Following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.

I saw this movie a week after my father passed away. He was fighting cancer for two years when he got Covid in the clinic where he had his chemotherapy. What I’ve learned from this movie is that you should never give up, always keep the simple moments in your mind, they become the most beautiful memories and go on with your life as the person you lost would like you to do. -Rest in Peace Dad, I’ll see you down the road.

I'm a full-time nomad. Everyone out here has a story that's driven them to step outside of societies norms. Some of those tales begin with tragedy, but we all find family out here. A person gets the opportunity to recognize themselves in each person they meet. We are one huge, human family. ❤️

@1RonBurgundy1 respectively, I could not disagree with you more. At the risk of possibly being too existential for this reply to be understood, there is only one Being, only one Consciousness. You are me, but in a different form, as I am you, any different form. Those people who you deem as your alleged enemies, are also you, in another form. I love everybody. Everybody. I watched it and felt they were not even acting. It was real life. I liked that there was no sex, no bad language, no violence, no fast cars or accidents or explosions. I loved the compassion and vulnerability. That suffering man, talking about his son committing suicide, is something I will never forget in this life.

This movie is so authentic. There are so many people who go through these emotions even if they are not nomads and I think that’s what makes this unique and great. The friendship, the loss, the adventure, the grief and the sorrow. All of it. If you have truly lived your life then this movie will resonate with you. Enjoy the good times because it is true that they are not forever and for the brief moments they are happening they are wonderful. See you down the road.

@@stevensong8784 Correct. 趙 (Zhao) is indeed Chinese (or a 堂堂正正的中國人as I would prefer to say). That is, in fact, what makes her a great ‘new’ American. We need immigrants to keep our nation motivated, vibrant, and alive. Zhao is 38. Her American-born contemporaries include Greta Gerwig. Can you imagine Gerwig making a film like Nomadland? My view is that Gerwig would not be capable of creating such a film. Zhao created Nomadland BECAUSE she is Chinese-born and American-made. She is, in essence, the epitome of 21st Century New Americana because she takes action; she is not a victim; she does not make lofty political statements (I.e. X X Matters). She creates work with tremendous gravitas.

You are not homeless when you lose your house, but when you lose the people you have lived with. During our youth, we meet a lot of people and make lots of friends, but as time goes, you realize that these were short-lived friendships. They seemed important to us then, but now you realize that it was just a mirage. Only family is important. Everything else is less important. When you lose your parents, when you lose your spouse, only then do you understand what it means to be really alone.

I was crying a lot when I finished this beautiful film, my family looked at me all disappointed and asking why are you crying, there were not action they said, I looked at them and I asked them did you really watched the deepest of this film or just were expecting drama, cars, guns, action, blood? In my humble opinion and perspective, this is a metaphor to our lives, the " trip" that she was taking is like our " LIFE" we are driving our van, we sleep, we wake up, we got to work, we MEET PEOPLE on our way, these people go, or just dissapear from your life, or just died, we have memories hidden in our hearts, we dont want to share all our life with people, we fell in love then we dont, and there we go driving, driving, driving, living, enjoying,. looking for an answer to our lives, looking for a home, a home where we can be happy, and real, and if we dont find to we keep driving, driving, driving.in my head I saw that from that film, I explained this to my family and then one day when I came home there they were watching it again, they looked at me and just smiled, yes I started crying again, this film is beautiful, the landscapes, the story, the acting, the sun, the desert, one day I was waiting for the bus and I saw the big signs on the walls, and she was holding a lamp, in the next one she was sitting relaxing like in a spa with the other old lady, then the next one she was in the middle of the mountains, and then I thought how many times we dont appreciate what we have right here, right now, we are so small, we have a lot around us and sometimes we are just living, eating, working. working. working, and NOT enjoying for a moment, I looked up and I saw the beautiful sun I step to the front and I let the sun hug me, I breathed very deep, and I closed my eyes, every time I pass by the same wall (close to my home) I yell inside my head NOMADLAND I LOVE YOU. appreciate what you have today, right now, dont wait for tomorrow. smile right now and look round you. LIFE IS TODAY. thank you for reading this.

I lived this way for years and loved it. That "laundromat mall" is in Ehrenberg, AZ and was my 2nd home for supplies and meeting good people. A year ago I became too ill to continue. Bless all the Nomads I came to know and love. I know all that terrain just shown, and those camp fires with kindred souls, and I was in a couple of those scenes shown, and camped with some people I see in this trailer. I'm still a Nomad at heart. Always! I love you all! This brings me to tears. If I see my camper in the background I'll cry for sure.

This was a strange and beautiful movie. I was kind of in a trance watching it. It was oddly calming despite the subject matter. Frances Mcdormand is in a class of her own. Amazing.

I finally got around to watch this, as it's the genre of film I absolutely love. It's a great film, truly, McDormand's performance alone is spectacular. Also, the OMP soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful. I haven't seen a film like this that's moved me in a while.

Excellent movie. I like how it doesn't try to glamorize modern van life. This is "real" van life. Very lonely and not perfect by any means.

Yes but I also really liked that it didn't indulge in the "negatives" Of live out of a van/car ie constant threat of being robbed and etc

Got to see this twice and it is easily my favorite film of the year. I was absolutely captivated at the trance this film puts on you as a viewer by making you feel like you’ve followed the characters for years on this journey even though it had only been 2 hours. Also the acting is incredible from everyone. From the professional actors to the real nomads they casted only a few hours before shooting! An absolutely legendary movie and not a second of it has been forgettable. It is just as touching as you can imagine and if not, more so. Cannot wait to see everyone’s reaction to this one!

Here's another interesting one for you, look for "Who is Bozo texino", it's about hobo life on the rails. I saw the film at a little outdoor showing back in the 90's when visiting friends in Tucson. It looks like it's on youtube, look it up.

Oh boy. We of the nomad lifestyle are already a bit scared of the influx covid is bringing... Please anyone who wants to join this lifestyle, pick up after yourself. Be respectful. Take care of our planet and be thoughtful of the non nomads who are scared that you may be violent/a thief/on drugs. Show them that you can still be a good member of society while living in a vehicle.

I understand your concern. I hope the movie doesn't over glamorize the lifestyle to where there is an influx of people who don't respect the areas where nomads are welcome, to the point that they are no longer welcome (trash left behind, natural beauty tampered with, etc.).

With no disrespect to Meryl, I agree with you. She's a most amazing actor, and maybe I'm speaking just for myself, but she has just a wee bit too much elegance in her persona for me to make this part believable. They could not have made a better choice than Frances -- she brings 100% to all her characters. I can't wait to see this film. You see -- I am houseless -- but not homeless! Ha!
