Can you get the perfect dress watch for $1500, well you can get pretty close! In this video I talk about all the reasons I love Nomos and a couple reasons why they still just miss the mark.
*Yes I know I played Bach while talking about the Ludwig. Beethoven just doesn't make for good background music 🤷‍♂️

I love the longer lugs as it makes my 36 mm club campus seem like a little pocket watch strapped to the wrist. I also appreciate the 'traditional' design as it harkens back to the Glashutte watchmaking tradition despite Nomos being only 30 years old. Of course, the design isn't just traditional as it has just as many futuristic, and even avant-garde/seemingly conflicting design cues. They almost seem as if they're molten and elongated, kinda like the Cartier crash, and play quite nicely with the light.

Love my 38 Club Campus Nacht with the display back. Took me a minute to warm to it, but it’s a semi daily now and among my favorite. Looking forward to purchasing the Zurich world timer in blue. I don’t mind the longer lugs, however I’m not a fan of the models with the straight lugs that seem less about integrating with the dial (like the tangente) and more about holding up a dial. Otherwise, I’m a huge fan of Nomos as they are the company that got me into this hobby. - Excellent vid! Keep up the excellent production. 😎👍🏼

I get what you mean. My take is that it ha been chosen as a form over function (for a group of regular-and-down-sized wrists). It's kinda interesting that a brand that has been closely linked with the Bauhaus movement is breaking maybe the most famous ethos of said movement. Dont get me wrong, Nomos is maybe my favorite watchmaker, but it's a interesting observation.

@@ClaudioLeon1 It's a tough question to answer definitively. The Nomos has the quality, the inhouse movement and very much the current zeitgeist. Stowa has history and brand equity as well as a reputation for making very reliable and affordable watches. The Antea with a solid German silver rota is a fine watch with a ETA movement that is well proven and accurate. You can own either and be confident you have a fine watch.

I’ve always said you can take a taxi from the watch strap to the side of the case, so that does help with the almost incomprehensible distance there. So you know this brand has made many watches that I almost really want but then something about them puts them in the “not” category. Like there’s a recent one I loved, but solid caseback… why ? If any company should always show the movement, it’s them. Anyway. Great video as always Max. ( I was distracted by the Bach while you were talking about Beethoven though ☺️) ( I would LOVE that LE World Timer though )

I like the lugs, I love how their watches look like they're kind of suspended on your wrist rather than the strap/bracelet being right up against the case.
@typebflieger
@typebflieger 2 жыл бұрын
I think the simplicity of Nomos can leave us unprepared for the ways their pieces are challenging. The long lugs are clearly not an oversight, but an integral part of the Nomos design language. It forces you put the lug to lug measurement ahead of diameter when determining the proper size for your wrist. One positive is you can get a watch in a diameter that might normally appear diminutive and find it wears more substantially than expected. My 35mm Orion wears like a 37mm watch due to the long lugs. I had assumed I’d go with a 38mm… until I tried one on. Furthermore, the strap gap isn’t unsightly, IMO, just different. We’ve frankly been conditioned to expect - and prefer - shorter lugs with a small gap since that’s what most brands offer. Like I said, Nomos looks simple, but it can be unexpectedly challenging.
@WatchCrunchOfficial
@WatchCrunchOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the interesting perspective! I gave myself about a year to get a custom to the lugs, and though on the Ludwig I think I almost got there because at least it feels like a design choice, the lugs on the club is kind of just fat and uninteresting 😅

@@WatchCrunchOfficial I know what you mean. If I had jumped at a 38mm Orion without first having seen one in the metal, I’d be doing battle with the lugs too! The Orion has a thin elegant sweep, like the bent teeth of a fork. The Club lugs look almost like the top view of the batmobile wheel wells.

I like the long lugs, it makes a dressier small watch center better on the wrist. Short lugs are good on large dive watches to make them more wearable on small or medium wrists. Only thing I dislike about my Grand Seiko from the 90's is the short lugs - it makes a 37mm wear like 34mm.

I agree with most of your points, but to classify a design aesthetic like longer lugs as an “afterthought” is a bit short sighted. Certainly the look of the lugs (which I enjoy) are subjective and potentially polarizing, but an afterthought? There’s far too much intention in their design language to diminish it with that kind of a descriptor. By the way, I’d love to see/hear your take on the Nomos Club Sport 42 in blue. Thanks for the review, I can't really disagree with any of the points you made. I have the Ludwig neomatik DUW3001 movement in 36mm. It has a different dial to your example but still clearly a Ludwig but with a red small seconds hand and small blue minute numbers on the chapter ring. Oh and mine does not have the railroad minute markers but does have the markers. It wears bigger than the dimensions as you say as there is minimal bezel and the lugs look longer compared to other watches but it looks fine on my 7" wrist. The big thing is that the case is incredibly thin for an automatic at 7mm including the display case back. A simple classic looking dress watch that if it had any slight niggles would be an audible winding rotor. I'm thinking about one of the Club models or even the square Tetra in the future.

I’m pretty sure the long lug designs are intentional, but I too would prefer them to be shorter. The Orion would be my ideal dress watch.

Analysis paralysis. Watch enthusiasts tend to get caught up in the dimensions of a particular watch before it even lands on their wrists. I think in this situation the lugs are not that long at 47 and 48 mm. Also keep in mind if the case is that thin the lugs are going to sit closer to the wrists. Ultimately I have learned to don’t write off a watch until you put it on your wrist.
@WatchCrunchOfficial
@WatchCrunchOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Yes very true, gotta try watches on. But for my wrist, the lugs are too long for the case size. Someone with a bigger wrist might make it work. Ultimately it comes down to proportions, and the lugs are a disappointment on most NOMOS in that respect.

I think the Club's long lugs are a design choice that call to mind a certain vintage aesthetic. Most modern watches instead have short lugs because the case diameter is bigger. But yes the 36 mm Club definitely wears bigger than most others
@WatchCrunchOfficial

It's a design choice for sure, more so for the Ludwig than the club to be eyes

I always wanted Nomos Club until I learned about the lug-to-lug distance. Why? What purpose does it serve? I somewhat understand why Hamilton does that. At least their most popular models are field or aviation watches that are aimed to be worn on NATOs, but what's the deal with Nomos.

Of these two watches, I prefer the Club model, although the red-orange color on the hands and numbers was not the best choice. Its case is nicer than that of the Ludwig, but it is fully polished (scratches everywhere). All in all, something is missing from these watches so that at first glance they make you exclaim "I want it!". Thanks for the video. Greetings from Chile.

I love the nomos lugs, they allow me to downsize the watch without it sitting weird on the wrist. and with the dressy no bezel design, the face could be way too big easily on "normal sizes" amd miss the understatement I look for in such a watch this way I could get the 35 mm, or even the 33mm easily, keeping the dressy no bezel shape, while being not too big that you lost between the marks, while still wearing it well on the wrist it's a good compromise that I glad nomos make but not being able to pull off a 38mm does sound weird also just for reference, the Ludwig 38 face is about 20% bigger in diameter than the speedy. and that's a 42mm watch
