I was an extra in this movie and as a full time RVer I didn't know what to expect. It's a beautiful film of one woman's experience. We all choose to be houseless for different reasons. For me it's freedom from being a slave to a 30 year mortgage. Best decision I ever made

I've been a nomad for 8 yrs. I spent 60 some years living trying to please others. In so many ways I failed. We all carry grief and sadness with us. Out here judgment is left to a higher power. Peace can be found in the rays of the morning sunrise.

Not all of us nomads live with grief and sadness nor are living in a van because we feel we have to. In fact, a huge growing portion of van dwellers are intrepid adventurers who shun a conventional life and crave an existence close to nature, a life of immense feelings of freedom, and packed full of adventure and fitness. It’s been 17 years since I decided to really go after life and hit the road full time. I could not imagine living any other way.

This is the only video that gets close to what I understand the ending of the movie to be. All Fern's life she was defined by others. After Bo dies she has to deal with her grief and in so doing define what she wants for her own life and that does not mean living with her sister or David. I did not find this movie depressing. It was sad at times and so is life. But there is healing and moving forward with one's life. That's what I see Fern as doing.

Some people like the nomadic lifestyle and some people have no choice when misfortunes struck. Nobody should judge anyone who lives in a van and just be nice to that person. It is what it is.

I was absolutely struck by the powerful emotion portrayed by Chloe Zhao with this film. Her ability to observe and interpret America in this way was miraculous. 🌟 As an American born in Arizona, I cannot imagine moving to China for few years and then attempting to make a film based on contemporary change. Even from a book. Then to write a screenplay from a popular book, direct and edit a film that wins the very top honors! As well as directing a world class actress to stellar results as well...Unbelievable achievement!!🌹 The music, visuals, pacing and build of Nomadland was exceptional!

This movie has many different interpretations. I saw it as Fern's story of adapting with the changes of life and doing so on her own terms to find a new happiness. When her husband dies, Fern loses everything that has defined her life thus far. She has the option of staying with her love interest or her family, but chooses her own path of being a nomad because that's the life she wants to live. I saw it as a story of personal growth through the changes of life that we all eventually face. It's a story that makes you think long after the movie ends.

As a woman about Fran's age, I loved the ending. She followed her OWN heart. I recently did the same. I chose ME! We need more movies like Nomadland. I hope Zhao wins an Oscar and continues to make thought provoking movies that portray women in "non-traditional" roles. Watch Bob Well's YT channel and you will see SEVERAL interviews with women that are have been living this lifestyle for decades. Is Hollywood finally catching up?

Nomadland was beyond beautiful. From the get-go, it drew a story with all the little crayons it left across as it progressed. It wasn't just a full one-two-three story, but it had a sort of rhythm, with many short and long intervals of emotion and wonderful camera shots. And the most exciting part of it all was when all these collected moments built up - it transformed into a sorrowful, yet satisfying resolution that would make any viewer feel what the character felt. Without having experienced the adventure the character took, it made me feel included.

Im digital nomad now, before 8 years ago, I had a small construction business in russia. Now I'm moving from country to country, right now I'm living in Spain. I was scared to travel for the first time, I thought that It's strange that you can't have a long and deep relationship with people you meet. But now I think it's just a different lifestyle, it has own props and cons. All of us have some kind of loneliness, but sometime you can share it with other people and feel united with them.

We saw the movie on Saturday on the big screen. We absolutely loved it. We are part time grey nomads. For me, it was uplifting and I will look at the permanent grey nomads differently. Here in Australia perhaps it’s a bit easier because there is Medicare for all. I found the bonding and the values of the people in the movie emotional.

Ms. Zhao is a genuinely great director. It's not easy using non-actors. Even the legendary director/actor Clint Eastwood wasn't able to get it over the hump when he used the actual American heroes to star in "The 15:17 to Paris". These heroes are the absolute best of us but the movie just shows how difficult it is to use real people not trained in the theatrical arts. That Ms. Zhao accomplished this in a blowout way makes her deserving of her Golden Globe and likely Oscar. On the other hand, having someone as amazing as Frances McDormand as lead makes everyone else perform even better. It's magical when it all comes together.

Nomadland places Frances McDormand in a world full of itinerant wanderers, some by necessity, some by intention. She herself is forced to uproot her previous existence, but still clings to the memories. The movie itself is filled with non-professional actors, some in fact nomads, who seem to slog from one campground to the next. The movie does not emotionalize these nomads. The viewer only gets snippets of the lives of these denizens, and only introductions to the pain and angst which lies inside them. Nomadland is a fascinating portrait, brought to life by an academy award winner who knows how to leave the showy acting pieces home, and just inhabit the character.

The words can not describe how much I loved this movie and how much I saw myself in Fern. 10/10

This movie shifted my whole paradigm. Made me rethink everything. Very stunning, raw, and freeing. We’re not going to live in a van... yet. But most Americans are drowning in stuff, debt, and meaningless consumerism working for that day so far off that we might, just might get to have a few moments in our twilight years (if we survive that long). Simplify and make connections. Find your prime directive and True North and customize your life to accommodate

I've been a nomad for the past 4 years. Left an office job and try to do my best freelancing and living this kind of lifestyle. As it was highlighted in the movie - sometimes it gets really lonely. So lonely that you need to kick yourself to move on. And then you see other people and then you make new friends. And then you see people driving in traffic and working the jobs that they absolutely don't like. They just tolerate it. Why? I don't know. Nomadic lifestyle is not a dream. It's not a fashion. It's a lifestyle of rejecting the society norms towards an "american dream" or whatever "dream" it is. It's a different life. Immersed in nature. Immersed in yourself. I think everyone should try camping in their car for some time. Maybe you'll start to like it? And if not - the regular life is always somewhere nearby. The question is... Will you want to go back there?

I think the movie shows one woman's life and a way to reinvent yourself. IMHO, I know A LOT of women who have been married 30, 40, or 50 years before their husband had died, and we all have talked about if we would remarry. The answer is almost always "no"...it's almost as if remarrying would negate your love and your life memories with your 1st spouse. I find this with men also, altho men are statistically far more likely to remarry than women. Fern was treated wonderfully and accepted almost immediately by Dave's family, but I think the key point was, if Fern would have stayed, she would have lived Dave's life. We saw that in the scene with Fern being uncomfortable taking care of Dave's grandchild, and ESPECIALLY in the last scene before she leaves the next morning, when she is sitting on the steps watching Dave live his life with his son, playing piano with him, as they had always done and will do. The camera panned around the empty house the next morning that she left showing the house she would have been expected to be at almost all the time if she had stayed. Fern would have had to fit into HIS family and lived HIS already established life and she didn't want to do that. (P.S. This film also shows why...even tho it IS a choice...why it's a good thing to have kids and establish a family, just IMHO.)

#Nomadland was my first movie for 2021 and I'm glad I watched it. Frances McDormand is one of my favourite actors ever since Fargo and she never fails to impress. An intelligent script with wonderful performances from the whole cast. A must see movie....

A deep and philosophical look at the Nomad lifestyle. Spectacular cinematography and characters fits perfect. In the end we all nomads, nothing is permanent, we are all just in transition moving along in endless repeating patterns. There is no beginning and no end. As the leader of the Nomad community said is: ‘See you down the road’. A very deep and thoughtful movie of life and its meaning. Strongly recommended!

Just finished watching for the first time after Nomadland won best picture. And though I was rooting for Viola to win best actress, I’m glad Frances won. No one could have played Fern better. Her performance was absolutely amazing and very so real. Never did I once feel she was acting. Also, I love how everyone used their actual names. Congratulations to Frances McDormand and Chloe Zhao on their Oscars!🍾 It was well deserved. 🙏

It’s a beautiful quiet film. Gave me some sadness thinking of people who for one reason or other are van living Frances McDormand is the only woman who could have played that role. I hope she wins everything!

What an ODD review. Mismatching scenes with dialogue. Totally disconnected, weird review. And then you don’t even explain the ending. Sounds like an Artificial Intelligence reading a bad script.

Zhao is a common Chinese dit name; Chloe is a popular Latin-based name. The United States of Amazon is the setting. Can't be more neutral than that.

Living in mainstream society is a traumatic experience most are numb to. Living in her house in Empire, Fern always had an eye on the freedom and vastness of life just beyond her backyard. She went there, taking only the most essential possessions and memories. Any of us can do that at any moment, no matter what our situation. People find that freedom even in literal prisons. It takes a radical shift in perspective and some time for it to stabilize.

A beautiful, unhurried character study. Give it some time and it grows on you. Makes you think of the lives led by the less fortunate and yet, celebrates the uniqueness of their existence. The background score and the stunning visuals are additional characters. But it is McDormand's performance that will hold you, long after the credits have rolled. One of the year's best.

First of all that was Swankie Fern was speaking with, as Swankie described her determination to not due from cancer in the hospital. Bob and Fern discuss her husband Bo and Bob’s eldest son who died by suicide five years earlier. Your clips don’t show Bob... or that interaction.

Just finished watching Nomadland and have to say I just loved this movie, I just loved the pace of the story and how there was no need for sex or violence; it was just a great slow moving story, in a way it kind of similar as the movie "Boyhood". Would love to see more movies like these

I haven't seen the movie yet, but it seems they did take some liberties from the book, which was first-rate. I'm looking forward to this. Pretty sure it's going to be an amazing experience.

The thing with these people is - this is a phase of their lives. For some - it may be the final phase in that they will die on the road - but - for others - they will get to the point where they just can't take care of themselves on the road and may need someone else to take care of them as they get older. .

When I saw the title, Nomadland, I knew it was going to be good.

Excellent, thought-provoking movie - I will be thinking about Fern for some time. Frances McDormand can simply do no wrong and the acting, even by the nomads themselves, drew you in. The scenery was breathtaking albeit a bit visually gloomy - which only seemed to multiply Fern's sadness and solitude. As someone who has traveled in the bright Arizona sun, I found that a bit off. Perhaps in the theatre, this may show better.

We liked this movie, very inspirational. In few years, we would definitely give this lifestyle a try.

Somewhat reminds me of the 1960's Flower Children, Love Children and free love; which were all trying to find a new piece, without working the traditional cookie cutter lifestyle. Think what ended this era was absence of medical issues/needs and retirements, because at a certain point in ones life, the body starts giving out to weather and tear on our gene pool.

I think the protagonist is someone who is scared to connect with people and scared to live life. Her husband's lifestyle and isolation allowed her to hide from this struggle but she is forced to change. She HAS to interact and meanwhile she is exploring the world. I think the ending means that she made peace with her struggles and she is not scared anymore to get out of her comfort zone and live life differently, explore, travel and connect with a few people. In the beginning everything was loud and unsettling but in the end it was peaceful. The theme of the movie is: Before I die, what have I lived? Some people dont live either because they are scared or because they are victims of capitalism etc..

This was a tough one for me to watch. I found it heartbreaking.

An amazing and moving film.

Frankly I see the ending of the film differently. I see Fern as someone afraid to love again, afraid to share her life again with another, unwilling to risk the heartache of loss again, unable to fully recover from the loss of her past life which she found fulfilling and willing to live life at the fringe of modern society barely existing in order to avoid the loss of comfort and love again which she feels she would not survive.

i found that nomadland truly depressing. it is very sad how human beings live like this because they cannot afford a home. this trend is growing, and is truly sad.

I just watched the film last night = it was fantastic! Worth watching.

I though it was weird that Fern worked 3 months for Amazon and couldn't pay a $2300 car repair bill. She had to have made at least $6000 in that 3 months since her camping space was provided and she doesn't appear to eat much and certainly isn't spending money on clothing so is she just bad with money or what?

There's another set of people out there, under 40 out there living the same life for adventure, and yet another out there who choose to live this way solely for financial reasons. Seems this way of life will be more common as time goes by. I have no need to live this way but want to, just for the fun of it. Guess I'm mentally in the under 40 group.

I'd like to know if I'm the only one who wonders why Fern isn't collecting her husbands social security. Obviously she is old enough to even collect her own because the job interviewing woman asks her to consider retirement & Fern says she doesn't think she can survive on it. Well surely if her husband worked at USG all those years there would be a sizeable soc sec income for her to collect. If she didn't claim it, then she was foolish & rejected a benefit that he paid into and worked for his whole life.

I wanted to love this movie, but I didn't. I think because I just couldn't get my head around Fern. I don't know what motivates her. She didn't seem to have any source of joy or meaning in life or her lifestyle as most of the other nomads did.. And I couldn't understand abandoning your sister, why wouldn't you want family relationships even if you choose the nomad life? I felt for the sister. And Fern did not seem to have a story arc, she was one note the whole movie. I just didn't get it.

To each his or her own. However, to me, Nomadland is a depressing movie. Everyone, no matter who it is, has the challenge of finding a way to survive and prosper. This means: (1) finding income; (2) having a place to stay; and (3) having a means of transportation-- even if it is by foot express. Individuals can survive like wandering gypsies, but I rather not go through the hardships, struggles, and deprivations, which come with the nomadic lifestyle. There are better ways to prosper, and if I want to see other places-- and I have already been on both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and throughout the United States, which includes Alaska, I can travel there on a vacation. I had my fill of nature and living in mountains, deserts, and forests under the stars at night while serving in the United States Marine Corps Infantry.

Most all the folks in this film have homes and choose not to be homeless or houseless. Why romanticize agony when you can walk down many streets filled with drug-addicted and mentally Ill terrorists waiting to harm you or themselves? Our political views don't matter anymore as it is all too clear that we live in a failing nation of morally decrepit beings doomed to become the next historical lesson. We learned nothing.

Everyone who chooses this life style chooses there selves it really is a simpler way to live but not without sacrifice I myself could never go back to renting an apartment or renting a room from someone to me it's complete freedom that family and friends will never understand.

This movie was completely depressing to me. The short happy moments were quickly over shadowed by the sadness. A very somber movie and look at life in my opinion

As a former nomad myself I found this film irresponsible and fantastical. It is immensely dangerous and life threatening especially for a single woman. Yes there are wonderful people but there are far more predators are sociopaths who prey on the naive. Many many times people will object to your parking/camping on their property and they can be violent. Please think very long and carefully about this life before you depart. It is dirty, lonely and scary on a daily basis. As a film the cinematography is beautiful but there are no transitions and I did not care for the use of amateur actors when so many actors are out of work. And no I am not an actor I am in IT which you will need some skills in on the road. Think again.
