Today's class we are going to cover the Kitchener Stitch. There are two methods to this technique that I will go over in detail. The Kitchener stitch is basically weaving in a line of knit stitches to close the toe of a top down sock. It can also be used in other areas of knitted garments.
METHOD 1
Below is a "mantra" or rhyme to help you remember the 4 steps of the Kitchener Stitch
Step 1: Front Needle: Knit, slip off
Step 2: Front Needle: Purl, leave on
Step 3: Back Needle: Purl, slip off
Step 4: Back Needle: Knit, leave on
METHOD 2
Below is a "mantra" or rhyme to hep you remember an alternative 2 step method of working the Kitchener Stitch
Step 1: Front Needle: Knit, slip off, purl
Step 2: Back Needle: Purl slip off, knit
There is a definite rhyme and magic to this technique. I hope you enjoy learning it as much I enjoyed teaching it. That said this is not for everyone and it is more than ok to dislike it.
As always if you have any questions, let me know but I do suggest watching the video, maybe more than once, practicing the steps, taking deep breaths and going slowly. You can do this!!!! Trust me!!
Upcoming Classes:
Class 7: Two At A Time - TBA

I have been a crocheter my entire life. I taught myself to knit 3 years ago because I wanted to make socks. Turns out I can do everything but socks until now. I officially have one sock complete. It is not the prettiest, but it fits and I am proud of it. Thank you for this class. You are awesome.

Denise I have been a knitter and crocheter for over 50 years and I just finished my first pair of knitted socks. I have you to thank for this. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I started making a sock and the heel always made me stop. If by chance I did manage to get passed a very poorly made heel the toe never looked nice. I'm actually very happy with this pair of socks and will be wearing them with pride. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi Denise I’m following for my first ever sock and the thought of knitting a sock scares the life out of me but your step by step guide is so thorough and I’m enjoying knitting it!! I’m just about to pick up stitches for the gusset....a bit scary... and I’m watching all your videos as they come out so I can go back and they’re a bit familiar already. You made Kitchener stitch look easy and it is easy but fiddly so I can’t wait to have a finished sock. Thanks again for a brilliant beginners tutorial. It helps that you have a lovely soothing voice too!!

Another incisive video: Thank you, Denise! The 2-step Kitchener stitch is a Revelation! I LOVE how you showed what to do if you have to undo Kitchener stitch, because I haven't seen any other videos which cover that possibility. You embrace the concept of mistakes...as Challenges! What a wonderful teacher you are.

Wow Denise I just finished my first sock. At 70+ years it is harder to learn NEW stuff, but thanks to your style of teaching and your SWEET ATTITUDE, I have managed to complete my first sock. What a feeling of accomplishment!! THANK YOU for providing a wonderful tutorial step by step to complete a sock. It is something I have wanted to do for years, and after trying many other tutorials I, still, just wasn't able to "get it". I am on cloud 9 this morning after finishing #1 sock, looking forward to #2 and many more sets of socks. Thank you ever so much again

I cannot believe it! I am wearing my first sock! Thank you so much for helping me start this sock journey!!! I'm with you. I love the magic of the Kichener stitch but fret that I may drop a stitch in the middle of doing it. You showing how to undo it has made all the difference in my confidence level. I love my sock and am starting its mate. I made the first one using magic loop. This one I'm going to use 2 circulars to determine which is better for me. Your No Fear Sock Knitting Class is truly a gift to the knitting world. Just imagine how many socks are out there keeping feet warm and toasty because of your generosity. Thank you!

This whole series has been so helpful for me! I've knit 3 pairs of socks before this with varying degrees of success, but the one I'm working on right now is going so much more smoothly thanks to these classes, and my kitchener toe actually turned out right on this one! I usually manage to twist the back stitch somehow and it left a ridge along my toe. Super excited for these classes, thank you so much for taking the time to make them and put them out there in the world!!

Thank you so so much for your No Fear Sock Knitting series. I can’t tell you how many socks I’ve ripped out, got frustrated over, put away and stopped attempting to knit. It was truly a blessing when I stumbled upon your videos. My sister and I would sit and knit hats and scarves during her chemo treatments and she encouraged me to knit socks. I didn’t get the opportunity to sit and knit socks with her but I know she looking down and is beaming with pride that I’ve now completed 2 pairs! I couldn’t have done it without her help and what I call Denise”isms”. (Like-it’s not a race, don’t compare yourself to someone else, etc.” You have a beautiful voice and gift! You have a wonderful teaching style and presence, so soothing and clear :) I still need to watch the classes in full, but have watched some portions a few times to try to master techniques I struggle with (looking at you, corner heel holes lol). I’m excited to see the topic for Class 8 - have been curious about scrappy socks and self-striping as I have a few skeins of those. Will you have a future class in contrast cuffs, heels, and/or toes? I struggle with changing yarn to add in different colors and would love to see your technique. Thank you again!!

I can't believe it... I have actually mastered the, Kitchener Stitch! 🤸‍♀Thank you so much! Along with your clear and steady instruction I found that saying the mantra was such a help. I did the four step method and then the two step method. I liked two step, but needed to be even more careful. I do think had I not done the four step first I would have struggled more with the two step so in all it was fantastic! 👏❤

Thanks SO much for all your wonderful classes, Denise! I feel as you do about the Kitchener stitch. Yay! I also like the two-step way. I was taught that way with no set-up stitches. I always add to the “mantra” the word ‘pivot’ which helps me remember to switch direction, i.e., knit off, pivot, purl on; purl off, pivot, knit on. 👍. Thanks also for teaching us the two needle method, which I now prefer to Magic Loop. I’m looking forward to your future classes, especially about changing colors for the heel and toe sections. You are the best teacher with patience and detailed instruction. I can’t thank you enough.👍😊🧶

Thank you Denise. Again you made a simple stitch much clearer. I love Thant I can see it and read it. As a visual learner it really helps. When I was 6 years old the lady that lived across the street from us taught me how to crochet from sight. I can crochet anything from sight and figure it out. My grandmother used to knit and never had time to teach me. when she passed I got all her knitting stuff. So I taught myself how to knit. I would say I’m an intermediate knitter 😂. There is a lot I don’t know. I love knitting sock and all the different heels. I can follow some patterns but some just don’t make sense to me. I love being able to find different knitters as everyone has their own style and way of knitting. I’m 60 know and disabled with my right hand. My index finger is gone and I’m a thrower. lol. I keep trying to learn continental but just can’t get the tension right. Can’t flick, but I’m interested in Portuguese way of knitting. Maybe someday when I’m not knitting socks for my boyfriend that loves everything I knit for him including Irish sweaters that her truly loves and I’m grateful he loves and wears everything I make home. So on to sock #2. Lol

OMGoodness, I just completed my first sock and I am in love!!! I still need to do the mate. How cool is this! I am so excited about knitting more socks. Thank you so much for making these, “No Fear Sock Knitting” videos. This first pair will be my daughters (we wear the same size). As I said, these are my first knitted socks, and they are not perfect, but I’m okay with that. I am not thrilled with the yarn, but that’s okay too, I plan to do more. You are a fabulous teacher!

Another excellent tutorial. I get the 4 step method of the Kitchener Stitch. I have tried it before but your video is really clear and I have finished a sock 😀😀 So pleased, as I would have preferred to knit a toe up sock to avoid having to do Kitchener stitch. Now I can happily knit both ways. Your video series has so added to my knowledge and confidence to knit socks. Thank you 😊😊🧶

Now I get it! Have copied working the Kitchener stitch watching another knitter. So achieved but not understood. Now your explanation of the 4 stitches in the sequence has hit the bell. I have a finished sock, not exactly an exhibition piece!, and a eureka moment with the Kitchener stitch. Well done - another success for you and a first for me.

Thank you thank you thank you! Maybe ignorance is bliss ... I’m a new knitter and this was my first sock and first time doing the Kitchener stitch. I just followed your directions, went slow and it was done ✅. For sock two I’ll try the two step method. I’m a self taught left handed/backward knitter and your tutorials have been easy to follow and flip!

Kitchener stitch is the neatest way to end a sock. I do like the easy way also. Decrease sock until you have 6 stitches on 2 needle. Then cut a tail . Thread your yarn . Weave it through all 12 stitches. Take needles out. Thread through stitches a second time. Pull tight. Put your needle through the middle point. Turn your sock inside out and sew from the inside. Gives more of a rounded toe shape.

Think I am going to get some small project bags to hold supplies and put them with each project I'm working on. Great idea. Also, I like the cable needles you were using, cables seem so flexible. Oh my gosh, I have a finished, fitting sock! Thank you, Denise! I’m a long-time crocheter who knew how to knit, but didn’t like knitting as much. On a whim, I decided to try knitting again about a month-and-a-half ago. I happened to find a method of purling that worked so much better for me and I decided to try different needles, which made a _huge_ difference, and suddenly I liked knitting. So I decided to start with socks as a first project about two weeks ago because they would actually be useful to me and I didn’t worry about whether the heel would be difficult or anything; I just went step by step and voilà! I still can’t believe I turned a skein of yarn into a sock, but thank you! Time for sock number two! ;)
