First thing that came up in my mind when I was reading this chapter in my history lesson was 'how can Indian soldiers shoot their own people?' If I were in their place I would have shot the official even if it led to my death, you know juvenile thinking but years later I learned that these soldiers were Afghan and Gurkha. British Raj were good at their divide and rule policy where they exploited past tensions between Afghans and Sikhs or Hindus and Muslims and what not. They say history is always written by "winners" but perhaps incidents like these are too sinful from them to bury.

I think the difference between this situation and the other as brutal movies that you mentioned are that this was something done a civilian population. While extremely terrible, they were soldiers in a war. By any definition, this was a crim against humanity, not a war crime. And there were other massacres and brutal man made famines in many places caused them. Starvation is slow and extremely painful and brutal way to die. And if you live the trauma lasts generations. That's why when western media keeps calling out colonized places for the actions, most places in the world are like "you need to look in mirror at your own actions." My grandparents were alive when this was taking place but many people are like people now are not responsible. But remember that Queen Elizabeth was Head of the English Empire during the Mau Mau Massacre and she never said anything against it. It was really brutal. If you enjoy the priviledges as Head of State then you have to account for the things that are done in your name. Why more people weren't helping at first is because there was a curfew and any gathering of more than 2 people was illegal and you could be shot.
