I would imagine Ricky fully understands why Steve Carell left The Office, since he has always moved on from his own shows after a couple of seasons, rather than allowing them to become stale. (He only did two short seasons of The Office in the UK, two seasons of Extras, and two seasons of Derek.) I think his latest show, After Life, might be on its third season, but he's known for not wanting to keep making endless seasons of something just because it's popular. If anyone can appreciate why Carell felt the need to move on, it would be Ricky himself.

That is really the biggest difference between US and UK shows in general and why I tend to like British shows a lot more. One exception of a show not going stale that has been on for a long time would be South Park imo, and that is mostly due to the creators never relinquishing control

Your outro reminds of a quote about the difference between knowledge and wisdom: "Knowledge is knowing that Frankenstein is not the monster. Wisdom is knowing that Frankenstein is the monster". Bohemian like you is such a great song! That really took me back. The first song recommendation that came to mind in the same vein is Disco 2000 by Pulp, should be right up your ally. Recently read Rant based on your recommendation. What a ride that was! It's a strange book, I didn't love a lot of it but I know I'll be thinking about it for a long time. That seems to be the Chuck Palahniuk way and I'm on a journey through his work now. I have a song for you: Fliptrix - See the Sun. A lot of rap is dark/grimy whereas this to me is cautiously optimistic which is what I need. The sample is absolutely exquisite too, it's from First Aid Kit - Jagadamba You Might and it's a haunting, beautiful song mixed perfectly with Fliptrix. I rep it on rainy or cloudy Uk days and when the suns out and it lifts my mood no matter what. Plus it got me into First Aid Kit too who I can't recommend enough.
@NoProtocol
@NoProtocol 2 ай бұрын
I’m glad you read it! Yeah it’s definitely strange. Totally understand about there being parts you didn’t like, the same happened to me but by the end I thought it was interestingly tied together in a way I didn’t see coming until the last chapters. That was my first example of the grandfather paradox. Listening to See the Sun as I type and I really like it! I was actually making a hip-hop mix & this will fix nicely. I don’t know First Aid Kid yet, I’ll check it out after this. Thanks for the recommendation (:

@@NoProtocol The way so many things tied in towards the end was amazing. It was definitely a unique read and I think a re-read is necessary to catch bits I missed first time round. The part early on when his mom changed the way she viewed Rant after discovering the bogeys on his wall was unexpectedly powerful! Chuck has a way of using gross or extreme things to make really powerful commentaries, it's eye opening. Wow, I'm happy you listened to See the Sun and like it! UK hip hop is one of my biggest passions, if you want anymore tracks I'd be happy to share them. I love powerful + intricate lyrics and samples which you wouldn't expect to hear in a rap song. Thanks so much for your videos. The format is brilliant and they brighten up my day, keep it up!
@NoProtocol
@NoProtocol 2 ай бұрын
I did end up reading it twice at different ages. The second time made more sense but yeah the way he even the boogers had meaning was insane. He’s such a good writer. Sometimes I listen to Loyle Carner or Pinty but I could stand to expand my library with more UK hip-hop! Thanks for watching the videos, I’m just glad you like them (:
@zHawkC
@zHawkC 2 ай бұрын
@@NoProtocol Chuck is amazing, his Make Something Up short stories are worth reading. Mainly for the longest story in the book, Inclinations, which is haunting! Thanks for introducing me to his work. Ok strap in, I'll only give you a few music suggestions to avoid overwhelming you! 1. Jehst. The king of UK hip hop, our own version of Nas. The entire Return of the Drifter EP is incredible, first song I'd try would be Alcoholic Author as it has my favourite line in hip hop ("Cut the weather vane. I hear blood water tapping the lord's morse code on my window pane"), the whole song is quoteable tbh. His metaphors are elite and often beautiful and the grainy voice audio, combined with the beats and his love of record scratches enhances the feel of a lot of his songs. If you like it next songs up are 1979 and City of Industry (same album). 2. The Four Owls. One of my favourite groups who rap about all sorts, they have deep songs and stoner songs. Listen to Old Earth first, it hits in a similar way to See the Sun. Fliptrix is one of the 4 members and they all have great solo albums too. Leaf Dog (their main producer who also raps) has a unique voice and just released a track with Snoop Dogg. 3. I'm torn who to recommend for the final one. Based on your videos I'm going to go for a storyteller, Ed Scissor (formerly Edward/Ed Scissortongue). Song to start is The Prospector, a sci fi story about a future where mankinds mega corporations mine the moon ("He was woken by the sound of cycles in the silence, a second birth. Synthesising artificial bodies out of stasis"). Or Theremin, inspired by the Terminator/Matrix. His older stuff is his best, he does spoken word poetry now but he does do 'normal' rap songs lol, Better Luck Next Life is a great album. I'll leave it there, always happy to send you more later, some of them are quite dark. As you can tell I love sharing these underappreciated artists! Thanks for reading, have a lovely day

Music recommendation from a song between 2000 and 2009? Sure, how about Herbert Grönemeyer with the song "Der Weg" (EN/US: the way ; meaning: the road you go in life) from the album "Mensch" (EN/US: human), published 2002. He devoted this song to his wife who died in 1998 from breast cancer, just 4 days after his brother died. Side note: He was one of the actors in the 1981 movie "Das Boot", an anti war movie about the experiences of a submarine crew in ww2. Info from wikipedia: An adaptation of Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 German novel based on his experiences aboard German submarine U-96 . Das Boot received positive reviews, and was nominated for six Academy Awards; two of these (Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay) went to Petersen himself. He was also nominated for a BAFTA Award and DGA Award. Edit: Just figured - seems he also produced/composed(?) most of the sound tracks of the movie "The American" with George Clooney as star actor. Aswell as ... he acted in and made the soundtrack of "A most wanted man". But that just as additional Info. Herbert Gränemeyer is first and foremost a singer and songwriter, maybe the most successful one in Germany with German songs.

I think Ricky Gervais is the funniest and most ruthless celebrity out there. I feel him and George Carlin would've been great friends.
