I absolutely loved this- the second watch leaves you realizing and picking up on so much more. Cooper and Gabrielle did amazing on this! If you want an explanation of the ending as I see it, which could or could not be the intention and direction of the film, I'll explain. Don't keep reading if you don't want spoilers :) ~ ~ ~ Basically, I perceive it as follows- the ex never existed. Jack was jealous about Rachel's involvement, however brief, normal, and platonic, with this other guy at the show. When he pulls over, the ex isn't really behind them in his own car. In the wide shot of their car traveling, the ex's car doesn't appear until Jack starts to get possessive. Notice when they're talking to the ex, both the ex and Jack share the mannerism of knowing exactly how long they had been with Rachel. Jack's brain is either spinning him a new story wherein he is not the bad guy, nor the reason that Rachel is dead, or he was actively hallucinating during the murder, but I'm leaning towards the first option. He would've then killed Rachel, and you only see him dragging one body. This seems like a cinematography choice, but in the context of the ex never existing, there would only be one to drag away regardless. His brain likely buries the trauma of this event, which is initially perceived by the viewers as amnesia from the ex- who we now know (in theory) does not exist- causing blunt force trauma to his head. He begins to get increasingly paranoid and confused as he begins to remember little things, and realizing that they didn't play out how we had seen, and that he was not the hero- in fact he is the main antagonist to this story, to Rachel and her untimely end, and ultimately, to himself. This is something that I think that he comes to terms with in the ending shot when he is presumably looking at Rachel's body in some form. He doesn't believe it at first, once again trying to think of a way in which it wasn't his fault, when he begins to realize that he was the villain. In the end, you can tell that he has accepted his fate, succumbing to a psychosis that had previously shown as jealousy and presumably envy. I believe that he would've seriously ruined his life after that, whether intentionally or accidentally, but wouldn't care. He is now a completely different person than who we had seen throughout the film, even when we see the events as they truly happened.

Thank you for explaining. it was so creepy (well done) I had to stop a few times and not look too closely. You basically just described a borderline episode where someone is so overcome with their own emotions that they disassociate and have delusions including vengeance..they feel like the victim but do not realize they are harming others..it is highly prevalent in domestic violence and the second most serious in terms of serious harm. omg this is scary. Don't think I can watch it again but wow. Will just re watch the car scene. great analysis thanks!

I recently discovered cooper, I hadn't knwon him from tiktok or anything, and he came up on my reccs on youtube. I watched the video and instantly started watching more. Cooper is so funny, and has such similar humor to me, and so I have been watching all of his videos. What I found out a few days ago was that he was a film student. I'm 17 and I plan on going to college for film and TV. This short film was s cool, and so well done. The way coopers facial expression changed at the end was so smooth, and natural, it takes so long so master something like that. The other people in this short were amazing as well, I think that college films like this are one of my favorite things to watch and I think it deserves everything that it got. I'm glad that I can have this little gem that has less than 25k views to myself, so that when I show it to others, it'll be something new to them, and not something they've seen. This inspires me so much to continue my passion in film and hopefully make it my living. the psychology of this film is outstanding, and the work that went into it with how little people worked on it. It's beautiful and I can't wait to share it with others :)

I read through and could relate with the similar humor to cooper and how I discovered his content from some recommendation on youtube. this short film is a hidden gem and I agree the acting was generally good. once again, and mainly, good luck w school :) and I’m sure you’ll do great overall taking inspiration from any and everything that inspires you

as a film graduate from GSU and as someone who is currently working in the industry.... do NOT put yourself in debt going to school. Get on as a PA and be personable and professional and you will learn 3000% more, actually working than you will at school. If I could tell past me one thing: this would be it. I wish you all the best in your creative indevours, regardless of what path you choose! :) But seriously networking on sets and at local film gatherings in your city will put you miles ahead of those (aka me and others like me, who went the school route) and wasted thousands of dollars to get the fancy degree. Most people in the industry don't have one. I convinced myself when I was 17 ( currently 25) that I needed a degree if I wanted people to take my craft seriously and tbFh it's done the opposite. Whenever my degree is brought up it's a point of jest and I personally feel my decision-making is brought into question by those within the industry.. Hope this finds you well!!! I can tell you have a passion for cinema, don't let that fire go out!!!

Oh yeah I think the "ex" is another personality of his. Maybe he suffers from multiple personality disorder. Could also suffer from Schizophrenia, or some other mental illness. We see in the beginning how possessive he is over her when he starts getting upset by her chatting with a guy at that gathering.

This is so awesome. I love how real the dialogue is, like it has little pauses and breaks and moments that make it feel dramatic but not in a showy, acting kind of way. The same goes for the facial expressions, they are not over done to an extent where they feel exaggerated or fake, they feel genuine. A truly fantastic short film!

this film feels like a modern spin on The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe (I won’t spoil but there are some v significant story beats that would be in the center of a vent diagram of this film and that story.) special shout-out to the sound design! The bumping of the road while jack & rachel are arguing sounded like heartbeats(& with the Poe lens- this choice can read as a nod to the story & possible foreshadowing.) Really well done & super spooky. The face shift in the last frame is also so haunting omg. Everyone did an amazing job!!! 🌹🌹🌹

I love these kinds of short films (though I wish it was full-length) because I don't know enough to know who to root for. In the beginning, I'm all for Cooper's character's side and despised the ex in the brief time we had with him. On re-watch, I still don't like the ex but also don't like Cooper's character much either. Still lowkey confused about the plot but that, too, is why I like it.

I wish this was all in his mind, the crazy ex, the detective. I think jack was jealous that Rachel was talking to the other guy at the gala. He imagined he got rear ended, you can’t see a car in the rear view mirror when the get in the ‘crash’. He knows the amount of time him and Rachel have been dating, down to the day, and uses that to feel superior when Sam is talking about how long he was with Rachel. The only reason both of them say the exact number of days is because Jack is imagining this entire interaction. He imagines that Sam is there and is harassing Rachel . He blacks out and as he comes to he picks up a gun and goes to find Rachel who is in the field. In his mind Sam is attacking Rachel physically, punching her etc. but when we wee him laying down after shooting, Sam is far away from them. He shoots rachel because he thought there was someone else there, he thought he was protecting her. But then he realized he shot the ‘wrong’ person, he shoots ‘Sam’ too. We only see Jack drag away one body in the flash back sequence , though that could be a cinematic decision, it would’ve been easy to shoot two shots of him carrying out both bodies. He wakes up at home and imagines this detective who takes him back to the scene of the crime. He slowly remembers what happened and what he did. The detective says “you did this to protects US” symbolizing that they are the same person. Why would he be protecting a random detective he has never seen before. He doesn’t remember anything when the detective shows up. The detective is representing the ‘logical’ part of his memory. Having him dig into his memory to remember everything that happened that night. The part of his brain that is suppressing this event is represented by jack and the logical portion is represented by the detective
