Today we're joined by Olivia Maurel, who was born via surrogacy but didn't find out until much later in life. Today, she speaks out against surrogacy in all forms, claiming that there is no such thing as good surrogacy, and she shares her story with us, beginning with how she first found out the truth about her birth. She explains that she always intrinsically knew something was off, and when she came across surrogacy centers in Kentucky, where she was born, she put the pieces together. She shares her journey of struggling to find a maternal bond growing up, as well as the mental health issues she never knew were actually passed down from her biological mother, and feeling that there is a price tag on her life. We discuss the many reasons one should be opposed to surrogacy, regardless of political affiliation, and explain why despite the trauma of her experience, God is using her to reveal the truth about this sensitive topic. We also give a recap on last night's Republican primary debate and a few viral moments that came out of it.

When I was a teenager I had a friend who was born from surrogacy and she was one of the most messed up people I ever met. She was very kind, but she had been put through so much. I believe she was carried by one of her adopted lesbian mothers, and then they divorced early in her life and abandoned her. On top of that, her father was a random sperm donor and at the time we were friends, she had gotten to contact and meet him for the first time. He straight up told her he didn’t want her or want her in his life, that she was just a means for him to make some cash. Just *so* cruel. I still think of her from time and time and I hope she’s doing alright, but as you can imagine it completely broke her heart.

I would think the main trauma came from being abandoned by her adopted mother not that she was carried in her adopted mom's womb. Also of course the sperm donor "rejecting" her as well doesn't help.

I’m listening to her talk about how her mother abandoned her for a check - left her in the care of strangers at a time she needed her mother the most - and how she then had this deep seated fear of abandonment, this void between her and her adoptive mother, etc - and I just feel like she’s talking about me. My mother and I had these same struggles. I dealt with these same feelings for decades - and went thru this period of seeking to fill the void in all the wrong places and ways. But my mother is my biological mother. She abandoned me in daycare at 6 weeks old, and left me there for 8 hours a day - at a time I was maybe awake for 6 hours a day… makes you wonder if working moms cause the same scars in their children - leaving their children with strangers to go get a check - as surrogates 🤔

Your story is another important topic. Leaving a baby in daycare under the age of 12 months should be illegal, even kids under 3 years of age get negatively affected by daycare. Erica Komisar has written a lot about this topic and most recently talked about the topic on Alex Clark’s podcast The Spillover.

@@y.peffle2802There are overlaps with surrogacy and adoption. Primarily, both involve the procuring of a child by adults wanting "a baby/child of their own". This drive of wanting children has built the fertility business with (the various kinds of) adoption in partnership, creating a robust cover for illegal activities. Unfortunately, adoption is what mankind has made it into; it is not a black & white honorable deed.

I’m adopted and all of the struggles she had I faced too. I was told when I was 5 years old I was adopted. I’m 35 now and remember that day vividly. I instantly felt like I was living with strangers. I learned later on that my birth mother gave me up when I was 8 mos old. She went on to have 3 more children whom she kept. I always wondered as a child, “why? What was it about me that she didn’t like or want?” Little did I know that my birth mother was actually the half sister of my adopted mom. So I grew up knowing her ( my bio mom) as my aunt. Needless to say, there is trauma and much to untangle when a child is removed from their biological mother specifically. I feel her pain on many levels. I just don’t ever want to make light of those of us who are adopted that still endured trauma and pain. Because it is very real and lifelong for us. But God! He restores, He heals, and He renews our hearts and minds amidst the chaos we create.

An old neighbor of mine had 5 children. She told my other neighbor (her half sister) to take one of them because she thought it was too much. She let her sister pick which one she wanted. Her sister chose the youngest one who was too young at the time to remember. He's 9 now and thinks that his brothers are sisters across the street are his cousins. The kids were old enough to remember him being their brother. Saddest part is, he is treated horribly by his adoptive Mom and Dad and his 'cousins' have a much better life. It's sad to think about the resentment he may have if he ever finds out.

I was so broken and confused from that break, that I used to wish I was adopted by loving parents. I would go into the woods and dream of a loving family rescuing me. I have a friend that was seriously abused by her biological mother. Her parents even put her and her siblings into an adoption care in the 60's. My aunt longed to be adopted but was returned to her mom that beat and abused her with no mercy for decades. Life is hard. Hold on to the Bible and Jesus will see us through.

As a counselor, it's interesting to see that a surrogate baby has similar symptoms compared to an emotionally neglected child such as feelings of abandonment, being overbearing to others, attachment issues, and the like. Thank you for speaking out on this subject. I hope it changes hearts and minds.
@overflowinglovephotography2083
@overflowinglovephotography2083 7 ай бұрын
I think that has more to do with her being emotionally neglected rather than her being a surrogate. They obviously did not have an emotionally close relationship. This one instance does not accurately represent surrgacy in general.
@vanessac1721
@vanessac1721 7 ай бұрын
@overflowinglovephotography2083 yeah, I feel like alot of obvious questions were not addressed. Like, yes, your surrogate did not want you but your father and mother (for all intents and purposes) went to some lengths to bring you into this world and to bring you up. You were not abandoned, you were very much wanted. I'd really like to hear her mother's version of events. Because her extremely vague answer about how she just knew as a teenager that her mother wasn't her mother isn't good enough for me. Teenagers are so often at odds with their parents during that time of life. There must be far more to this. But for her to say she was abandoned is a bit insulting to babies who actually have been abandoned by their mom, get put in the system and, fingers crossed, hope to get a place with a family who wants them. I am not necessarily saying I agree with this surrogacy issue but she sounds like spoiled indulged child at times.
@Natalia-zx1qn
@Natalia-zx1qn 7 ай бұрын
@@vanessac1721 I know it can be easy to jump to conclusions but I lean towards believing her story. The bond of a baby in the womb and the mother is stronger than we think and most people don't realize that. I've heard real cases of children of failed abortions who were kept by the mother feeling a deep sense that they are not wanted, even in a loving home. I've also heard of several cases of inherent phobias that were directly associated with an event that happened to the mother while the child with the phobia was in the womb. For example, an adult child having a deep rooted fear of cats without any idea why, only to find out her mother was attacked by a cat while pregnant. So I do believe there is a deeper bond between mother and child than we understand or can appreciate. Trauma can cause brain fog, which I have seen many times, which I can see being a reason for some of her vague answers. It's very easy to blame victims when we don't fully understand them. It's OK if you disagree. I'm providing my counter-argument for some food for thought.

Almost all of this lady's problems with surrogacy also apply with adoption. Like children need to be with their birth mother, not knowing your family history/health, abandonment issues, etc. So even though I'm not a surrogacy advocate, it's not a very good argument against it unless you are saying adoption is bad also.
@Natalia-zx1qn
@Natalia-zx1qn 7 ай бұрын
@@christyostrander734 I see your point but from my perspective, surrogacy is voluntary. Someone is choosing to have a baby through someone else. Adoption is more complicated and is usually necessary. I still see a distinction between surrogacy and adoption. Best case scenario, we all stay with our biological families. Adoption is often used in cases where the biological family cannot, for whatever reason, properly care for the child.

As a woman who’s battled with infertility, had over 10 losses it still stings my heart when someone says “why don’t you just use a surrogate” I always have to go into my prayer closet and ask the Lord to help me handle those comments better. As no a surrogate is just not the solution to feeling more like a woman. But I will say when you have endured so many losses or battled infertility your mind will think of all options. Especially when all you desire is to build your family. And unless you’ve battled with infertility or loss you just can’t comment on what you would or wouldn’t do in those situations. Minds do wander but that’s where the Lord steps in to help us through those moments. "Just consider adoption..." This is something you should not say to a woman struggling with infertility. Adoption is a serious thing that God calls people to. It is not easy and it does not make the pain of infertility go away. Adopted children many times will have behavioral issues because of trauma or abandonment issues... and these behavioral problems can be serious and require professional therapy. Even if the child was adopted as an infant. That is why each person must let God call them in the direction they should go. God is the only one who knows the capacity of a couple, and the road ahead. As Christians, we need to be very very careful not to judge someone else for the choices they make regarding their infertility. Instead, pray for them earnestly, and realize that until you struggle with it yourself, you have no business thinking you know what they are going through, or what they should do.

It depends on the adoptive family. In my day adoption was common because abortion was illegal. It was also illegal to pay for adoptees. I knew these children into adulthood. They were very happy, confident people. Surrogacy is very different, de-humanizing. The baby and mom are commodities.

Not really Jessica...men (in general) aren't good with crying babies. I'm a Christian nanny. My all time favorite family was a 2 dad family with two sons. Dad worked for Williams-Sonoma...other dad was a stay at home parent. Both boys are super sweet, highly intelligent, speak 2 languages, and have traveled around the world. I'm not saying surrogacy is the answer...I truly wish more families adopted...however, babies that come from surrogate moms go on to lead healthy, productive lives

@Mint-kj9kw I don't disagree that children born of a surrogate can go on to live happy lives. But that's not the issue at hand. The issue here is the trauma of separation between a newborn baby and the woman who carried him/her. The separation of a newborn and the only thing in this world that it knows, it's mother. When we don't even separate puppies from the mother until 8+ weeks. People get enraged when they see videos of puppies being taken from their mother, just to see the mother dogs reaction... This interview also touched on other issues, like the loss of genetic information in traditional surrogacys...

Yes. I have a friend who couldn't get pregnant, so she was introduced to the idea adopting embryo's. This was from someone out there who ended up producing several embryo's after ivf but couldn't carry all of them safely. So the "extra" embryo's stayed frozen until adoption. So my friend adopted the twin embryo's and was the surrogate mother, and is raising them. She is a Psychologist and understands trauma and is doing her best along with her husband to love them, bring them healing from trauma and show them the love of Jesus. I hope they overcome any feelings of abandonment by their biological parents. Please pray for these two beautiful children.

You seriously ask people when you meet them how they were conceived? I am from broken family and my husband was raised by gay couple and we are happy and we want a family and what it proves? Nothing. There are different people in various life stages no matter how they were conceived or how broken was their family. Yes, children from broken families have statistically less chance to success in their lives, but there are no such data for children born from donated sperm. And just because your friend doesn't want to have a family, doesn't mean it has something to do with how her husband was conceived. Did you think she might have a frown on her face because there is something else she struggles with and maybe same reason why she doesn't want to have children and it doesn't have to be connected to how they were conceived?

I feel very frustrated by parents who purposely withhold the truth from their children and then shut these children out when they ask questions and seek the truth on their own. It’s very prevalent…and so unfair to the child. The parents think they are “protecting” the child by not revealing the truth, but it ends up leading to hurt and bitterness for all involved. If a child is going to be conceived outside of the family, whether through adoption or surrogacy, the parents at least should be honest and do whatever is necessary to give that child a sense of belonging and love.

@@overflowinglovephotography2083 No, a baby is formed in the womb and becomes attached according to God's plan as it is developing, hearing the mother's voice, feeling her movements, and feeling her emotions (yes, babies feel their mothers emotions). It is literally swimming in her body's fluids, being fed by her blood. The physical attachment is real for 9 months, and doesn't end after birth. A new woman holding that baby is a stranger to that baby. A baby may not be able to communicate that fact, but it senses it. If a woman donates an egg to another woman, then that woman is being used as a baby factory, but you cannot deny that nature creates a bond while babies are in a womb. The egg was ripped from the mother, then the baby is ripped from the surrogate...that baby will subconsciously experience abandonment and attachment issues because that is what biologically happens in that situation ACCORDING TO GOD'S PLAN. You can lie to Mother Nature (which is God's Natural Law), but deep down the baby knows the Truth.

And if they are the carrier, how can a woman's body recover after birth when she hands her baby to someone else?? Nursing helps the uterus contract back to size, bonding with the baby helps stabilize hormone levels, and what kind of drugs would the woman have to take to dry up her milk??? They don't talk about the horrendous repercussions on every single level!!!!! They paint surrogacy like this incredible beautiful selfless thing but it's almost the epitome of selfishness!!

It’s crazy because those of us in the field of psychology know there is a famous study in the 50’s where they took infants away from the mother and saw the negative effects of that. I never even put two and two together between surrogacy and abandonment. Of coarse the child would grow up feeling abandoned because even if they grew up with love it’s not the natural hormonal and phermonic bond that babies seek from the natural mother.

I’m adopted and a Christian. There is a lot of common thoughts and question’s children of adoption share with surrogacy as they grow up, particularly when we don’t look like our parents. The parents here made a huge mistake not being honest with their daughter from the start. That eliminates most of these issues Olivia has experienced. Lies are the real issue. That created the wedge and resentment. Love and truth defeats this. She certainly paints her parents in negative light. That’s sad for everyone involved. Olivia as you mature in your faith, I hope you find forgiveness and reconciliation.

I respectfully disagree. Naturally, lying is wrong and yes she deserved to have known. That’s definitely part of the problem. But Olivia also stated multiple times that she didn’t feel a bond that deep with her mother and dealt with feelings of abandonment her whole life. Knowing the truth wouldn’t have changed that, which is exactly what the issue with surrogacy is. It creates problems for the child that no loving parents can fix. Also, Olivia stated that her parents were the ones to cut contact with her and I actually think she was very balanced in how she spoke of them. Saying they loved her and gave her everything, that they weren’t bad parents.

No it’s not the same. Adoption is an attempt to heal a wound while surrogacy is your parent intentionally creating a situation that will hurt you. It’s a loving self-sacrificial thing to do to give up your child for adoption if you can’t care for her. It’s neither loving nor self-sacrificial to choose to rent a womb and possibly also buy eggs or sperm so that you the parent can have what you want. Adoption and surrogacy are completely different even if both lead to abandonment issues among other things.

I really dont understand how she came to this idea on her own. It makes no sense. If you were not ever told you were not biologically related to your parents, how would you guess that from teenage maternal disconnect and an internet search? Im super confused. I was born and raised in Louisville and have no idea what she istalking about. There are surrogacy centers in every major city its in no way unique to Louisville. There's a big gap in the story here that isnt being explained. You can have all of the issues she had and not be adopted or a surrogacy baby. And especially being she did not grow up knowing she had been abandoned makes it a difficult line to draw for me. Lots ofpeople have horror stories of their birth, upbringing etc and dont have all these same issues. Your mental health problems can of course be tied to not only your upbringing, your dna, and many things environmentally, but they cannot all be blamed on any one circumstance. Many people feel a void due to things that have happened outside of their control, but none of thiswould make anyone wake up one day and suddenly be like "Oh! I bet i was concieved via surrogacy by a woman who carried me and was my biological mother with the dad who raised me with my non biological mother.". Something is missing from this story. Like a big chunk. But i get what she is saying. None of this would have been a problem had she been told the truth, at the very least when she became old enough to understand.

I was adopted at 5 days old, but my adoptive mother and I never connected and I always struggled in my relationship with her. My adoptive parents tried to hide my adoption but when I discovered the truth I was around 12 and it hit me like a ton of bricks. They continued gaslighting me about it till I was in my early 20s. This gave me massive trust issues. I'm the opposite of Olivia-- I don't suffocate people; I avoid getting close to people. Eventually I discovered my birth parents gave me up because they weren't married (this was the 60s), but afterward they got married and had another child. That was an upsetting discovery. I agree with surrogacy being a bad idea overall; it is unnecessary to have a child conceived with the intent to give it away. I am not against adoption altogether-- I'd rather someone put a baby up for adoption than get an abortion, and for children who are here with parents who are unfit, take ill, or pass away, the kids need a home. But I do agree that the records should reflect this, such as birth certificates-- and there should be some process for adoptees to more easily access medical records & history.

I just found mine father last year on the AncestryDNA website. I ordered a kit. I found my house sister and that’s how I found my dad. Everything made so much sense after that! I didn’t even know his name before that. I’m 41 now and found him when I was 40.

Thank you, Ally, for showing us the other side of the story and reaching out to Olivia. 😢 I can relate to her feelings, please people, you can not tie someone else's shoelace, on shoes you have never ever worn yourself. Love and compassion are so important. God bless.

Whew! ALLIE! Mic drop there at the end! So well said... God LOVES HER and is USING HER! I was on the edge of my seat waiting to hear how you responded after she said she had no faith multiple times. Chef's kiss. Perfection. You modeled for the rest of us how to gently hand someone the truth, in love.

But it’s not an accurate depiction of surrgacy. For example, I’m a surrogate and the embryo belongs to the biological mother and father. Im just carrying it for them because the biological mother is unable to because of fertility issues on her end. Surrgacy can be a beautiful thing to help a family struggling with infertility. I wish this episode was not so misleading as to what surrgacy is. This woman’s experience is very uncommon and paints a negative light on such a beautiful thing.

As I was listening to this, I was reminded of the story of Hagar and Ishmael - which is a biblical surrogacy story. Abraham was promised a son from God but he and Sarah took that desire for a son and used someone else to try to fulfill that need, which was Hagar boring Ishmael. Like it was pointed out earlier in the episode, surrogacy creates a problem. I’d like to add though, even though this shouldn’t give us allowance to follow through with sin, but in our sinful decisions, God can bring about good and continue to fulfill His plans. Through Ishmael came the Arabic religion. This isn’t to say that Arabic aren’t redeemable, but threw out history, we can see that Israel has always been at war with Ishmael descendants. In fact, we see it today. Had Abraham listened to God and trusted Him, this probably wouldn’t have been the case. However, our God is a God that can redeem any situation, and He can certainly redeem her’s. It’s amazing that He lead her to this podcast to talk to someone that knows this is true and will share that with her. Thank you, Allie.

It’s not an accurate representation of surrgacy though. Most surrogates are not even related to the baby they are carrying. This story is rare because she was carried by her biological mother. The host said this is no longer widely practiced and is even illegal.

I feel like I don’t have the words but listening at how you shared that she is valuable in Gods eyes and that she has a purpose whether she believe is Christ or not, that was said beautifully. I always learn so much from you. Thank you! 😊

Surrogacy seems selfish to me. There are so many children that need good parents. I can relate to the abandonment part. My mother left me alone (just for some hours) in our apartment when I was three. She was a single mother and my only care taker, she was with me the whole first three years and then she was gone for some hours and since then I am so scared that I get left. More than a year later she had to go to the hospital for five weeks and I had to live with two different families which I didn’t know. My mother loved me but I was hunted by the fear that could do something or be somehow wrong and then my mother would leave me. My mother died when I was 12 years this made me only more scared of being left. I can not imagine how it must be never having a real mother. It’s just so sad.

This is why these stories need to be told so people can have an understanding of what they're doing to children. It may not change the minds of everyone, but you never know who it will impact and how many kids could be saved from this tragedy because of these stories being out.

Your story reminds me of parts of mine. When my father left and divorced us, I think I had similar feelings and fears when my mother had to leave to work. When I am home alone as an adult, I still find myself anxiously ‘waiting for her to come home.’

@@KirisutonoNeko Yes. It’s incredibly how much impact our parents have on us. I saw my father three times a year for some hours. I always sat at the window and waited for him, sometimes he came an hour later, one time he didn’t come at all. Since then I get so dysregulated (my nervous system, my emotional side of the brain takes over…) if I have to wait for other people. I am so grateful that I found a writing technique that gets me reregulated after something had put me into this place of anxiety and resentment. :)

Very interesting, educational and inspiring. Thank you for this interview. This woman'a points make total sense and we just need to be made aware of these aspects, because I think we simply haven't thought surrogacy through.... As a side note, hearing her talk about her mental health struggles and feeling of abandonment has given me a warm feeling of "I am not alone". Many of us experience abandonment, in various forms and circumstances, and I find this lady super brave and I hope she gets a platform and followers.

This woman needs therapy. She has a troublesome relationship with her parents that could be due to the surrogacy, but it could even be something else. It's too simplistic to blame it all on surrogacy.

Wow, Allie! I absolutely love what you’re doing! This is the first time I’ve watched you with a non-Christian guest (I’m new to your channel but definitely a fan 🙋‍♀️). I love that you used your platform to share Olivia’s message, showing the love of Christ. I also love your boldness in the end when you asked if she was a Christian and gently, kindly, and with compassion you shared the Gospel with her on a live stream having no idea how she would respond! I love your dedication, witness for Christ, and ministry! Keep up the good work, Sister! Also, this was very informative. I have never actually realized the trauma surrogacy causes, yet now I see how cruel it is to snatch a newborn away from his/her mother. Thank you for addressing this!

I am continually impressed, by the level of investigative journalism- that you display on your channel. I’m a child of adoption, this past holiday I was taken aback by the sentiment & common beliefs that “children have no memory of what happens till a certain age, so don’t worry about the impact you have on them” The flippancy in which it was said to my face, astonished me. I will personally spend the rest of my life dismantling & burying that argument into its grave. There is right & there is wrong. Life isn’t black & white. There is however some things, that are black & white. It’s time our culture took a stand.

Very eye opening. Olivia I hope you finally come to know your Heavenly Father who literally wrote his name into your DNA. HE is the reason we live and move and have our being. My father passed away when I was only 10. Shortly after Jesus came into my heart and filled the emptiness. Everytime I felt the sorrow of my Dad not being here on earth when I needed him Christ filled that need.

I grew up with my biological parents and grandparents very active in my family, but never felt like I belonged. My grandmother was from the other side of Canada and I never really knew her part of the family. I finally went out and met them in 2023 and I found my people. That was the part of me that was missing and I felt like I was home.

Keep exposing these stories. The selfishness of the adults are exposed by cutting her out of their lives for struggling with what they did. True love says, "I'm sorry we hurt you. We were wrong. How can we move forward?" That should be every ivf/surrogate parents response when this happens. Otherwise, you prove to us all that you were only in it for yourself.

Kids of divorce suffer much of this, my mother was adopted and was a product of rape, I was so proud of the grandmother I never met how she made sure her child lived, even with that knowledge my mother still felt that abandonment her whole life. I was a only child and at 6 my parents split, so that fear of abandonment is a part of me too. I wish we could go back to the family of the Bible.
