8/4/2022 - There are numerous benefits to densely planting tropical fruit trees in California's Central Valley. My front yard alone, has approximately 31 different tropical fruit trees planted in the ground.

Welcome back from Hawai'i! Beautiful footage from there! It's so beautiful and there's so many kinds of tropical plants, especially fruits! I've been twice and still didn't get to try all the fruits I wanted. It's so cool that you grow so many here in the Central Valley. Your garden is amazing and inspiring. Really enjoyed this one--really nicely stated on why you plant the way you do. I've binged on Gary Matsuoka videos recently; thanks for the suggestion! Curious; when you planted your trees, did you use anything with woody material in it? I certainly did not knowing any better. He's right--almost all bagged soils these days are composed in part with ground up trees so its hard to avoid. BTW--the trees are loving the frequent watering and I've actually decreased consumption overall. Huge thanks for that too! So much of what we are told from the "experts" isn't always right
@TropicalCentralValley

Prior to finding Gary’s videos, I originally incorporate compost and “potting” soil into my mixture when planting. I now do not use any wood products when planting. My go to concoction currently has been a mixture of peat moss, sand and other inorganic products (Azomite, perlit, etc.). I’m not really sure where people originally got the deep watering idea from, but I’m sure it had its place.

Great video, love the intro. Quick question, I'm starting to plant guava trees and the labels state that they need 10-15 ft of spacing from other trees, I was wondering if that's really necessary since I want to get more guava trees but I don't have a whole lot of space left? Thank you!
@TropicalCentralValley

Totally not necessary. Some of my guava fruit trees are within a few feet apart from each other. They do well close together.

I guess you don't have a flat roof, but rather a slanted one. You can't keep containers on them, but flat roofs are a blessing in disguise. You may try container farming, btw

Hello. I noticed that your star fruit tree is fruiting. I have mine grown from seed. One is in the ground and it's 3 yrs old. I have another one in a container that is skinny and reaching the roof gutter. That one is 2 yrs old. Since both are grown from seeds do you know approximately when it will produce fruit? Or just go buy a grafted or air-layered one for 100% guaranteed fruit production?
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 2 жыл бұрын
Starfruits produce fruits from a fairly young age, typically between 2-3 years if grown from seeds. The three shown in the video were grafted varieties, which explains why they fruit and flower. In your car, I suspect it may fruit next year.

I love the looks and is amazing how much you have packed into that small space and seems like you are getting some production, the only thing I would have done differently would be more diversity, you have multiple and same variety of starfruit, guava, mangoes which you could have a different fruit or same fruit but different variety (seasons/flavors).
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. One of my future projects is to graft various other varieties onto my established fruit trees. The trees shown are relatively established and have been in the ground for many years. In my opinion, these varieties do quite well in the ground in our climate. That being the case, they are prime candidates to serve as the rootstocks for other varieties. Many of my Manila mango trees will be grafted with the scions of other varieties, same with the guava, wax jambu, etc.

@@TropicalCentralValley question for you. When thinking of rootstock should timing of fruiting (early, mid, late varieties) matter or mainly we should be considering root stock variety vigor/adaptability/desease resistance for our specific area?

Hello! Really been enjoying the videos as a newer viewer. For Mangoes, what would you recommend for spacing? I would like to get the trees to 8-10 ft tall anyway eventually. We are in Phoenix, AZ, so generally very hot and dry summers as well as some low 30 degree weather in winter although not much. Thanks!
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. To answer your question, your climate is actually way better than mine when it comes to the growing of various tropical fruit trees, including mango trees. Spacing hasn’t been an issue for any of my in-ground mango trees. My Manila mango trees are within 2 feet from other fruit trees and both mango trees are reaching 10-12 feet.

I have another question to ask you if you don't mind. I see that you have plenty of fruits on your jujube tree. Do you have any issues of your fruits shivering up and drying up on the tree then falling off? I have the Lang and Li varieties. Last year the Li was a heavy producer but this year something is off. Half of the fruits have dried up and fallen off. This one is in a 20 gallon container. I watered it daily. The Lang is in the ground, it also has similar issues but not as drastic as the Li. I know the hot temps in the high 90's and long days of over 100's isn't helping. It is shaded by the massive passion fruit vines on the fence. Do you know what's wrong with it? Sad losing my fruits.
@TropicalCentralValley
@TropicalCentralValley 2 жыл бұрын
I can’t say any of my jujube trees have had their fruits shriveled up like that, including my Lang variety. If this is the first year it is fruiting heavily, this may be completely normal as the tree will know how many fruits it can support. I would continue watering it as well as increasing your phosphorus and potassium.

@@TropicalCentralValley Thank you I will do that 🙏. I've been at my property for 6 yrs now and have accumulated over 15 plus fruits trees. Half are tropical. It's awesome that I ran into your channel and found that we both live in the central valley. I'm still learning on tending to the tropical fruit trees and you are my guru to the central valley of growing tropical fruit trees. My husband thinks I'm crazy for continuously collecting fruit trees when I have more than enough in my backyard. Well us passionate gardener's are collecters. The word enough is hard to swallow, lol.

Although the location of the tropical fruit tree is important, I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on it. Instead, try to see if you can provide it with some protection from the climate. For instance, erecting a large shade cloth over the tree to ensure it gets morning sun and afternoon shade.
