Tech Chap Reviews the Nokia X20 Review! Featuring a big 6.67" screen, 5G, Stock Android 11 & 64MP Quad Camera for £300 - the X20 falls behind the competition with weak performance, and only a 60hz LCD screen. So is the Nokia X20 really worth buying?

I already made a pre-order for the nokia x20 in russia. I'm totally aware of my choice and here are my reasons: 1-Design 2-Software updates (3 years) 3-Ziess camera 4-Cooling system 5-Gorilla Glass 5 6-Compostable case 7-I don't play games so the 480 snapdragon is not an issue for me. 8-I don't like software bugs, problems, advertising and the cameras of Poco, Oppo, Xiaomi etc. People should understand that the chinese market of smartphones is not reliable especially in terms of software support. IPS LCD is very comfortable for my eyes. By the way, Amoled/Oled screens are more likely to burn in and have more fading issues compared to IPS LCD. My only complain is that the 480 don't allow to record a 4k video, but if the x20 can record a smooth HD video without autofocus problems, it would be really cool.
@KLNarayanaReddy
@KLNarayanaReddy 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly same feeling brother.. SD 480 doesn't support 4K recording,that is only the problem.. Compare to Nokia X6 PPI also very less. X6( Nokia 6.1 Plus ) have 435 PPI X20 have 395 PPI..

I totally agree, with all but one point. I have a Huawai P20 Pro, and the 12MP camera can do 4K at 60Hz. it's the 480G chip that has the built in limitation, not so much the camera. I too am looking at the Nokia X20 real soon. be great if the back case could pop off to allow easy battery replacement, but that's maybe asking too much.

I don't understand why Apple can make a 1.000 $ Phone with a 60hz display but Nokia needs more than 60hz on a 300 $ Phone. Or the iPhone 11 still has LCD for 600 $ and Nokia is not allowed to do use LCD?

True. While Android is free to use, maintaining and upgrading it isn't. Personally, I would use a Nokia smartphone if I ever decide to start trading on my countrys stock exchange because of the security updates and OS upgrades Nokia provides. Google and Nokia are enough for me when it comes to collecting personal information and usage data. On other smartphones, the extra apps, privacy policy (or policies), and other terms of use contracts are an additional compromise to data safety and integrity, and personal privacy. Many people don't realize this when it comes to dealing with financial matters on an Android phone. This is made worse when they leave the phone at its default settings.

@DANIEL CHUKWUKERE No problem as far as I'm concerned. Just as I do not entertain a Chinese branded car, likewise I stick with a European branded phone ! This so called 'value for money' propersition never ends in that the Chinese brands of almost anything almost always seems 'better' ?!? No exception even when it comes to phones as such. So as I get better peace of mind overall speaking from a Nokia device.... irregardless whatever Chinese shit brands around (which many of them use Nokia patents under license !) I might as well settle for the 'original brand' of almost anything I touch, so I still prefer a Nokia device at end of day ! BTW, of the various phones I use, the most updated is my Nokia 9 & 7+ (Mar 2021 security) even my Nokia 8 is Oct 2020..far more updated than my 4K Sony Xperia XZ Premium still stuck with July 2020 update same as my Huawei P20 Pro eventhough that more expensive phone than my 7+ ! !

@@neerand I discovered this when I had to switch from my iPhone SE last year and went with the Pixel 4a. Started getting eye strains and then eventually headaches and even almost like mini seizures. And Im the guy who is 8-10 hrs in front of screens every day and nothing of this sort happens. By the time I realized and looked up the issue of PWM, I was out of return period so I had to sell my 4a. Really loved the device otherwise. Now about a week ago I bought Pixel 5, reading from PWM sensitive users that its easier on their eyes. On the first day of using it my eyes started burning, I started getting headaches in minutes. Returned it the very next day. Im not touching an OLED display anymore. Its a shame too coz the display and colors are excellent with the OLED, I can see colors that I never saw on my other LCD screens. Lets hope the tech evolves and they can give us the same experience without the horrible flicker. I wish more influencers with bigger audiences talked about this issue tho.
@neerand

@@Alduizard its good that we can perceive it in the form of headache. Imagine your brain automatically dilate and contract your pupil many times a second and you don’t even know it. Even though some people cannot perceive it doesn’t mean it won’t have any long term damage to our vision. Even me, I will never touch an OLED phone again. OLED will ultimately be followed by Mini-LED display. OLED is just a transitional tech and it is associated with flaws such as PWM and burn in. Until then, people like us will have to choose the remaining LCD IPS phone on the market.

I bought the X20 yesterday after spending hours reason reviews and specs. Tbh, I've never spent so long deciding on a phone over the past few decades. However, so much consideration and what seems like impressive hardware specs on rivals. However, this phone is great. I'm not sure better Sienna are requested. PLUS (a big plus) I read usercomment on a forum which stuck with me whilst making my decision. Nokia gives 3 year warranty and years of updates ( future proof) and the commenter highlighted the fact that updates on other phones have slowed up the hardware on rivals phones. The analogy used was so you want the rush of having a " high speced paperweight or a usable phone ". They have a point. The updates are worthy and in real life, this phone is great.

Picked up this phone at the end of June '21. I've had a good 9 months use out of it. Great build quality, great battery life, solid OS not had issues. Cameras are great although not spectacular (I had a Pixel 3 XL before this!). Saying that it does have full manual controls on the camera and also plenty of options to shoot more creatively. I particularly like the duo video camera where you can have two camera feeds into one screen. Works well and given me some pictures that the Pixel would never have! :) The screen is a good size for working with, perfect aspect ratio for consuming video (16:9). Sound although mono crisp and loud enough. Love the clean fast unbloated OS. Had an OS update shortly after Android 12 was released and just had a the monthly security patch so things are kept upto date. Its got a nice hefty solid feel to it which I like and appreciated the screen protector and case supplied with it. Nokia also planted 20 trees on behalf of me when I bought this. One of the aspects that appealed to me is that Nokia are at least trying to make sustainable phones with 3 years warranty and updates so yes maybe more expensive vs other on a simple paper spec sheet comparison but in use its great! Call quality great and 5G useful when out and about - its getting more popular these days so handy to have on board. Only slight downside is can lack a bit of smoothness when flicking between apps etc. Not hugely noticeable when using the phone on a daily basis but if you are coming from a flagship device to this then you will notice a little. Not a huge problem and given the price differential acceptable! Great phone and a solid well performing dependable work and play tool. No problems here with it! :) The Nokia ringtone makes me smile every time it rings :D

Thx 4 the review. I've bought the x20 (just waiting for it to arrive). Main point for me is indeed the Android One software (Too bad it is not really taking off.... Kudos to Nokia/HMD for sticking to it). And the 3yrs of updates. 5G is nice but for me personally not that important. The other specs may be a bit less compared to what others deliver, but I expect them to be good enough. I am updating from the Xiaomi Mi A1 (their first Android One and imo a very nice and well-specced device at that time) which is stuck at Android 9, so A11 to A14 without bloatware on my next phone sounds good! While I understand the issue, Snapdragon 480 is quite a depart from previous 400 series, because it has some fast processors in the array (2x Cortex-A76), contrary to previous designs that had only "little" cores. So its a 700-series class chipset despite the name. Your own comparison puts it surprisingly close to its bigger brothers. So thank you for it: vast majority of reviewers infers performance from naming alone.

Hi Chap, IPS LCD is boon for people suffering from PWM used in OLED screens. So, please do not push the companies to give OLED screen for every mid range phone. And if you have time, please do a video about PWM and its health effects on some people just so that people are aware about it. I had to deal with nauseas and headaches for around 6 months because of using OLED smartphone. Now that I am back to LCD iPhone, things are back to normal.

I remember that 7 Plus phone, I used to liking it because of its cool copper accented design but that's about it, then the lineup start went underwhelming. And as a whole, I think the new Nokia (under HMD) has been pretty unremarkable. I'm really not sure what they're doing exactly. Their recent products have uninspiring design and the spec (I know it's not everything) but really bad value for the price (Samsung offers better specced phones sometimes lol). I wish they got their shit back together and bring back the wonder from Nokia of old. I still remember the Lumia design from years ago. Still iconic and more cheerful compared to dullness of these new Nokia design. I used to be really excited with old Lumia even though it runs flawed Windows Phone OS because Lumia looks so cool, love the saturated colours on polycarbonate material especially cyan. It looks and feels high end. They already nailed on the software department like stock Android experience and long support, just need to refine in other parts as well. My 2 cents

@@obidean3964 I think that many fans of the Nokia brand are disappointed with the current products, but let's remember that HMD is a "Startup" that will complete 5 years of life in December 2021, and they are playing with what they have at the moment, all the difficulties and lack of money, HMD still lacks the strength to fight the giants (Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi)! We have to think like this: HMD is a small company wanting to fight to maintain the Nokia brand philosophy despite the market being so competitive at the moment, and the products launched so far are the best that it can offer. We have to give a time for a new company like HMD to gain solid foundations and later premium products will appear.

I've kept buying nokias because they have been lasting a lot. Still have the 7.1, which I still think it is beautiful and elegant, and after 2 years and a half I still only need to charge it every 2 days, like it was when I've bought it. Even if at the time there were also reviews just like this one, where the processor was criticized, I still bought it and I do not regret it. I'm just going to replace it because I've broken the screen before the pandemic (1 year and a half ago) after a really harsh fall. It shattered but almost unnoticeable. Only now some parts started getting out and exposing the inside, which told me that or I'd replace its screen or I'd replace it... So, I'm going for the X20. The main reason is that I don't want to be changing my phone frequently, I want it to last because it annoys me to configure a new phone, inserting the passwords, the phone book, etc. And I don't expect to have to replace this one in the next 3 years. But I do agree, for the price, they should have used at least a better processor, not the lowest of the line...

You mentioned the key to this phone (as well as the G series and their previous 2-9 series too)...the software. The Android One software is not the same as regular Android. It is a slimmed down and optimised software designed to work on specific hardware. That is part of Android One phones, they have a limited set of hardware option to choose from to be in the program. That said, when you lower the options and make the software for the hardware you will get a better experience. That is also why you see Nokia using the hardware they do (as well as others in the program) in their phones and their phones are very reliable and don't need the higher specs to have a great experience with them. That is also why they get the 2 and now 3 years of OS updates and security patches. Good video by the way.
