NO RUBBING with 285s on my Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro

One thing I didn’t mention in the video was the exact wheel specs. These are 17x8.5 Rays TE-37xt M-spec wheels with -20 offset. I thought for sure these would rub… but they don’t!

Tires are BFGoodrich KO2s
Size: 285/70r17
I couldn’t be happier with this setup… love how it turned out! What are your thoughts?

Love your 5th gen look. My 5th gen was rubbing in reverse up and down the driveway in full lock on the front bumper. I had to trim about an inch from the front bumper and relocate the fender liner. I still have rubbing on the body mounts (I know because they are shiny black all the time, haha). I run on my 5th gen 17x8 with 0 offset Method MR305 NV Double Blacks with 285 /70 /17 ko2's.

A slight rub here and there is worth it imo haha I thought my TE37s having a -20 offset would only increase the chances of rubbing but it looks as though it helped hah

She sittin nice. I love seeing legit wheels on 4Runners lol. Rays and advans and volks just look so good. I’ve got some rays team Daytona m8’s on my 22 orp and I almost Went with te’s but just couldn’t find the right deal for me. I also know I get so tired of seeing the same 3 wheels on everyone’s copy cat build (trd wheels, Moto metal, and all the ones they sell at discount tire lol )

You don't have wheel spacers right, it is just the negative offset rims that flares the wheels like that ? Because I like that stance. I like the wheels to flare out just a little bit like yours.

crazy. i have bfg ko2 c rated on sema trd pro rims on my 23 trd orp kdss. stock suspension, i still have the front mud flaps on and it just barely grazes the flaps full lock on a bump. it will definitely rub going offroad but i was surprised i didnt need to remove the flaps to drive in the city. i plan on adding a 1in spacer and slimmer front flaps so it should clear no problem. hopefully an alignment wont cause it to rub

@@tprountzos i added a 1.5 inch spacer which gave me about a 2.5in lift at the front. no rubbing and i still have my stock mudflaps. no bmc

So was the surprise that they didn’t rub because they are on these rims? I ask because I know you’ve had the Westcott lift on several 4Runners with these tires and I don’t remember there being an issue then. Those were all stock TRD wheels if I remember (same setup on mine which I am installing this on). Looks awesome on those rims!

Yep! The wheels are a little wider than TRD wheels and have a -20 offset.

Articulation on dips and bumps could cause a rub. Pretty tight fit.

At the time of the video, were you runner stock UCAs? Also, you stated you had to trim of front bumper. Any body mount chop...or just removed front mud flaps? Your offset is -20. If you added a 20mm spacer (making overall offset -40mm), would you think it would rub?

Stock UCAs I think the spacers would cause it to rub.

What he does not mention is that the front is trimmed. You can see that the front bumper cover has been trimmed just a bit in front of the front wheel. Not a huge deal for some, but there are others that would NOT want to do that to the plastic bodywork. He may not have trimmed it, but it is most certainly trimmed.

@@numbr17 had this same setup on 3 different TRD Pro 4Runners. None were trimmed, just stock pros. They don’t “trim” anything at the port.

Question if I have regular trd pro wheels will I rub? I notice your line green one did , so if I get westcott lift and know 285/70/17 will I rub?

It’ll have a slight rub at full lock. The -20 offset allowed these to clear. Only “need” a -10 offset.

@@UntamedMotors The higher the negative number in the offset, the WORSE the rubbing will be. -10 will rub less than -20. Zero offset will rub less than -10.

So my fifth gen is sitting on bilstein 5100’s and two inch spacers in the rear. It’s not much but it definitely sits higher than stock. Would 285’s on my TRD wheels fit ?

The lift actually makes it worse. Since your front suspension is drooped around 2” (I’m assuming 2” based off your rear spacer), it’s pulling the wheels closer to the body. Assuming you haven’t gone above a 2” lift, it’s pretty moderate and you should be able to fit them with very minimal trimming. You will have to do more than he did though :/

You can tell in this video that it is lifted at least 2 inches in front. Probably 3 inches. He posted the offset of the wheels in the gray description box. It is a -20 offset.

For mall crawling? You add weight and turning radius and this truck will 100% rub going over a pebble. For offroad you get a massive increase in footprint and about 1/2 clearance compared to stock.

@@Theone0611 it depends on the tire. Tread width is not represented by 265/285, that's the outside to inside of the sidewall. For example, a 265 geolandar is 8.0 inch tread, a 275 is 8.1 inch tread, a 285 is 8.8 inch tread. So there's more to it than the 265 size. Also, it's got a larger radius, which means longer footprint as well.

I’ve got a 2020 SR5 Premium with no lift. Have the 17- inch TRD wheels with 265 AT tires. Wondering if I could go to 285’s without a lift. This gives me hope!

@@UntamedMotors I disagree. Offset of the TRD Pro wheels provides full clearance for 285/70R17's except for some minor trimming of the front bumper and pushing the wheel well liners forward.

You can NOT do 285mm wide tires on a 4Runner without rubbing during suspension articulation at lock. If you ever want to do actual off-roading, then go with 275 wide. It's only a centimeter difference.

@@numbr17 there are videos online where they have the springs removed and articulate the wheels all the way up without rubbing, at full lock. I think that with proper alignment and offset it's possible. In any event, actual measurements of 275's and 285's vary between manufacturers and models. I recall that a Falken Wildpeak 275 is just a hair smaller than a KO2 285.
