0:00 Introduction: Frequent urination at night (nocturia)
0:27 Nocturia explained
1:13 Frequent urination causes
4:10 What causes high insulin before bed?
4:50 What you can do for nocturia
In this video, let’s talk about what you can do if you experience frequent urination at night, also called nocturia. Urinary frequency is not a problem with the bladder. It’s a dietary problem.
Nocturia can lead to:
• Fatigue
• Blood sugar problems
• Carb cravings
• Increased cortisol (which affects your mood)
• Issues with your cognitive function
This problem happens equally in men and women. Frequent urination in women is often thought to be caused by a urinary tract infection, and frequent urination in men is often thought to be caused by an enlarged prostate. But, while these could be factors, there is something else that is more common.
Diabetics nearly always have problems with urinary frequency. People who have diabetes have high blood sugar levels and high levels of insulin (unless they have type 1 diabetes). In a study related to dogs, it was found that when insulin was administered to the dogs, they had significant urine output. Insulin inhibits the adrenal hormones that hold urine. High levels of insulin are also nearly always found in people who have overactive bladder syndrome.
Doctors never seem to test insulin levels. But, I believe the most likely situation that causes urinary frequency is high levels of insulin.
Snacking at night is a big cause of high insulin throughout the night. Even a low-carb snack will raise insulin.
What you can do for nocturia:
• Stop snacking at night (don’t eat or drink after 6:30 pm)
• Consume less than 30g of carbs per day (Healthy Keto diet)
• Do intermittent fasting

After 1 month of not eating 5+ hours before my bedtime and also not drinking any fluids 5 hours before bedtime I have finally stopped waking up to urinate. I've woken up only twice within a month. Thank you for this info! It's changed my life. I'm finally getting much better sleep and my quality of life is so much better! Update: 2 months after this comment I now only drink water when thirsty. My kidneys no longer hurt and I can eat and drink fluids 2 to 3 hours prior to bedtime and I still no longer wake up to use the bathroom. My sleep has improved so much. 6 month edit: I still no longer wake up to urinate. Occasionally once every week or two I will. Also for anyone wondering I'm 34 years old. 1 year edit. Everything is still good as it has been. The best thing about not waking up to urinate is better sleep. I hope this comment has helped. I only drink water when I'm thirsty and I don't drink or eat anything a few hours before bed and that's good enough for me. I eat my last meal about 7pm or 8pm and go to bed about 11pm or 12am everyday.

My nighttime urination went from 4 times per night, to none, after just 3 days. In another video on this same topic, you connect this even more to insulin resistance and recommend keto. I was not prepared to go that far. But I decided it would not be hard to just avoid the sugar gang (sugar, grains, and starches). I did not avoid them completely. But I reduced them significantly. After just 3 days, I slept through the night without needing the bathroom even once. And every night since then has been the same, rarely ever needing the bathroom at night. So I decided to continue avoiding the sugar gang. After just 3 weeks, my E.D disappeared. And after 3 months, I noticed that my belt had gone from its largest setting to its smallest one. I have almost no fat now, even though I have been eating more fatty cuts of meat, on purpose, as well as eggs and real butter. I am feeling better than I have in ages. Thank you Dr Berg.

@@akibjabarbhat9589, are you saying that you frequently have urges to urinate that are too strong to resist, or that it just trickles out on its own with no ability to stop it? The only real difference between those two things is that, with the first, you feel the urge and cannot resist it, and with the second, you don't even feel the urge, there's just no control. The first would be some sort of spasm of the bladder any time it's not empty. The other would be either no muscle control to stop the flow, or no ability to sense the presence of urine in the bladder. I'm not sure it would make much of a difference in the overall effect. But it might make a difference in tracing what the problem is.

This is so true! Snacking is the issue for me. HOWEVER, I have also discovered the link between sleeplessness and frequent urinating. It’s the food that keeps me awake, and being awake prevents some mechanism that shuts off the urge to urinate when we’re in a deep sleep.
@kumarrajen2797
@kumarrajen2797 9 ай бұрын
Dr Berg, there is another important factor related to frequency of urination that is commonly ignored by many. This is the outside temp and amount of heat loss from body. Higher the amount of heat loss from body, for example in winters, higher the frequency of urination. So keep your body warm during sleep.

At 56 years of age, after shifting to a low carb diet ten years ago and combining it with a moderate intermittent fasting scheme the last couple of years (approx eating window: 8.30 am - I get up at 4.20 am - to 18.30), I have gotten Nocturia down to once every three nights on average. Futhermore, I have low cholesterol (despite eating a lot of fats), low blood fats, stable blood sugar, healthy blood pressure levels, and most startling of all; little to no pain in my neck despite massive osteoarthritis originating from 3½ decades of heavy steel construction work. My body seems to have become inflammation free. I know it is purely anecdotic evidence, but as far as I`m concerned, I have to conclude that simple sugars are poison, only to be used as spice and treats, like alcohol, and carbs as such should be kept to a minimum.

This was randomly recommended to me. I subbed because of it. I used to urinate frequently at night, almost hourly. I recently started intermittent fasting, part of which meant I was no longer eating after 7 PM. It didn’t occur to me until I watched this, I haven’t been urinating at night since then.

Thank you Dr. Berg. I was urinating so much at night over the last year and my OBGYN didn’t know why. I started researching and the more I looked at your videos the dots connected. I have high blood pressure. My primary doctor told me that I needed to go on a metabolic diet because I am Pre diabetic and my cholesterol is slightly elevated. I have been following your keto videos and started the ketogenic IF. The third day the night time frequent urination has greatly reduced, the brain fog has reduced, my thinking is more clear and thanks to the bulletproof coffee the appetite has reduced! I can’t wait to experience the other benefits of Keto IF lifestyle! Thank you Dr. Berg. 🙏🏼

Good and interesting information. I have found in my own case that diet has had a big impact on sleep. I went vegetarian about a year ago. After a couple of months on the diet I found I needed about 2 less hours of sleep a night, and also I was no longer chronically thirsty and therefore drinking too much water leading to nocturia. I have gone from waking about every 2 hours to waking once or twice a night, a big improvement for me. Since I am not diabetic I figure the diet has lowered my cortisol levels. Interesting about the effect of elevated insulin on adrenal hormones and urinary frequency. I am an RN, I will be able to use this info to help my patients. Thanks Dr. Berg!

Saw Palmetto will stop nocturia, slow stream, urgency, dripping, and the other symptoms, in me. I do not have diabetes and I have to get up to go maybe once at night, and my dogs wake me up, not my bladder. I do not eat at night. I drink water at night. Sometimes Gingerale. I fast one day each week.( I am Catholic so it is Friday). I do not eat carbs, except for a dinner roll at dinner. I have been doing the Keto diet for many years. I was not eating starch, carbohydrates, or much sugar, (And NO fake sweetners), So, I live on meat, potatoes, and vegtables, with un-sweet tea. I only drink; Water, tea, milk, and cold pressed fruit juice. I can always learn more!!! I watched your podcast, and I will be at my Dr. of 43 years, a board certified Internal medicine Dr.... On August 2nd. I will tell him about this program. I have a kidney issue that appears to be calcium deposits, so my Dr. Put me on MK7, and Calcimate Complete. So, I will see how I am doing and drop you a comment when I get my results. I get a copy of my bloodwork and urinalysis sent to me after each visit. That way I can raise low levels of some vitamin, and lower high levels of other vitamins. Brother James Kendall Moore OSB OFS OSC ✝️

I’ve watched many videos on you tube about prostate/urinary issues. I tried this and it made an immediate difference. I was a nighttime snacker, and I mean every night! I stopped 3 days ago. Here’s what happened….I was getting up 5 or 6 times every night. (I write a journal daily so I track it obsessively) The last three nights I got up 2 times! Not bad for a 67 year old. I know it may be too early to attribute this dramatic improvement to stopping night time snacking…but I am anyway. Thanks Dr., this really does work!

OMG thank you so much, Doc! That all makes so much sense. I have been overactive as long as I can remember, and it only got worse with age. Checking in today after seeing the video yesterday morning. I am taking a three-prong approach: reduce carbs + reduce caffeine (drastically) + no drinking after 6 pm. I am already on a no grains, 18/6 IF diet for a few years, and more than ready to kick it up a notch! Couldn't be more stoked! Went up only twice the first night, which is a great improvement already. And I love the calmness in body and mind, instead of the caffeine jitteryness. Thanks again Doc!

Dr Berg, About 2 years ago I was experiencing insulin resistance and my HbA1c reading was 5.7. Soon after that I took up intermittent fasting and I got results, such as weight loss, not needing to take a nap in the afternoon or getting hypoglycemic. My last HbA1c, 2 months ago, was 5.2 but my urination frequent has been 2 to 3 times beginning 2 months bag. Previously I slept through the night only needing to pee in the morning. 0n top of doing 18/6 for int fasting, I also do 24h fast once a week. Could you lead me know what is the possible problem? By the way, I have seen cut sugar from my diet and cut down on process carbs. Thank you in advance.

I am so happy to see this. I'm a 63 yr old woman and this has been happening since I was in my mid 50's. My record is 12 times one night. My average is 5-7. A good night is only 2-3. I was diagnosed with Metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance and took Metformin. I lost quite a bit of weight. After a yr, I stopped the Metformin and still did well. I was eating 12-6 only aside from 2 cups of coffee upon waking. Now I have slid back into a 12-8 pattern and often have gluten-free cereal with a banana as an evening snack. I'm going back to my original plan. I never connected it with Nocturia.

I did well. I lost weight and no longer needed the metformin. I am back to monitoring my food though in terms of sugars in snacks such as bread and pastries are a big issue for me. I never ate bread really. I'm not a sandwich person. I spent time abroad and fell in love with the European fresh bread available everywhere. Makes sense. I got on a self-created diet based on a lot of research - including information from Dr. Berg. One of the "rules" of this diet was to eat no later than 6PM. Also, that last meal was non-carb, mostly raw leafy greens (salad) and a protein (how much depended on my physical condition and if I worked out that day). I suffered from nocturia for a long time - often 5-6 times a night. Once I got on this diet that stopped. I thought it was from a combination of working out and that I also set daily goals that I could reach so felt more at ease, not worrying about the things I still had to do in the coming days and weeks. That stuff helped me get to sleep, for sure, but I guess fixing the nocturia was more about my diet.

Dr Berg! It works! I’m a 65 year old female living in the UK, and I usually get up at least twice in the night to pee, sometimes three times which is most annoying. I sceptically, (should have known better) tried your suggestion and even though I woke at 3.30am I didn’t feel the need to pee and went back to sleep. In fact, I didn’t need to pee again until 12.50am the following day! Now that was a welcome surprise! I wasn’t able to stop drinking totally after 6.30pm, but only had sips of water when there was an absolute need. I am so pleased with this result and will continue to use your suggestion as it has changed my life. Thank you so much you are brilliant! I love all your videos.
