The rod material you found is disturbing, but the metal on the oil drain plug is worse in my opinion. Bearing material is typically made of bronze, aluminum, and copper type materials and won't stick to a magnet. Steel and iron will, and that's what rods and cranks are made out of.
@danielcgomez
@danielcgomez 7 жыл бұрын
yea, that's crank journal 'batter' right there. And a Main Bearing 'knock' is a strange noise to hear well on a louder car(noisy exhaust, etc.)
@dirtybeatzuk3292
@dirtybeatzuk3292 7 жыл бұрын
They do stick to magnets, i remove all broken bearings from engines on a daily basis by using a magnet, it would be very hard to remove material from the crank or rods, only by constant grinding motion, and then there would not be any material only microscopic dust. A broken bearing causes the crank journal to be reshaped to the broken bearing, a simple grind with over-sized shells can fix any crank as long as its tolerances are ok.

Copper does react to a very strong magnetic field to create energy (Shake light). But it isn't actually "magnetic". So I've read...

The F series motors are unreasonably expensive compared to the K series motors. Unfortunately, it seems like at high mileages, the F series is prone to losing compression and all sorts of garbage. How many miles do you have your car? When you guys got it, it looked pretty shoddy. Is it a clean title?

Just a suggestion for cutting open filters. If you use a cut off wheel or reciprocating saw, you may add metal to the filter that wasn't there beforehand. On the other hand, without the filter cutting tool it can bring out the rage. Nice catch on the bearing. Can't wait to see what the issue is.

As always love your content guys. As a fellow s2k owner who also needs a rebuild, my heart goes out to y'all. My vote is fresh bearings. How long do you want this motor to last anyway? This may be crazy speak, but once a motor is modded or seeing consistent track time, my mileage expectations are seriously shortened. Compared to a another block, bearings are cheap. The time component and labor isn't so fun, but you can also build your clearances the way you want. A little on the looser side since you know the engine is going to be run hot for longer periods. Looking forward to what y'all do.

I have a 2006 Honda odyssey it gives me the code P2649 Rocker arm oil control solenoid VTEC solenoid valve circuit high voltage. Do I just change the part or worry about high-voltage? I also have other codes P2770, P0970, P0980, P0966, P0974. There all giving me high input, high circuit or low circuits. Should I just change the parts or is this a different issue? The car wouldn’t start I thought it was a battery and alternator issue. I replaced both of them. The car ran for a few miles and it shut off on me I couldn’t start it without a jump. Also I need to mention before it shut off on me every time I stopped and try to accelerate it hardly did.

I'd say take everything apart and send the block and head out to be resurfaced guessing somewhat below 2k if there is one near you... I don't see the findings of the bearings realated to you guys, obv. because none of the bottom end was taken apart until now, but my guess is that oil clearances were a tad too tight on what could be the main or rod bearings (because not sure if you guys actually took out and inspected all the bearings by the crank if that's what the issue is, which I doubt. Have you guys looked at the timing chain tensioner and inspected that and the chain itself?

You have to look into the inner part of the pleats of the filter to find what it is catching. Easiest thing to do is just pull the filter material out of the cage. Also as mentioned by others, you need to pull the crank and polish the journals.

if I remember correctly, on your tune you set the parameter for your coolant temp pretty low. once the car hits operating temp (which is probably much higher since you're tracking it), the car is not engaging vtec due to it thinking that the car is too hot. just my 2 cents. not saying that there isn't something wrong with the motor either but if you still have issues in the future.

@boostben

I was helping a Targa NFLD team that had a similar problem with a B18c. They had RTV all throughout the oil pickup screen and when the oil was hot the pressure was too low to engage VTEC. I'm not sure if the AEM uses the VTEC oil pressure switch or not but that could also be a source of problems (probably doesn't use it though). With that amount of metal in the pan it's most certainly a rod bearing. Kinda sucks but, the ASS2000 was questionable at best when you bought it!
@speedacademy
@speedacademy 7 жыл бұрын
pickup screen was clean, the rtv in our pan was just from the block when we removed the pan. it was a junkyard motor, so who knows how it was treated before we adopted it :D

K swaps are incredibly expensive on this platform. Honestly price wise you can go stroker for the same as a used engine. I'd look at cnc (central North Carolina) speed shops stroker kit. It's a crank and rods uses the Oem pistons bumps up compression and it's really affordable. Assuming they still offer it I haven't looked in a couple years. You already have all the supporting mods to do it. Also i know you have the canton pan not sure what your datalogs show if you record oil pressure but maybe accusump time.

Speed Academy the thing that killed the car is the oil you are using. That viscosity doesn't handle heat very well on the track. for normal driving is perfect but for track days it doesn't work as good. In the track go for a higher viscosity ( 15 w 40 or 20 w50). these handle better the heat.

This has all the classic symptoms of a failed crankshaft thrust bearing. Easy to diagnose, confirm or eliminate, just check the crank end-play clearance. With that amount of metal in the oil, the failed bearing should be easy to detect by simply rotating the crank back and forth in a short rocking motion by hand and detecting the ones with excess clearance by feel. All of that RTV is not good in the oil stream either, we have almost completely banned the use RTV silicone in our shop and use either anaerobic gasket maker/sealer or Hylomar sparingly as a replacement. Any excess anaerobic material will dissolve in the oil and since it is a large enough particle the oil filter captures it on the first circulation pass. The trick is to not have excess sealer that can get in the oil stream.
