My Remington shaver only 2 or 3 years old stopped holding a charge. It has been getting progressively worse over the last several months. It still worked ok if connected to the AC adaptor. I replaced the 2 original 600mah(AAA) NimH batteries with 2000mah(AA) energizer NiMh batteries you can get almost anywhere.

Amazing that the AAs actually fitted in there so easily. The cheapskates could have used them from the get go.

Replaced the batteries as you describe in the video. Added a small piece of electrical tap on the bottom to stop a potential short. Batteries lasted 15 days with the first charge. Second charge was not quiet as long 12 days, but I had a lot of beard to take off a couple of times. Thanks for the video - saved a few bucks.

I have been soldering to batteries like that for years, but I would like to buy one of the little spot welders and the flat tabs so I have the same type of connections that devices come with.

Very similar to the Phillips shavers, though I did have the tiny little charge controller chip self destruct. Impressive chip, input voltage range is from 12VDC to 270VAC, and it has a tiny sugar cube size transformer it uses to provide charge to the 2 AA cells. Also done some Panasonic shavers, which have a linear motor with spring returns, that drives the shaving head with a sine like oscillation, and which are pretty complex as well, but of course 2 AA cells that go bad. Yes most are clipped together, and also have pretty good neoprene rubber seals, though they can be a pain to get to lie properly in the grooves while you put the unit together. Also had a very old Philishave that ran off AC only, with a tiny little 100V DC universal motor in it that drove via a small gearboc the shaving heads, and also had a ballast resistor add on that you need to run it off 220VAC mains.

I did the same thing to my Braun razor. Clever idea to use solder wick to bridge the batteries. I've found Tenergy NiMH from frys (RIP) to be pretty good, consistently get 2000+mAh at each charge. Had them for at least 7 yrs now for the kids xbox controllers.

FYI Chemtronics still exists. I just ordered some solder wick and cleaning supplies from their website.

Gonna have to do the same with my Lidl shaver. Goes normally down to 40ish% then the next day is at 1%.

Solder wick as a conductor! Genius! What did you use to carve out the plastic to fit the AA batteries?

Is that the trick to solder to batteries...getting over 800 degrees on your iron?? I’ve got some kids toys batteries whose leads broke off but my butane iron won’t seem to flow the existing solder.

Hey, great video. just what I was looking for. I did the same modification on my Remington PG6045. Swapped the two AAA 730mA batteries with two AA NiMH 2700mA(supposedly) batteries. I had to carve out the plastic holdings on both the top and the bottom of the body completely and then used sandpaper to make them flush with the body. But the difference is, I installed them in parallel instead of series to bring the voltage down to 1.2V from 2.4V. Because I am used to an older model (PG6030) which ran at 1.2V, and at 2.4V the blades of the trimmer ran a bit too warm for me. My question is, how to know when my batteries are fully charged. as my trimmer doesn't have a charge level indicator. I am using an external USB voltmeter to judge the voltage and current being pulled by the trimmer charging port (which is a micro USB port). It's pulling 70mA at 5.10V. estimating that the combined capacity of the batteries would at least be 4000mAh, I have kept it on this charge for almost two days now. it has pulled 3000mAh (shown on the USB voltmeter) so far, which I doubt is the exact amount delivered to the batteries. The current voltage on the batteries right now is 1.43V when checked with a digital voltmeter after unplugging the charger. What method would you recommend to estimate if the batteries are fully charged or not? and would you suggest any other changes in this modification? P.S. I am a med student, not too tech savvy, would appreciate simpler explanation, lol :p

My razor had a thermal sensor that measured the temperature of the batteries. When the batteries are fully charged the input current will be lost as heat the the razor recognizes that and stops the charge.

Hi! Thanks for this video. I missed in the video, how you cut our the plastic part? how you measured it and which tool have you used? Also how you placed back the trimmer? :) Regarding the batteries eneloop 1900 should be the best, if charging cycle also matters. But it is important that you dont buy china made eneloops, but japanese made ones, which is sometimes hard to find, but you should defeinitely look for 10years discharge version

Why buy a new product which may not last beyond 12 months when you can try and save "ol' faithful" which has served you well for more than a decade? I like the practical approach to this one; I hope you get at least another 100,000 km (approx. 62,137.119 miles) or so out of that shaver before you are forced to replace it completely.
