As an asain who studied Chinese, I have mixed feelings lol. I belive it's not that hard to provide the VAs the actual pronunciation. I have to play in CN dub to not feel weird 😵‍💫

@@Crysthos yea that’s understandable, but even if they couldn’t get the pronunciations right, they could’ve at least collectively landed on one pronunciation for the names. Chixia got done especially dirty with her own VA pronouncing it two or three different ways 😂

They are not FORCED. Its just bad management. They listen to their words and then change nothing. WW should took 3 months of polishing before release.

@@melmelon3393probably because they weren’t. Fun fact, the whole va cast are british and have fairly strong accents, which they were made to cover up for the game, but you can hear it come through in a lot of characters (like Encore and the ‘civilians’ you meet)

@@frgal1336 When I started playing Wuwa with the English voices, I actually laughed out loud and went "Why do they sound like they're trying to do a really bad New York or Boston accent sometimes?!" Then I started hearing British pronunciation on some things and was even more confused. Did some reading and found out that nearly, if not all, of the English voice cast was British and they were told to do an American accent, and they were almost all given only one take, so they couldn't go back and redo anything. Hopefully they improve things, but I switch between JP because it sounds better, and English because it's funny to listen to.

Well, Yangyang's EN VA is Rebecca Yeo, she is Chinese descend, that's why she can pronounce it correctly

Her VA is Chinese Canadian or something, which explains how she can pronounce it well.

The examples in these videos aren't *that* accurate, she slowed down the "xia" part when it's supposed to me "sia" and not "si-ya"

thank you for tolerating and understanding the difference between chinese and english lmao. on another note, i find non-native english speakers speaking "broken" english to be acceptable to an extent, and i believe it would also be the case with other languages too.

​@@kicks4439 Pronouncing names with an accent is perfectly fine, however, imo, there's a difference between speaking it with an accent and spewing out the wrong syllables altogether. "Jinzhou" in an English accent would sound something like "jeen-joe," and that's fine However if they start saying it like "jinn-zoo," for example, I'd consider that blatant mispronunciation I just want it to sound like they're trying, you know?

Honestly the most annoying part is that there's no consistency. Multiple characters pronounce the same name differently, that makes it jarring.

You'd be better off using CN dub instead, since the pronunciation EN dub is doing is literally reading off the pinyin or romanisation of the character's names. Intonation and 'word-biting' (basically pronunciation) is usually lost by EN VAs

​@@srfl02honestly, as someone who doesn't speak any dialect of Chinese it would be kinda hard to pull off. English isn't my first language but at least I'm familiar with the sound. And with Chinese, I was watching Heaven Official's Blessing with susbtitles once and catching the names judging by the transliteration (Cyrillic version) was a challenge I gave myself. Could barely hear 10% in the first few episodes 😅

@@atriyakoller136 well the context here is about pronouncing the names, so catching for it while pairing with the fact that the name would appear in the subs should help with this. I do get the part about not catching meanings from shows though, honestly pretty tough considering slang and whatnot

The 'zhu' in Baizhu seems to be another pronunciation of 术， or technique, while Baizhi's 'zhi' on very brief googling refers to the medicinal fungus Lingzhi. There are plenty of examples where 1 letter changes a whole meaning to a word in English anyway (off the top of my head, borne and bone), what more that these are romanised from Mandarin.

@@srfl02 I get where you're going with this, but I also can't expect the average english speaking gacha player to know this, or any chinese words for that matter. It absolutely doesn't help that both characters are healers too. You telling me the words for fungus and technique is new information to me... 1 letter meaning changes in english doesn't make matters better, it just means english has the same problem that makes it just as bad. And only gets worse if you get into the word "bow", but excuse me I'm getting off track. Dare I say, the one letter meaning changes wouldn't be as bad maybe, if pronounciation rules were more intuitive.

Yeah, they do that in Genshin too. Take a look at Keqing's name in JP vs CN/Global hahaha, it's Kokusei. Qiqi is changed to Nana etc.
