ESPECIALLY if you're a man who doesn't have a wife and children depending on him, then it is absolutely our obligation to step in and potentially take the hit for the sake of imposing order and defending your fellow human beings against wayward criminals and creeps who are sadly so lost that they woukd victimize people in public. So yeah; I don't judge the women, or the elderly for not intervening - but young able bodied men should be shamed into doing something in a situation like this (or an even more dire situation like the one Daniel Penny found himself in). In general we as a culture have forgotten that men and women have moral obligations to behave a certain way in a civilized society. Even if it's not easy, or it's not what you prefer to do, or if you won't get praised for it, or if it entails a certain risk... Decent men have an obligation to defend women from bad men. Always. Now there's also some obligations that women in particular have that people don't like to talk about anymore, but I won't go there because people find those truths offensive and not feminist. But the reality is doing the right thing can come at a cost - to your ego, safety, freedom, comfort... And it's precisely for that reason that we need to socially shame people into doing the right thing. If it were always easy and safe, then there'd be no reason to have social norms that pressure people into doing it.
