The best of angry Nick Nolte in The Thin Red Line.

I'm sorry but Nick Nolte should have won the Oscar for this scene alone. He's seething with rage while saying his line's. It's the best scene in the whole film.
@joemckim11835 жыл бұрын
Nolte totally nails this role. He's basically playing a career military officer who after years in the service is finally getting his chance to prove himself in war time. I assume that his character was made an officer in the early 1920's only a few years after WW1. Then he gets angry at his Captain seeming apprehensive in the field potentially stealing what should be his shining moment of battlefield glory.

@@captasparagus6908 I just looked up Eisenhower's promotion history and he didn't even make Brigadier General until September 1941. So a few months before Pearl Harbor he's a 1 star General and then in a year and half after that he's a 5 star General of the Army.

Epic role. I like his rant to Cusack the most. He is at the same time angry, pissed off, happy at Cusack's ridge breakthrough, proud of him as a soon, eager to keep the momentum going, unwilling to get the water up and stop the momentum, eager to justify his ambition to John, and then just straight up ordering water up lol. Absolute legend. Funny how like 90% of American actors were filming as US soldiers in 1997/98, whether on Saving private Ryan, or Thin Red line.

This was the finest performance of Nick Nolte's career IMHO and he deserved at least an Oscar nomination. He was totally convincing as an ambitious officer who had been passed over before but finally got his chance. There were a couple of forgettable roles by George Clooney and perhaps the worst casting ever of John Travolta as an Army general, but Nolte was exceptional in this movie.
@ked12243 жыл бұрын
years later here... but I get why you say that about Travolta's character, I just think it's purposeful. At this point, it is early in the war yet, so the Travolta character likely would have won his rank in peacetime, through politicking, and by pleasing the right people. As opposed to winning it through actual combat command. And so in this scene that character is relying on what had always worked for him, mainly manipulation. Even though these men are headed into the maw of death, he still can't inspire or empower, his nature is too self-serving.
@noeljones59943 жыл бұрын
Very correct ; it was brilliant casting. The army was full of these types early on.
@captasparagus69083 жыл бұрын
You can see how Travolta winds him up manipulating him with the carrot of becoming a general. People didn't like Travolta in this but I think he's perfect as a poltician who is a master manipulator. Always lots of those in wartime.
@protamine43 жыл бұрын
@@captasparagus6908 Good acting boils down to how believable one is in a role and how the actor or actress makes an audience feel. In this case Travolta had only one scene and I just didn't find him believable as a general. He was too recognizable and just seemed like a cameo by Travolta pretending to a general. Having him in just that one scene was distracting to me and I could not separate him from his character.
@captasparagus69083 жыл бұрын
@@protamine4 Yes I can see that. Hugo Weaving played Elrond in Lord of the Rings but the recognition factor killed it for me. I kept expecting Elrond to say "Mister Anderson!". I think the Travolta scene would be better if Travolta was an unknown actor and the Clooney/voiceover scene better if Clooney wasn't shown.

Actually he's an inexperienced colonel bucking for general and getting men killed to do it. I'm a Marine Corps veteran and this is what we call a fuck story. He totally disregarded the boots on ground advice of Captain Staros which caused the needless death of his men. I was infantry and there's a flanking opportunity then take it. Colonel Tall initially was giving rear guard orders to a frontline situation. He didn't court martial Staros because he knew he was right.

Nolte's character was more or less, the villain of the film. But the characters narration of the film reveals himself to be a sympathetic character. A career officer that had never seen war, yet unexpectedly thrown into one. With his compatibility with junior officers, particular to the the reserved, scholarly, and deeply sympathetic character of Captain Staros, you see him dramatically change from a doubtful and aging Lieutenant Colonel, to a hard ass West Pointer that knows what needs to be done. Casualties will be high, but if the assault isn't made, the casualties would be higher. It was Staros' dillema and ultimately, his mistake.

@@Urov. Some doesn't seem to understand that Cl. made huge mistakes here. He decided not to take count of Staros' remarks and he unnecessarily sacrificed men by leading a frontal attack instead of what Staros recommanded. If Staros didn't disobey, more men would have died. Then he tooks as his in an condescending way Staros' original plan to focus on a lateral manoeuvral. What a waste and a stupid commander..
@LloydWaldo3 жыл бұрын
@@bjbchessemperor875 this is correct. The CL was trying to exercise tactical control without visibility to the situation. Staros is aware of the tactical situation and knows that an assault from a covered position straight up the middle will put his men directly in the firing lines. It’s exactly what the Japanese want. Staros is younger and more agile than the colonel. He is trained to fire and maneuver, which means to keep his base of fire moving and lines spread out so the enemy cannot predict where an assault will come from, and concentrate fire in one place. The CL’s orders violate doctrine and staros is right to refuse the order. This is why the CL doesn’t court marshal him - an inquiry would reveal that staros was acting to protect his men from an incompetent leader.
