This is how the Norwegian air ambulance operates. Instead of landing in the road, why not just balance the helicopter on the tiny fence.. NORWEGIAN AIR AMBULANCE - BALANCING ON GUARD RAIL

@@wannabetowasabe As an FPV drones operator, I have had the slightest taste of flying and multi-tasking, of course a multicopter is different from a main rotor, tail rotor copter, but drone racing and freestyle is already very demanding to do well.
@wannabetowasabe
@wannabetowasabe 3 жыл бұрын
@@jays_jae I now follow you after having to Goggle "FPV." I've been under the impression that all drones give the operator a live camera view, otherwise how is terrain, vegetation and landing back where the operator is standing (sitting, hanging, lying down what have you) possible? A suggestion, don't assume people know the lingo (especially abbreviations) of any endeavor. It's like physicians saying "your EKG came back showing QRS complexes and no P waves. I'm concerned and would prefer to in-patient you, just to be safe." You then have to ask "doctor, can you give me that in English?" I am a forester by education and profession. If I were to say, "the DBH of the understory is on the large size, and my guess without a bore, is that it has reached the culmination of MAI, but unfortunately the size class is precommercial so ladder mitigation is going to be force account" you would tell me to explain that in English also.
@wannabetowasabe
@wannabetowasabe 3 жыл бұрын
@@jays_jae Also, I would think drone operating/flying would be difficult. Pilots often are reacting to the feel of the seat of their pants to detect what an aircraft is doing. That is absent with remote controlled aircraft. I've watched some model aircraft flying standing next to the operator, doing all sorts of maneuvers that I've seen full sized aircraft do, like rolls, loop de loops and hammerheads with just two levers and speed control on a handheld panel. This for a model airplane that they have spent thousands of dollars on and a year or more building. Side note, I was a passenger on a biplane once, when the pilot surprised my friend and I with a hammerhead maneuver. The horizon does some amazing things during this stunt!

Helicopter pilots are a breed apart. I crewed on a twin-Huey as a student in the 70s. Our mission was to transport supplies from the nearest road access (delivered by truck) to the light house offshore. As we touched down near the light house I could tell we were still under power. The pilot says, "Use the right door only!" The right side skid was on a partially broken away concrete pad; the left one was in the air!

Few, I mean very few helio pilots have this level of skills. Come to think of it fewer than few would be closer to reality. While doing extensive geographical land surveying a few years back we were fortunate to have such a pilot of this level. He often placed the end of a skid on something while we got out then removed our gear and off he went to land somewhere suitable. An amazing pilot and person !
@nvstewart
@nvstewart 3 жыл бұрын
Why would this be a highly skilled move? A helicopter in a hover is very unbalanced by nature, the pilot is always manipulating the controls to remain balanced. It is very similar to balancing yourself on top of a ball. The ball in this case is the column of air underneath of the helicopter caused by the rotors. This maneuver in this video is no different, except that he doesn't need to balance the helicopter on the lateral axis because the skids on the guard rail are providing that stability. He does however still needs to balance the helicopter in both the longitudinal and yaw axis. So this will actually make it slightly easier for the pilot than actually hovering, 1 less axis to worry about. It is just a normal hover with a bit of 'bling' thrown in.

@nvstewart
@nvstewart 3 жыл бұрын
@@palco22 Never said it was easy... He is an emergency helicopter pilot, he is required to hover very precisely and so will have a lot of hover training, for HIM, this is no more difficult than a traditional hover.
@cgi2002
@cgi2002 3 жыл бұрын
@@nvstewart for this pilot, its likely something they have been trained to do and have practiced doing. For most pilots its a flat out, no go. While its seems easier to hover in this situation in theory, in practice its not, the pilot has to now we aware of not getting their skids caught on anything, the clearance of their blades. They must make sure to not over correct even slightly (can't risk the skids moving forwards/backwards at all, may get caught). Basically you need to preform a perfect hover but at very low altitude, which can have unusual wind buffetting effects because of the land under you. Basically its stupidly hard to do, even if your a pro trained to do it, but at the same time, its a practiced manuver so you know what to expect. It's alot like learning to land a helicopter on a ship thats still moving at speed, hard to do, but with practice and training, repeatedly doable.

I’m in mandatory isolation as I have COVID and this is what gets recommended? Makes me feel so unaccomplished. Nice landing though. Remember to wear your mask peeps.
