Together with Bats, they form the Nakh branch of the Northeast Caucasian languages family.
As of 2002 census the Chechen language has 1,330,000 speakers while Ingush has 413,000 speakers.

The bad thing is that even some non-Russian researchers use the wording “waynah” as ethnonym, which is not acceptable, cause it was introduced as ethnonym only in 20st century as a part of Russian-Soviet propaganda against ancient people of Ingushetia (Galgai). The wording “waynah” itself is ancient as Ingush language is, but in its linguistic sense and linguistic sense only, as it means “our people” and nothing else. But Ingush people never used it as ethnonym. This wording “waynah” can be translated in English as compatriot. British and US people use the word “compatriot” referring to each other. But nobody in this world, I guess, claim that the word “compatriot” is the British people’s self name or any other kind of ethnonym, right? It would be nonsense if any tries. In nowadays Russian propaganda insist on using “waynah” instead Galgai (Ingush) to make everything related to Galgai people disappear.
