Norah Jones has been a multi-Grammy winning artist and with her new album 'Daybreak', she goes back to her jazz roots. In an interview with Sunetra Choudhury, the Texas singer talks about how her father Ravi Shankar's influence makes her sing a Hindi song to her baby every night and how Donald Trump worries her.

What Indian has done for her? She is an American and she earn her own identity. Her father bring no fame to her but her mother did everything

The only thing that's clearly visible is that from her Indian genes she has definately learner the art of being simple in a chaotic part of the world. & Nobody can replace a mother but if her father's identity is to be known then a trip to the Mother's city is indispensable.

@gaitrysharma-bhogal5583 Actually, not really. She did take a few "classes" with him after she reconnected with the Indian side of her family tree, but it wasn't really like father teaching daughter. She actually owes far more of that to her mums side, because Sue's the one who nurtured Norah's prodigious ability, getting her signed up to church choirs, getting her piano lessons, helping to guide her to Jazz School. And Norah also took inspiration from her mothers music collection. My point is that all Ravi would have been able to impart on his daughter, is more akin to opening her eyes more to a new aspect of music, to add to her already very extensive reportoire, which is factually no different to what she tends to do, anyway. Norah, is ALWAYS learning. I also think you put too much stock in the genetic legacy. Yes, Norah Jones is a musical genius, she was a prodigy, and her father was a genius with the Sitar and one of India's biggest stars. And her half sister has followed his legacy. But, and this is to the best of my knowledge and with no disrespect intended. None of her Indian family, can SING like Norah. I've heard Anoushka on Norah's playing along with Podcast. Shes pretty good. But her sister she is not, when it comes to singing. Norah was born with that unique to her. Unless her mum secretly has a great voice, and decided to be a promoter of music, instead. Or she was given it by a mythical being I won't believe in unless I meet my end and it FORCES me to believe n it. Either way. Her father DIDN'T give Norah that voice.

Norah's music and songs do not need funs from any particular country or origin, just good persons with souls to listen and feel/ enjoy her interpretation.

The first time I believe I have ever seen this. Oh do I love that wonderful songbird. I've been a fan of her's since late 2001, I think, even before her first album came out. Found out about her listening to BBC Radio 1 or 2, can't remember which. But it was "Don't know why". I used to record songs I liked onto a mix tape. But that voice invaded my head. I begun just humming the song continuously, but you know when that normally happens it gets old quick? It DIDN'T get old when it was her. That's when I knew I had to buy her music. Not that I found out who she even was until months later, and her album had already come out. First time I heard the name, Norah Jones, was when she was 1 in the top 40. And it's more than just about the music, with Norah. The woman in that interview, that's Norah now, 6 years later, it was Norah 10 years, 12 years, 14 years before this video was posted. She is so consistently, wonderfully "her". A kind and wonderful, mostly soft spoken woman, who's only ever changed by gaining more confidence and self belief, which no one deserves more. She is one of the best musicians in the world, as I see it. I could type about her for hours, and I would, if I didn't stop myself. She's wonderful, and that is the be all and end all of it.

I have added Nora Jones to my meditation repertoire. I am learning to listen to the instrument of the voice and not necessarily the meaning of the words; the meaning is really in the music and the music of the voice. Thank you Nora-and Anoushka-for this new quality of life. Witch

Nothing against you, but "self-identification" is a rather political idea popularized by activists of gender-switching. This idea is devised to detach one from her ancestral (parental) genetic gift, both GOOD or BAD gifts. Coming back to Norah Jones, her music instinct undoubtedly sprouted genetically from her father (the good gift), even him being an absentee dad (the bad gift).

But she does. Why can't people be multifaceted in your world-view? She is half Indian so Indian people have a right to see her as one of theirs as much as any American would, and it wont do you or anyone else any favours getting upset by that. Seriously, focus on your own self identity, you have no right to dictate anyone else's or be mock outraged on their behalf just because you can't control your impulsive bigotry.

omg, most Filipinos from Philippines do that as well. When they see a Filipino American (who has never been to the Philippines or doesn't know Filipino culture/language) became successful in American entertainment, they would claim those celebrities as one of our own. Examples are Enrique Iglesias, Nicole Scherzinger, Vanessa Hudgens, Rob Schneider, Jessica Sanchez, and the list goes on. As long they have Filipino ancestry, local Filipino news outlets always claim and makes news reports about them 😅 But for me, I see them as Americans and foreigners.

She belongs to the world, in the great schemes of things. More specifically speaking, a community of people who have always fought back from every adversary in life, be it gaining their freedom or academic challenges or from poverty. The influence of music and arts is in her blood literally speaking. But most wouldn't understand those things, but it's important to be informed.👍

Self-identification is devised to detach one from her ancestral (parental) genetic gift, both GOOD or BAD gifts. For Norah, her music instinct is undoubtedly sprouted genetically from her father (the good gift), even him being an absentee dad (the bad gift). So, stop yelling "she does not identify with being X". It really misses the point. All we have to acknowledge, even Norah does, is that her dad unknowingly spouted seeds of music talents to her "from the beginning".

It's a matter of choice don't you think she is not an Indian by birth as simple as that. That she should connect to her ancestors or stay with her motherland is clearly her choice. You can go to a zoo and stand in front of a cage of apes and shout ancestry all day is clearly upto you. She doesn't connect with India, don't understand why it so hard for you guys to understand what's the need to bring Mendel DNA RNA bullshit
