You have just saved me with your video! I have ordered this model but due to vacations period in Greece instead of reaching me within 3 days it has already a delay of 15! But I had no idea about this change! Now I will cancel that order and will get something else. Thanks for uploading this. You have saved me from lots of frustration!

Carey, I just did a new build using the Mugen 5 Revision B on a 12600k. It does a fantastic job. I did have to order a 1700 backplate. But the mounting is still as slick as ever. BTW, I learned about the Mugen 5 from you and have used it on my last 2 builds. I love it. Quiet and cools amazing.

I understand your frustration Carey. I recently built a computer for a client utilising a Be Quiet BK003. It had an amalgamation of mounting stand offs that was incredibly labour intensive and then tow of the half circle standoffs were missing. I have looked and looked for a replacement mounting kit to no avail.

Take out part well holding bag b, insert part c into part well balancing the motherboard on your face. Affix screw set q to flange x. Apply then deapply thermal paste, well also applying it. Remember when fans came with slidable fan mounts where you would just click it into place, it would then lock, put on mother board done..

Having built with both mounting brackets and using the new brackets for a while now I can tell you it’s not that much harder in fact once you learn it once I haven’t forgotten it since. Outside for old inside for new black for old blue for new it’s that easy not to mention the boards outside the case so it’s not like it’s a tight space to work in probably added about 1-3 minutes extra time into my build time if your employees are losing parts or can’t remember that then it’s more of a training issue I build about 1-2 builds a week and nh d15s’s go in like 60% of them I can see where one can be confused if using many types of coolers but what you were explaining was that this was your main stay cooler so ya I’d just try a couple more times and you’ll have it down pat, a lot of computer builds have little tricks you can do to make things painless as possible and training and learning is really the main thing

I am NOT going to manually assemble a bracket for the 43 systems I have here to build. I am also not going to spend $80 to add more labor and lost productivity to my day. Forcing everyone to assemble the bracket is insane. I have just purchased two cases of Scythe Mugen 5 black edition coolers. Brackets are pre-assembled. Cooler is larger and cools better. installation happens in minutes and its impossible to install wrong. What Noctua did here is dilute the value of their brand no different than Rolex cutting costs and making their watches cheaper, but still charging the same price. This is NOT OK. I am not aware of any air cooler of the same size that costs as much as this one. This is the most expensive cooler of this size and, when the install was easy, worth every penny. Now, if you gave me one for free, I'd toss it in the trash. Even if I did use it, I am still tossing 2/3s of the installation materials into the landfill. This is a big middle finger to the environment and the intelligence of their customers.

A while back ago I got one because everyone said they were so easy to install. it was not as easy as to install in fact required so much force compared to other coolers I've installed so much that the cooler slipped out and I had to repaste it. It took me and my brother in law to both install it and he has built a lot of computers. He said "it should not have been that hard" maybe its because I used it for an intel chip in a time when everyone seemed to be installing amd chips. However next time I will either go back to the 212 or just try something else.

I wouldn’t worry z690 has some v serious problems developing on ddr5 boards . Maybe Noctua have an inkling and part reason why this backplate design has been adopted !! Why AMD is leaving ddr5 till middle end next year . You get amd cpu then you don’t have this problem !!!! I’m going amd next . Zen 4 will be LGA too . I feel intel are in real trouble mostly because there shrinking of node is way too slow therefore needing more power on a 10nm node which would not be such an issue on a smaller process.. did shrinkage equals success get that wrong and failure will follow and this could be starting

Hi I’ve used Noctua for a very long time have most all models. Like all coolers there’s familiarity with the mounting system that improve the installation. I repair Noctua coolers . This backplate is a temporary solution for a platform developing serious problems which will surface over coming months well they already have z690 on ddr5 has some nasty problems which are arising . Alright all new platforms have problems but these are very very serious ones . I feel amd will prove far more successful on ddr5 and time will prove this .

What should have happened is keep what it was. Then if you get a 1700 they'd have a separate sku with a conversion back plate that would make it compatible. Yes it costs more but you decided to go 12th gen before there was a need.

I suppose you have a point from the perspective of a system builder. The Noctua SecuFirm mounting at least in the past was billed as another feature for its simplicity and relative ease of installation. I guess Noctua now thinks their customers don't regard SecuFirm as a feature of the coolers.

Yes for the cost they should include separate backplates. I was disappointed to see new the intel mounting setup when I just received my Noctua u12a Chromax. For $120 they shouldn't cheap out and use these crappy plastic lock rings. I have one of the old mounts that I will probably use instead since I don't need LGA1700.

I agree with you for keeping parts for specific assembly types. But however looking at it from their perspective, it would be sometimes cost effective to make something a universal fit. Throwing in a few adaptive parts is cheaper than a new design, new production line, new packaging etc. A major majority of companies do this method to cut production costs. There are always two sides to a coin, sometimes having a universal part is good and sometimes not. The reason for higher cost is reflected because it is universal with Xtra parts. For my perspective it's nice to have things pre-assembled but, that would kinda take the joy out of it for me. It really doesn't bother me too much to take a little bit of Xtra effort because I know that when I am done I can take pride that I successfully created something. Not saying you are wrong or be disrespectful or upset you, I'm just giving you a different perspective and opinion. Can it be annoying? Absolutely yes. Sometimes change is good and sometimes not so good. Sometimes we can change things, sometimes we can't. Things, companies, people come and go. There is always constant change and adaptability. Even though you may not see it you yourself have changed and adapted through the years. You keep up with the times. Thank you for your videos and all that you do!

I agree with 30+ years of experience Mr. Carey’s advice. It’s Noctua best interest to listen to their customers and especially people like Mr. Holzman on what they are trying to convey. What usually works shouldn’t be fixed. Leave it alone. If you’re going to create a kit for the 1700, in my opinion a cooler specific for that would have just been the simplest route. No confusion, less complications all around which is worth any added cost. It’s either this or it’s not. No headaches. No worries. No waste of one’s precious time having to think things through. 🤔 Why breakup a good marriage lol 😂

I would like to buy new low end Ryzen 3 for some build, but since the fab are running at full capacity, AMD use their parts in more profitable product with low volume rather than less profitable in the same low volume. I can't blame them, I would do the same thing.. But I would really like a 5200g..

What i don't get is that they could have just done a dedicated sku at a higher price which seems to be how everything else works for 12th gen. Then they make extra profit and don't compromise existing products. In short not a very sensible decision from Noctua.

Or they could offer a free bracket to the socket 1700 users. Given that there are literally millions of AM4 and 115x/1200 and 20xx sockets already in the channel, and yet only a few thousand socket 1700, why make the masses have to endure the extra labor and increase the odds of a faulty installation to accommodate an extreme minority?

Hi Carey, what is worse is that if you buy the stand alone LGA1700 mounting bracket, the bracket is good ol' Noctua quality. Assembled like we are used to. So, when I got my Chromax with LGA1700 compatibility I was as disappointed as you were. Quite frustrated as well. Considering Noctua quality, I was expecting both Intel backplates, not the new pain in the butt one.

This is exactly why I disagree with multiple socket installation versions of any cooler, Not only is it more parts to contend with but it some times is way more confusing especially when the directions are not that clear, Some times the parts are so close in size that it is hard to determine witch one is witch. I have personally had one hyper 212 that caused me to bend socket pins in several motherboards until I threw it in the trash.

Dark rock pro 4 is a much better value in that price range, easy to install and looks far better. Noctua has always been overpriced hype like 80 series Nvidia cards (Dollar to performance gains). Dark Rock pro 4 has beat out Noctua time and again in this matchup of Stupid large Air coolers and DR4pro can even holds it own with High overclocking. For air coolers I've used Bequiet's for years now and never had an issue or a call due to failure. You could cheap out with a Muegen or an Arctic but for customers I prefer a little more wiggle room with price to performance and quality, though the Scythe series downfire coolers are a great design and cools multiple points better than a tower cooler, great for more closed off cases if customers need those styles.
