He wanted to take responsibility and his mother's protection wouldn't let him.. He can't even tell what's real from fiction at this point either. He doesn't understand yet that the "mother" of his subconscious is different from his mother in the real world. The blame on himself is too much to bear. But his subconscious is also trying to remember what actually happened. It's twisted. But, she was also his only access to comfort. Every human craves comfort.

Screenplays are so good I am so hooked catching up. I totally ignored it at first. This series is the most underrated but its just as good as “The Walking ….d”. I couldn’t get enough of Norman’s blacked out moments. Crimes under good intentions. A dysfunction at its best.

What I don't fully understand is how Norma turns the water on in this scene even though she's not real. They can't both be physically there at the same time, one must take over the body. The water actually flows when Norma turns it on but in scenes like the dinner with Chic her cutlery or food isn't moving. Same with the scene where Norma is fighting him in the police station, Norman gets thrown across the room, yet she's not real.
