I learned today that there is a saying in the West, "We are not laughing with you, we are laughing at you." I understand that the reality that North Koreans are crying when Americans laugh at Kim Jong Un is expressed in different ways by different countries and peoples. It's time to get to know America again. Thank you so much to the viewers who are trying to tell me many things. I will try to learn more about America. Thank you very much.

I am a 74 year old American and I never heard that saying "we are not laughing with you, we are laughing at you". I have heard the opposite, "I am not laughing at you, I am laughing with you".
@americanmade6996
@americanmade6996 3 жыл бұрын
That's actually reversed. The expression is, "we are not laughing at you, we are laughing with you", meaning that we do not mean to ridicule or disrespect you personally--rather, it is the occurrence or circumstance that we find laughable, and hope that you do, too. We know Kim Jong Un is a murderous tyrant, and there is nothing funny about what he inflicts on the North Korean people. We laugh at him because he is ridiculous and petty, and wears the title "world leader" the way a small child wears her mother's shoes.

Lady Ah, the thought behind it is..."First we cry (at the wrongs), then we make fun of them (laughing at them), then we win!" Americans are laughing at him, so the last part...winning...is getting close.

There can be great pressure as a lone representative to explain an entire culture particularly one that is so grounded in the value of individuality and the melding of so many other cultures into the whole. It can be difficult to express this quickly to those who come from such a radically different environment. My answers as a female military veteran nearing 50 would be different from this young woman's, without invalidating hers. It can be important to recognize a person's background and experience when they explain "America" or what "being an American" means. (I'd LOVE to discuss our cultures and experiences together with you!) As a side note, I want to express how great you looked in those clothes! They really accented your dignified bearing, with a chic, classic style. Very pretty

What i would do to be able to have you speak to a very large group of people here in South east Texas . After , a few months of following a growing list of defector channels, my heart is smashed to pieces. I have met only one person with awareness of the situation . Its gut wrenching . Will you be traveling back to the US ? If so , do you have arranged speaking events ?

I think the reason we make fun of Kim Jong Un in memes is to disrespect him from afar. Most of us don't find him funny but it is our way of spitting in his face. I think I understand though why many defectors don't find it funny.

@@tv-iv5ic yes, its very important that its not misunderstood that these jokes mean that the suffering of NK people is also a joke. I don't think people feel that way at all. But because we have political freedom of different parties (instead of NK which outlaws other political parties), we can make fun of any government/state we want to, including our own. We use the humor sometimes to mock the things that want to be taken seriously, just to show them how they aren't truly serious at all.

When we make fun of dictators in cartoons and memes, it's not because we don't take the plight of the people they're oppression seriously. It's because we know how badly these dictators need their egos stroked. How badly they want to feel powerful and fearsome. These cartoons are meant to laugh in the face of that. We did it with H|tler, Hirohito and Mussolini as well during World War 2.
@narnia1233
@narnia1233 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, basically even though these dictators want everyone to fear them, we’re doing the opposite to stand against them. The dictators want to be seen as serious and respected out of fear, and we just look at them and say, you don’t scare me and I don’t respect you. It’s a way of saying too that you can’t control us. That using fear tactics isn’t going to work. But, that aside, I feel extremely sorry for the citizens of North Korea, including the soldiers. I sometimes wish we would just take out the evil dictators there, but I don’t want war because it’s always a terrible thing. The best scenario would be if the leadership could change in a more peaceful manner and they stop closing off their country and let their people live free.
@warriormaiden9829

The best way I can describe it is like breaking a toddler out of the habit of throwing temper tantrums. Have you ever stopped and looked at a kid in the middle of throwing a full-blown tantrum? They look utterly ridiculous. The fastest way to get them to stop? It's not bribery, or yelling, or even dumping a glass of water on them. It's to throw yourself on the floor right next to them and have a tantrum of your own. Every single kid I have done that with has stopped almost *immediately.* Those that have words start telling me how dumb or stupid I look. At that point, I stop, calmly sit up, and explain that I was just copying their behavior. 'If I looked stupid doing it, how do you think you looked? Would you want to do something for me if I was still throwing a tantrum? Did it look like I was having fun? Do you think the people watching were having fun?' And so on. Never had a kid I did that with try and pitch a fit in front of me twice. The problem here is, a dictator has too much power already. He has people to tell him that his behavior is okay, and that he will not be punished for it. Anyone within his sphere of influence that speaks up is silenced; another casualty of his country-wide 'tantrum'. Since it is not possible for another country to go in and take him to task, it leaves the only possible retaliation to outsiders (some of whom have no idea what's going on) to show him just how ridiculous and awful he is acting. All he wants is attention and control. If he is denied those things, one of two things will happen: he finally gives up (unfortunately the least likely of the two options), or things get a bit worse (pretty much the only thing left for him to do is drop a nuke on someone, which would then bring down the proverbial ton of bricks on his head. He's got a decent survival instinct, otherwise he wouldn't be staying in just his own country). Eventually, things will go one way or another, but until then, it still takes a bit of poking and mocking him to make any sort of progress.

The first word I think of when I hear the name Kim Jong Un is "Evil." He is not funny. But we make fun of him to mock him, to show disrespect, which he may hate the most. He wants to be feared. He is dangerous and a monster, but because he is so sure of his power, we attack him with derision and contempt. It is a different kind of laughter than a joyous reaction to a funny joke. Of course, it is safe for us to mock him from the safety of our country, where he has no power. We have grown up being free, and we take it for granted. We need to listen closely to the testimony of those who have grown up in totalitarian countries. Thank you for your courage in speaking out to educate us. This is what the internet is for.

I can choose to follow any religion or no religion, free from the government telling me what I should worship. I have the right to vote, without worrying about being persecuted for voting for "the wrong person." I have the right to armed defense, even from the government itself. Kim Jung Ah, the reason we treat our Veterans with so much Respect. is the lessons we learned from Vietnam in the 60' and 70's. When those Vets returned home they were treated horribly. They were called baby killers and other things that were very hurtful. They were never welcomed home. This caused a lot of depression because these soldiers did not ask to go. They were forced to go. The war was so unpopular and the people back home blamed them for it. It took over 20 years for the USA to correct that. After we went to the Iraq war, we made sure we welcomed the soldiers home. This is the true basis for thanking military for their service. They all volunteered to join and protect our country. With out their service we would not be as secure in our freedom.

I want to thank Vietnam era vets for leading the charge on ensuring that vets of the modern eras are welcomed home regardless of popular political views.

To Kim Jeong Ah (Korean translation follows) : 김정아에게 (한국어 번역은 다음과 같다) : I can't speak for all Americans, only myself. I can make guesses about others, which I will do. So please keep it in your mind that I will be won't about some things. Only use my reply as a very rough estimate of how Americans think. Because we are all so different, it would be very difficult to say, "Americans are like this. Americans think that." Most of the time freedom is like breathing. For us it is essential to life but we don't have to think about it all the time. It's just there (we just do it). To me freedom means being able to live without fear of the government. Freedom is the ability to say good things or bad things about the government and not have to worry about being put in prison or executed. Freedom is the ability to wake up in the morning and suddenly decide, "I want to go to California for a 2 week holiday." Freedom is the ability to decide what religion I will or will not be. Freedom is the ability to publicly be who I am without worrying about retribution from the government. Freedom means that I can express ideas that are new or different without having to worry about what the government may say or do. Freedom means protection from attacks or assaults from foreign powers or other individuals. Freedom means that if I am attacked or assaulted that the situation will be investigated to the best of abilities and those who perpetrated the attack or assault will be dealt with under the law. Freedom means that The law will be applied to everyone equally, because, "Justice that isn't blind, isn't justice." Freedom means many things to many people and there is no one way to explain what freedom means. Often there are no words to describe what freedom means. It's much like asking someone to describe how love feels. There is no simple answer. I hope that you continue to have freedom in your life and I'm glad you had at least a taste of it. It's my wish that someday everyone will be free; free to pursue their life as they see fit within the bounds of reasonable law. On the topic of freedom, it'd be interesting to have the North Korean veterans react to the command chain/organizational structure of the US military since it really highlights a few important things. Firstly, US troops swear an oath to the constitution (a 200 year old document that protects the rights of US citizens), not the president, not a king or a queen, not a dictator, not a political party. US troops are also held to high moral standards and if they are given an order that would constitute being a crime, they are obligated to disobey it. Additionally, the US military is civilian controlled as the commander in chief is a democratically elected president, the secretary of defense is a civilian appointed by our president (whom we elected), and the power to declare war/determine military budget is determined by the US congress whom are civilians that are directly elected by the people; even if the president is a veteran, when you retire or assume public office, you become a civilian.

From one soldier to another i have so much compassion and a sense of pride for her strength and sacrifice. Although we serve in completely opposite atmospheres i respect not only her sacrifices, but the sacrifices of her people. The whole world has a lot to learn in terms of compassion, empathy, sympathy. Hearing stories of the struggle others face gives me a sense of pride for the liberty and freedom I fight for when I think of my country and i am even more grateful today of my blessings. I cannot begin to imagine what a life of "freedom" in a country that is not America could mean and I respect her even more so for how grateful she is for things all of us take for granted. What a wonderful learning experience this was for me personally. I have been following a number of defector channels and further educating myself of the culture and lifestyle of NK and it is heart breaking to hear the stories of what I have grown to believe is bondage. I do not have the same opinion as this young woman however i think her opinion is valuable. I would give anything to attend a public speaking service from her if she ever returned to the US. Would be an exciting event for many I'm sure.

The California woman’s definition of freedom was dreadful. Her own grandfather fled North Korea to America and she ends up calling us entitled for protesting unconstitutional power grabs. How arrogant and ignorant. As an American, I’m embarrassed. 🐾

Unconstituational has a definition. There is nothing unconstitutional about having people wear masks. For something to be unconstitutional, it has to be forbidden by the Consitution. You just don't like it, but that has nothing to do with the Consitution.
@TheRealVolk
@TheRealVolk 3 жыл бұрын
First of all, this is a distraction from my original point. This woman is a terrible representative about what freedom is all about contrasting to North Korean life. Secondly, the constitution doesn’t grant us our rights. The constitution is the limit to government. There is nothing in the constitution where the government can mandate the wearing of an article of clothing. It doesn’t matter whether you agree with it or not. That’s the law. Now local laws are different, but they can’t violate federal law. And let’s be clear. I’m wearing the mask. I’m fine with wearing the mask. No problem here. But I also understand that when people take power, there is a point at which what was voluntary is no longer voluntary and, as Americans, we need to have an actual conversation about this rather than just shut someone down because you think you know better. It underlines my ‘arrogant American’ comment from earlier. 🐾

It could even be over Zoom. I would love to see her reactions to both. The Kim memes aren’t really meant to be funny in a lighthearted way, but more of a mocking, pee on your enemy from afar way. In their own countries’ the people can not safely do that, so it’s sort of our way of supporting hatred against them. Kim has statues and paintings that the people are forced to revere so we like to taint that image.America went through this with its own founding being under British rule and free speech is our first amendment for a reason with the second backing it up.

I think it’s important to clarify to her that we don’t think of Kim Jong Un as a Humorous figure. In fact I would say 90% of Americans if not all Americans see him as a Modern Hitler and a monster. And idk if maybe the translator there didn’t know how to ask these complicated questions maybe by mistake not fully translating well cause her answers didn’t fully match the question but who knows maybe the American girl knows Korean but can’t speak well yet which is why she spoke English or they asked her to speak it like I said who knows But I really feel it’s important for a North Korean Army Vet to hear this as someone who’s lived in America her whole life. I’ve asked a lot of people in America and online over the years about what they think about North Korean human rights and how do they see Kim Jong Un everyone I spoke to which I would guess about 50-60 people in person and across SNS platforms. They all view him as a pig or modern hitler as I said before or just disgusting in general, a lot of people even called him the devil cause the citizens and the military are in hell while he seems to enjoy it like the devil would and let’s just say a lot of bad words I can’t put on here etc... Educated Americans and the younger generation and my generation so 1990s, 2000s kids especially are passionate about human rights in our country and outside our country freedom to us(I can’t speak for the whole country just the people I’m surrounded by and strangers I see on the internet) is the ability to say anything, be anything, dress anyway we want, go anywhere want, to practice any religion, and that every human being has the equal opportunity to be whatever whoever they want to be, freedom is having a choice and is many other things. Freedom is something our country fights for every day not only for country but for others too we are so blessed to have what we have and nobody should starve or have their human rights abused like this. I remember when we learned about Hitler and about Kim Jong Un and the Kim family at my high school and when I tell you the whole classroom was crying not one kid wasn’t I was so disgusted with what I saw I just could not understand how someone could be so evil. I could go on forever about this it is a long tough subject but us citizens make memes of him to demean him and to make fun of him and mock him and swear at him cause North Koreans can’t and we know he sees the viral ones he tried to stop a movie from coming out in theaters here that was making fun of him. We still posted it online after he threatened our country if they release it. Im sure it pissed him off he knows how the world sees him. But she was right about a lot of things there are quite a bit of people who are ignorant and don’t realize how good they have it very entitled but I think it’s due to them being uneducated or their own unwillingness to be educated which is sad. I pray for the day that North Koreans get to experience the freedoms we have and never have to starve or have their human rights abused ever again and that Korea becomes 1 country again where families can finally be together again. I really loved the video you guys did wonderful on tough subject and excited to see and learn more from you. You both were so cute🥰 again this is just 1 opinion out of many I can’t speak for a whole country cause cultures differ depending on what state you live in and even towns/cities you live in. there are people even in America that don’t get the same opportunity and privilege that others do. Equality is something we are still to this day are trying to fight for within our own country. Again I really loved the video you both were just a joy to watch and so adorable and cute. Thank you for educating us on your experiences in North Korea I look forward to learning more🥰❤️

My way of explaining the memes would be, there's a saying "To find who rules over you, see who you cannot criticize". this attitude is very prevalent in US. US mercilessly mocks even their own president. I don't think the meme's intent is to make whats happening funny and not serious, but to give the middle finger to tyrants. I certainly understand where you are coming from though. There are a lot of people in US ignorant to what goes on in the world, and many of them wouldnt even know who kim jong un is, if it wasnt for the memes. I think people who may not know the context of a meme might investigate it, and see the reality of the situation, so i think the impact overall is good. Im meaning to say more people would be ignorant if it wasnt for the way that meme's spread. almost a type of propaganda.

I wish she would have talked about the freedoms given to us in the Bill of Rights in the Constitution when she talked about freedom in the U.S., except, "we can do whatever we want". The Bill of Rights is the foundation of our freedom, guaranteeing civil rights and liberties to the individual-like freedom of speech, press, and religion. It sets rules for due process of law and reserves all powers not delegated to the Federal Government to the people or the States.

I would just like to say the differences in what we perceive as freedom are altered by our experiences, as Americans we have been raised with so many freedoms that we couldn't explain just one. Some of our freedoms are laid out in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights and some freedoms are fought for or changing or expanding everyday. There are people who have the right to change their name or their sex. We can travel when and where we want. Eat anything we want. Watch anything we want. There are some people in this world that feel they can express themselves how they want and damn the consequences. (This is true for the most part, but it really comes down to respect) Personally I was raised to not be disrespectful, but over the years I have realized that even though I was not intentionally being disrespectful, someone still perceived it as my being rude. Thank you Kim Jung Ah for being such a wonderful human being and for fighting for human rights. You are amazing! ❤❤❤

The reason people aren't afraid of soldiers in the US is that our Constitution states that soldiers can't be used against us. Now police can cause fear in some groups (especially minorities) in the US because those can stop you and detain you and do things to you and you are not allowed to resist, even if they are in the wrong. So "freedom" is subjective. In the US, unless there's a war and a draft is being applied (all those registered and eligible to serve are forced into service) it is usually voluntary to serve in the military. In the US, you can even choose the branch in which you want to serve. You take an entrance exam to determine your skillsets and then you can choose the role you want to play in the military based upon those tests. If you went to college first, then you can enter the military as a commissioned officer and go through the special training for officers and more specialized options. The US has propaganda during school as well, but it isn't about hating other countries, it is more about praising our country as being "the best". Children are told that they are "free", but then we are all taught that we must follow the rules OR ELSE. So in some ways, we aren't as free as we proclaim. For instance, any negative criticism of our leadership (especially the President) that may suggest any violence towards them is immediately met with a "visit" by the NSA (National Security Agency). Please watch the documentary Fahrenheit 911. Due to the Patriot Act, any citizen can be abducted by the government if they are "suspected" of being an "Enemy of the State". This is called Rendition and has been used on innocent people in the past. But it isn't as prevalent as North Korea, because in NK, the whole society has been taken over by the government and there's no one to complain, sue or even protest. That's what is good about the US, we have a right to protest. Our news organizations can still expose government flaws without getting arrested or "disappeared". Even if a group riots, the federal government STILL can't bring in the military unless specifically requested by the Governor of that particular state. Our voting rights are being threatened at the moment thanks to Trump and his GOP lapdogs. This is a scary thing as they are slowly trying to ruin our democracy and lead us a little bit closer to a North Korean style government. Right now, Republicans have control over the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court. Perfect storm and luckily our military won't allow them to take the final step - which is suspend the Constitution and go military rule.

You should ask someone who has no ties to countries outside of the United States. My wife is Korean and has lived in the US since she was 3. The definition of freedom for her is not even close to mine because she has influence from another country. The eagle is a great example of what freedom is. It has no master to serve. It's only limits are the ones it puts on itself. We believe we have unalienable rights that are NOT given to us by our government so they have no right to take them away. Liberty or Death. When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. Eagles don't like to be controlled.

Kim Jung Ah has a very deep question about freedom, which I wish had gotten answered! She's more than twenty years older than the American she's asking the question of, and in life experience there is an even wider gap. I think she could learn many interesting things about Americans from this interchange, but not much about the American idea of freedom. For that, she should talk to an American who is closer to her own age or life experience, or has served the country in some civic or military way, as Kim Jung Ah has in North Korea. This young woman is obviously a very sweet, genuine person, but the answer she gives is not at all what most Americans' idea of freedom is: it is the sort of answer that I would expect from a 13-year-old American whose parents never included her in conversation about politics, economics, philosophy, or religion, than from a 23-year-old. I'm guessing that partly she was taken by surprise by the question, and has never had to explain it, so that might explain her silly answer: it's hard to be asked deep questions when you're young, nervous to be on camera, and are trying to make yourself agreeable to a stranger. However, American schools have also deteriorated in the last couple of decades, so it's true that there are more young people who sound as fatuous as she does here than there were 15 years ago when I entered college. I'm a decade older than she is, and I've seen a major dumbing down in that time: what kids are expected to know when entering college now is what we were expected to know entering high school. So the opinion she gives here, if it's what she really thinks, is more representative of a growing and worrisome problem in American society, rather than being representative of American ideas of freedom in general. However, even considering the shift in culture and education, there are still plenty of 23-yr-olds who would have given a much better answer than this. To give her credit, I bet that if she gave the matter more thought over a few days, she would come up with a much better answer. It's startling to me that she would be 23 and, as an American who has been able to vote for five years, still not have thought deeply about what freedom means, but that doesn't mean she's incapable of doing so.

She asked me what she had to do to visit her sister in Chicago. I showed her a map of the driving distance and flight schedules and costs if she choose to fly. She said no she mean what government agency did she have to get permission to travel, how long was she allowed to stay and how long would it take to get a response. I never even considered that as a concern. It took me a long time to convince her she was free to travel anywhere, no one cared.

In USA, when a person is a Native American, it usually refer that they are of an indigenous tribe, a person that had ancestors here before Europeans arrived. Interestingly, many in USA will think of themselves as Native American if they have a small percentage of their ancestors were indigenous.

Canadian here, my heart breaks for those in North Korea... I hope that in my life time we can see them free from their oppressors. What can I do to help besides spread awareness?

Honestly I’d like her to meet an actual Native American person. Or even I’d just like to know what she was taught about Native American/Indigenous race people. Do North Koreans even know we exist? I’m really curious.

Freedom to me is Choice. The choice to decide the fate of your own life. To believe or not, to love or hate, to grow or wither, to think or follow. You have the choice to make yourself into whatever you dream if you work for it and want it bad enough. Liberty and Justice. Justice is supposed to served when those who unlawfully attempt to halt you in the pursuit of your god given dreams. To all of the men and women who serve this nation “willingly”, we cherish and love them all for it. They protect that right to live these dreams while they sacrafice there lives for us to do so. The most noble thing is a person willing to sacrafice themselves to protect someone they may never meet. Honor and Respect. Bless your heart and Im heartbroken you never received a proper birthday present. Virtual hug on your next birthday.

It didn't surprise me how similar the North Korean dictatorship is with the Portuguese dictatorship that fell in 1974. History repeats itself, I guess. I have as much respect for this lady as I do for my grandparents that lived during that time.

Elementary through high school we were taught about NK and SK in depth at least in my school district. Even in my college history class we talk about everything in detail and even had to write a 10 page paper on our topic of choice. I choose the NK point of view of the war and I'm thankful that professor's do stuff like this because it's very important to know

I love this video and I’m glad that we’re starting to move a little bit away from all of the military aspects. I understand it’s probably interesting to them having served formally but there’s so much more to the world and western culture than the American military.
