Just what I thought. However, the 24/7 availbility-demanding mindset started almost immediately as phones became common. I remember when movie theatures starting asking people to turn off their phones the justification I heard the most for people keeping them on was "what if there's an emergency?" In a true emergency, there are people better prepared to deal with it than the person with the silent phone. By "emergency" they mean "inconvience". It is okay to be off the grid for a few hours. Hell, I've even got relatives who don't even turn their phones on unless they want to be the ones to initiate a call.

It was really telling that its a high school friendship, friend went off to better herself, found a job/life outside of OP, OP negs her and just shits on all her choices. I don't think they were actually good friends, just friends by convenience. Once the nostalgia of high school wore off, the friend realized its just crabs in a bucket with OP and cut bait. Specifically, she didn't even care enough about her friend to just be happy for her, and couldn't even remember the details of her friends actual job. edit: changed some things for clarity.
@yoyobeerman1289

@@soren_hero247 I mean sure, probably don't be an asshole about what someone chose to pursue. I don't see that attitude being any different then when someone decides to lecture a woman for choosing to be a homemaker instead of a girl-boss. It's a very unhealthy attitude. That being said I do think it's important to be cognizant that a lot of graduate (and even some pre-grad) degrees are professionally DOA or have very niche and hard to find applications and a lot of people get duped into getting expensive and time consuming degrees they don't need because of culture pressure.
@soren_hero247
@soren_hero247 Жыл бұрын
@@yoyobeerman1289 Edited to be more precise in my language. 1. Not shitting on OP's choices. Just her treatment of her friend. My inference was that OP believes her own choices of family are more valued/desired/etc than her friends. I removed the barefoot remark, because I can't read OP's mind about whether she explicitly believes it. However you must agree that OP thinks her friend should've made similar choices to herself, right? Clearly OP made a value judgement about her own choices and holds her friend to this same standard. Additionally, OP clearly compares her own husband's salary against her friends entry level job in the EU parliament as some kind of translator (which needing advanced training in a language you might not natively speak/understand might actually be helpful). What inference would you draw? That OP is a feminist who believes her friend should be free to make her own choices? Or that maybe OP believes her friend should've given up on college, gotten married and had kids? 2. Your argument about graduate degrees doesn't seem to address anything about the actual situation. Yes, some degrees are less job/economy focused, so what? The friend was talking about her NEW JOB! No mention of cultural pressure, or the degree being expensive, or very niche (translators are needed all over the world). Time consuming? 26 years old, means 4 years for her bachelor's degree, maybe 2 years for her master's degree, and that puts her at about 24/5. Which gives her about a year to apply for jobs, interview, and accept a job. Seems she is doing things on a pretty stable timeline.

If I'm understanding the "making my younger sisters fly home" post, OP's sisters came over on a break from school, overheard that OP's husband was meeting a client for dinner (who happened to be a woman) and the sisters assumed he must be cheating and followed him to the restaurant to take pictures and try to prove he was cheating. It's understandable to be upset by that, it's definitely crossing a trust/privacy boundary, but telling the sisters to leave immediately, especially in the middle of the night, is overreacting. It really would've been a lot better for OP to sit down with her sisters and say "Please don't stalk my husband while he's at work. I trust him and I don't think he's cheating on me, and it's wrong for you to follow him around like this. If I catch you doing this again, I'll going to call our parents and tell them I'm sending you home early" or something like that.

@@JordanIdk 'yeah, I was worried this kid might have his father die, and then he might need to be raised or something, so I'll just pretend he doesn't exist.' +1 on 'still sociopathy.' you actually need zero empathy for this thought process to formulate into actual actions and choices. then again, the frontal lobe doesn't fully develop till 25, so maybe that's a point in favor of the OP's theory.

With the skipping lunch to pick up the nephew thing... sounds perfect, now grandma and aunt can pick up the kid and take kid to lunch, as a family. Missed opportunity to do good. Also an example of why grandma sucks. If I had a kid, who was refusing to pick up their nephew from school, I would smack them in the back of the head. You pick that kid up, and you take care of them, period.

The other day there was a thread where someone was talking about his brother who wouldn’t stop pissing on the floor no matter how many punishments they gave him and how severe they were. Many people’s advice were horribly cruel punishments like publicly embarrassing him, putting stuff in his bed, grounding him for months, etc. And not one person had suggested therapy for the kid to help him through whatever problem he was clearly going through. People on Reddit scare me sometimes.

"IF I had a spouse" sums it up. These are people who never even talk to women IRL, let alone leave their computer desk for any other reason than to use the bathroom or to grab more tendies, judging someone they don't know who might not even be real over a situation they'll never be in because they have disengaged entirely from the real world. Also known as, The Reddit Classic.

Those NTA replies on the last post are crazy. Putting all the blame on the husband for.. sleeping. Also bringing up it's dangerous for a woman being out at night; while that can be true, it's her job, he shouldn't be in constant panic mode every day she's working at night. He's allowed to sleep. Like Ryan said, just talk about it next day "yo, maybe try to keep your phone out of silent mode for me only in case of emergencies"

that forth post seriously made me loose my mind. If you‘re talking to anyone about their future life and what they‘ve built for themselves, shouldn’t their happiness be the metric of success? Op obviously never once considered what her friends goal was when she started and continued her career path. If she‘s gonna do translation work for the EU parliament and that’s what she wants to be doing, that’s seriously so freaking cool. OP either has zero imagination and is unable to understand how people can find happiness in any other way than she did, or she‘s hella jelly.
