So it didn't take me long to get over intarsia and start my after thought heel socks. Needed socks on my needles! After I clipped the yarn and was half way through the controlled unraveling, I noticed my needles were on the wrong row! Took a break by listening to your magical voice, inhaled deeply, rounded up a lot of removable stitch makers and got back on track. WHEW! Joined in my new yarn ASAP and now I happily on my way to decreasing. Many thanks Denise.

Great tutorial. I haven't knit in years & decided to give your video a watch as a refresher. I knit afterthought heels as you do with 2 differences: I complete the tube & I use a size 0/2mm needle to pick up stitches. It's very easy to slip the smaller needle thru each stitch - you just have to remember to knit the first row with the correct needle size (yes, I have forgotten a time or 2).

So glad you enjoyed the tutorial. And yes, that is a great tip. one of the reasons I don’t do it is because my memory is a sieve and I know I will forget to change back to the original needle, so I don’t even bother to share the idea because I know I’m not the only one who will forget.

Thelma writes: Denise, what a beautiful, beautiful tutorial you have presented here on doing the afterthought heal without a waste yarn. Your sweet calming voice, your patience makes the whole process far from daunting. I like your motto, "take your time, no race". How appropriate is that, Denise. I have not done the afterthought heel using the snipping yarn method, but after watching your tutorial, I might do this method next time I knit a pair of socks. Hi Denise! I love your videos and think you are an excellent teacher. I think your “real time” knitting is extremely helpful. I’m excited to try the after thought heel, but have a question. How far (as in length) do you knit the tube before you stop and insert the after thought heel? I’ve read the comments where knitters have knitted the entire tube length and then inserted the heel. I’m interested in inserting the heel before I’ve completed the length of the heel. Thank you for your help and your videos! Have a great Sunday!

Hello Denise, I am so glad you made that video, thank you. I do need however a little pointer here. I have sock tubes and did already a cuff and a toe. But I have no clue as to where I have to place my heel to get the perfect fit. How do you suggest I should go about it? I am afraid I am a relatively new sock knitter…
@EarthtonesgirlPodcast
@EarthtonesgirlPodcast 9 ай бұрын
I do cover this briefly when I talk about where to cut. You will have to be very careful and trace back on the edge stitches to the point in your sock tube when the leg is as long as you want it to be. So count from the cuff down and stop when the leg is long enough. then cut the heel in.

Fabulous video. Thank you! I have tried about 20 time on my sock heel decreases and for some reason I cannot get the Patty Lyons Left Leaning decrease to work for me (I've watched her tutorial as well). The wrapped yarn seems to get stuck behind the twisted stitches and I can't catch it with the point of the needle... Any tips?
@krisvanallen
@krisvanallen 9 ай бұрын
I must have a very high arch! I use the Yarn Harlot's decrease pattern for the toe but use it on the heel instead. I have to start with 6 plain r, instead of her 5. I do 6 plain r, decrease R, 5 plain, decrease r, 4 then dec, 3 then dec, 2 then dec, 1 then dec, then dec every r to the same number as I started for the toe (I do toe up socks). It is rounder and fits better for me. Trial and edit, right? 🤣

What a great tutorial! Thank you so much for doing it. I have one question-why do an after thought heel? When you are making socks you already know you have to do a heel, so why not do it all at once? Just wondering. You are a great teacher!

My first response is WHY NOT! Second, as I said in the beginning. An afterthought heel in self striping creates that beautiful "bulls eye" effect. Plus, heels tend to wear out first so the function of an after thought heel is, it can be replaced!!

Great tutorial! My question: why would you want to do any afterthought heel?

I have only made tube socks because I have knitted down too far before I was supposed to start heel. I am sorry if you have already mentioned this but where would you cut for the heel with the whole tube sock has been knitted? Cannot wait to turn my tubes into grown up socks

I do cover this briefly when I talk about where to cut. You will have to be very careful and trace back on the edge stitches to the point in your sock tube when the leg is as long as you want it to be. So count from the cuff down and stop when the leg is long enough. then cut the heel in.

As usual you have made an excellent tutorial. Thank you! But what is the advantage of the afterthought heel? I understand it is necessary if you are making socks on a knitting machine but why use it when hand knitting?

@@EarthtonesgirlPodcast thank you. The ability to replace an afterthought heel makes perfect sense. Lol I need a way to replace the sock at the ball of my foot. I wear sandals year round so heels are usually ok.

I just started making afterthought heels. I had been using the German Snort row, which I still like. I’ve only used variegated yarns for the afterthought, and I am pretty sure I won’t be able to try self-striping: I can’t just “measure and cut”; the heel has to be on the same round on both socks. It’s just me. I would have to be extrEMEly careful to match stripes, and still might not get a heel round to cut at a place in the striping that I like.

Thelma writes: Denise, may I ask you a question or a tip. How would you overcome a sock cuff from slipping off your leg? Would you need to knit an invisible elastic as you knit the cuffs? Many thanks and would appreciate your thoughts, Denise. Bless you.

Hi Thelma, You made need to go down a needle size or a smaller sock size. Also adding ribbing to a cuff usually helps keep it in place.

Would the after thought heel work with a shadow wrap heel?

I'm not sure I understand you question. A shadow wrap heel can be knit as an afterthought. If that is what you're asking.
