We've done tons of IUPAC nomenclature for simple molecules, but once we start introducing multiple rings, things get trickier. This is especially the case because there are so many ways to get multiple rings. They can be fused, they can be bicyclic, aromatic or aliphatic, and every type has its own rules. 5:08 Obvious question: You say we always want the lowest numbering. Why then exactly is it not 1,3,5,6 rather than 1,2,5,7? Is it lowest numbering at every new comparative step going up the chain of ascending numbers? (and not, say, lowest overall numbering given lowest first number in ascending order) Do I get a cookie? Great video btw, as always!

no it's a good question! i think that it's simply because two is lower than one, since the sum of the numbers is the same, so i think it's just comparatively lower at the first point of difference

because carbon 1 is necessarily a carbon adjacent to the bridgehead carbons
