The house one is weird, dude needs to be asking the question of if he wants to be with her for life. If you are married/in a relationship and buying a house you are a united team. When she is pregnant and is on maternity is she going to say “nah babe you don’t have to manage the costs while I’m out of action we both have to maintain separate finances.” What about years down the line and they get inheritance? Is that going to be completely separate from each other? It just doesn’t seem like they can work as a team.
@justanotherwitposter1875

My thoughts as well, you're going into a partnership, not an individualship. Maybe he should get married to the parents, seeing as how they're better at contributing to their relationship than the fiancee is. What kind of selfish person gets money from their parents as a gift to help pay the down payment on a house that they're trying to buy with their future husband/wife, and says "Great, now I get to keep my half of the payment in my savings and I get a little extra on top for myself." That's not her contribution, that's her parents'. If they didn't give the money, was she still not going to pay anyway? Way I see it, they should have split the rest of the payment between them, or done what NL said and used it to make a bigger down payment for a smaller principle on the loan.

Knowing what I know now about fat phobia in the modern world, the question “do you think I’m fat?” is such a loaded question. Like, you obviously care whether or not you’re fat, which is why you’re asking, and you obviously think one if preferable, or else you wouldn’t ask. Taking the default “oh no you’re not fat” stance does a lot to harm people’s perception of fat people, like it’s taboo or wrong to be fat. It’s a non starter question and personally, if somebody asked me, I would just turn 360 degrees and moonwalk away

yeah. the fat thing is difficult. I've been in relationships with bigger girls on occasion. and you'd need an infinite amount of 'body positivity' to not hear 'you're fat' without a kneejerk 'insulted' reaction occuring. on that note, if he really wanted to not lie, but also soften the blow, a) the preface doesn;t help. at all. just say the thing you're going to say. It's like bring your child into a room and starting with "just to be clear, we both still love you and nothing that we might be about to say will ever change that, okay?" it's just not helping. b) fatphobia in mind, no one is happy about bing a 'fat person'. if you have to ackneledge excess body fat, you do it in a way that's compartmentalized. There is a person, and then maybe they have a few extra pounds on them. it allows for the idea that the extra weight is something that's not intrinsically a part of them. and the word fat by itself is best avoided entirely. use chubby. call it a muffin top. says something about being 'medium-thicc'. 'could stand to lose a few pounds.' but yeah, not being asked the question in the first place is the best.

I also have a thing with knives and I totally get being afraid of sharp knives but not dull ones. Like, you have to use knives to cook, so you get used to them in some capacity, but when you hear that a knife is so sharp that it requires special care, there's a part of you that just can't help but vividly imagine what accidentally cutting yourself with it would be like whenever you look at it. Ironically, sharp knives are actually safer, since they need less force and stay on the same plane more easily.

OP in the “do you think I’m fat” post is, to me, a good example of intelligence vs. wisdom. OP technically did the right thing by asking if the person wanted an honest opinion and also made the disclaimer about not valuing them differently. On paper, it might seem tactful, but wisdom is about being emotionally intelligent enough to realize that it’s just not worth it to hurt someone over something so meaningless.
@jstache93
@jstache93 Жыл бұрын
I'd like to preface this by saying that it in no way affects how I view OP as a person. I don't think that neurodivergence is a good measure of who someone is. That being said, OP is a little autistic.

Yes, you put into words what I thought about it. It's not a sign of emotional intelligence to be "radically honest", even when it's technically true. Maybe the girlfriend shouldn't have asked, but everyone has a moment of weakness and the need for reassurance. She could be just vulnerable that moment so she asked her bf and the OP. And plus, she wasn't even that fat (according to the OP). I assume she was 5-7 kilos above her healthy weight. In that case, a little bit of lie would be a sign of true emotional intelligence.

@@cartoonhanks1708 we won't agree because it's the matter of personal morals. But the way I see it, the girl was barely above the normal BMI. It's not like she was 150 kilos and then asked that question. So a little lie is way more humane than being "radically honest". If the OP would show just *a little bit* of empathy, he wouldn't even have to go on Reddit to seek validation. Also I am 99.9% sure that if his boss asks why he is late or didn't finish the project, he wouldn't say "Oh sorry, just didn't feel like it". That dude calling the girlfriend "a little bit fat" really just said the worst things possible lmao. He already states he doesn't find her fat but only a little chubby, okay so you DON'T think she's fat but still thought it necessary to say "a little bit yes"? Starting with "do you want my honest opinion?" is already a horrible decision to start.

the problem with 'honesty is a categorical imperative' people is that they care more about some self-indulgent predilection towards enforcing their supreme moral supremacy they can feel good about, and less about whatever self-proclaimed intention to help the other person with their 'honesty'. like seriously, if you want to be some paragon of honesty at least learn how to be good at it. if you have to say yes to the "am i fat" question you can exercise some tact and be like, "a little chubby maybe, but its not that bad... if it bothers you, you could do something about it and if not well it's not really something worth worrying about anyway" especially if they're not like, morbidly obese or something in which case just give them a look that says "really?" because we both know what game we're playing the path of least resistance is to just say nah or no so i don't begrudge anyone for doing that but if you really want to be honest just be nonchalant about it while affirming the other person's self value without needing some psycho preamble, just say it in a way that they know that whatever they're anxious about isn't really that big a deal (at least in this case)

I disagree with the take at 54:26. To me - admitidly not 16 - there are 2 pretty good options. 1) You hand wash the dishes that didnt clean in the dishwasher and then put them away. And look, i know it isnt your job to do it but i imagine the initiative would be appreciated. In the instance that isnt an option then 2) Ask your mom what she wants you to do with the dishes that come out dirty. When she confronted you the first time ask for advice. Sure i don't think she did anything wrong*, but she did do the bare minimum (which was her mom had a problem with). * That said, "'I kindly said, i was putting away the dishes" is taking the piss.

About the nudist girl. Why did he say it mattered what the people in the room decided and then called her an asshole for something that explicitly was decided by someone who was not in the room. It's like if my boyfriend hanged out with a smoker and was ok with the smoke but then I told the smoker he can't do it around my boyfriend when I'm not around? It's not the same thing like I get the insecurity from the girl and I also think how op talked about it was kinda weird like bringing up their relative attractiveness level was just unecessary but I don't really think she's in the wrong in the parameters NL gave (nor that commenter who called her the asshole, the roommate didnt have an issue with it, its explicity the gf who doesnt live there).

Here I was thinking the whole point of getting married was combining the finances/time/effort of two people who love each other in order to make their lives easier. What's the point of getting married if you're gonna treat your spouse like a stranger you have no financial ties to. If money from one of your parents is given to buy a house that's the couples money. Not to mention, why do they have separate savings accounts anyways.

I feel like with the knives she could take an old opaque tupperware and put them underneath that in the side sink or somewhere, but I think in the moment she is (subconsciously at least) taking the route that will cause the most friction bc it was so jarring to her that she feels like this is the only way to get across the knives need to be cleaned sooner.

It likely comes from the fact that me and my spouse handle our finances in a wholistic way but I think separating finances in marriage is so strange. It's almost like you're approaching a life partnership from the perspective of being personally and separately prepared for the worst. It seems really good for guaranteeing an equal split (which is good). It seems really good at avoiding worst case scenarios. I just really trust my spouse not to put me in a situation where I have to worry about either thing. Do what you want obviously, just never really seemed like the way I wanted to approach things.

same. just sharing, me and my spouse is the embodiment of opposites attracts -- when it comes to financial decision it could really cause state-level argument that really made us question each other's ideology and life choices, but ultimately we want the same goal, just different means. healthy productive discussion is the key here to keep each other's agency while achieving the shared goal.

If you are getting married and buying a house together, there should be no such thing as "her money" and "his money." The idea that people getting married split their expenses and payments is nonsense. Marriage is combining all of your assets into one pool and living as one entity, end of. Anything else is not a marriage, it's a roommate situation.
