The tax situation has been getting worse since the 1980s. It shifted grocery stores out of poor communities. Parking became a nightmare in the mid 90s. Money was still coming in, so they taxed rentals and businesses more in the early 2000s, damaging outside consumer purchases. In the past decade, they began to tax payrolls. They tax businesses that aren't even located in Portland just for the privilege to conduct businesses within city limits. I love Portland, the food, the trade shows, Christmas ships, The Theater. Unfortunately, I don't love it enough and haven't given them patronage for four years, and I live 20 minutes away. Lawlesness, filthy streets and graffiti. These are just the ramifications of the financial greed of local government. Now, they will not recover financially as tax revenues dwindle, and they will never tighten their belts. I won't give them 2 cents in support of their sickness.
@Spyrit2011
@Spyrit2011 Жыл бұрын
I would advise you to look up taxation on large corporations, as they shift the tax burden from corporations to small businesses and it's people.
@philjohnson3217
@philjohnson3217 Жыл бұрын
@Spyrit2011 Your dwelling on what you are told about in regards to large corporations' income tax revenue and not looking at their true numbers. Intel Corp is one of Oregon's largest employers. They no longer have any locations in Portland, so they are not part of Portland's tax base. Intel paid 1.8 billion in business income taxes in 2021. Intel pays Washington County, Oregon, 20 million a year in real estate taxes. Intel's Oregon payroll is about 1.8 billion, so they are paying a business payroll tax equivelent to what each employee pays for their individual incomes. Liberal media will say Intel doesn't pay taxes, and yes, they get steep discounts in real estate and local taxes in return for commitments to fund programs, hire specified quantities of local employees, etc. Did you know small businesses can gain access to these programs as well. It requires a strong business plan, but you can get access to real-estate deductions, low interest loans, grants, etc. I suggest you stop being a blind victim and invest in studying your local policies. Talk to businesses, talk to people, and look up and/or invest in local companies. You may find that the loss of a city is more influenced by local government spending in an inefficient manner than the businesses that they tend to blame for being greedy.
@Spyrit2011
@Spyrit2011 Жыл бұрын
@@philjohnson3217 Intel is automated. So that point is not relevant. I live in NY we have different policies for small business, like a new small business that starts up within 10 miles of a college or university pays no state tax for the first ten years, and there's not alot hoops to jump though, however NYC and Yonkers has a city tax, upstate NY does not have. You don't even know wth communism is, it is STATELESS, no government read the manifesto. Socialism is workers owning the means of production. Progressives are state capitalism and capitalism is private capitalism. I am anti-capitalist, both state and private capitalism are STILL capitalism. Did you know about this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qpuRrMpkzcjMn4E.html ? You support being ripped off. (btw the actual source of reference is in Modern money mechanics put out by the FEDERAL RESERVE. I also bet you didn't even bother to look up what Liberalism actually is, maybe take 2 seconds of your life and look it up in a dictionary. Corporations get away with not paying taxes and put the tax burden on small business and the people. Both federal and state levels. Do you know why the French revolution actually happened? The nobles didn't pay taxes.
@philjohnson3217
@philjohnson3217 Жыл бұрын
@Spyrit2011 I'm going to try to use love as I digest the multi paths of discussion that you have presented. Intel, although having automation in manufacturing, has 22,000 employees in Oregon. Of those 22,000, very few are in any of the fabs that you may consider automated. Actually, I took Russian in high school and continued my interests in college, which included government structures. Communism Vs. A Democratic Republic, Vs. Monarchy Vs. Dictatorship Vs. All the countries that have any combination of the above. It is fascinating to me how governments operate and how each one has strengths as well as weaknesses. As far as a countries economic structure. The USA is what some may say a full-blown, all in Capatalist economy. It is what it is. It won't be changing. Most of us appreciate it. It most certainly requires oversite and regulation, but that is true for socialism as well. I've actually watched this video several times. The last time I watched it, I cut it off at 4:27 as that is where it started when I clicked on your link. Lol. Thought that was interesting. I've had many discussions with my elders growing up, business men and women and economists. I have always looked poorly on government overspending. Government waist is even worse. These actions devalue the dollar as, like the video explains, the government just prints more money. The bad thing to me and possibly a good thing to you is that eventually the value of the dollar becomes so low, not only will US citizens lose faith in the dollar, but foreign economies will as well. In short, I say tighten up spending even though I know that won't happen, and I believe you are saying it is coming. Change the system before it does. Either way, neither of us should hold our breath. As gor businesses that don't pay taxes. I've had these arguments before. I've looked up the financials of every company that people have argued against and have found they all pay significant taxes. In the interest of continuing dialog, I would like you to name one company that you believe does not pay taxes, and I will offer to research it and discuss it at a later time.

I used to love going to Portland even though I didn't see eye to eye with alot of the politics.. but risking safety isn't worth it. At a certain point, compassion becomes enabling. Individual, business and property taxes are to high for the doers, so the non doers can continue to never contribute anything to society. Lifelong takers will never become givers under the current system. I don’t know about right track, wrong track, but just having some resources made it an easy decision to leave Portland. Sold my house in S.E. and was able to take that money and buy 215 acres, built a new home and shop in an area where criminals are arrested and locked up. Portland is going to be Detroit as anyone who can leave, eventually probably will, including more businesses. Only the government class will be left. More money through taxes will not be able to fix this. You just lose more individuals and businesses who finally realize they are not getting anything for the taxes they pay.

I'm guessing that guy doesn't live in Portland and have to deal with the realities he is commenting on so boldly. I absolutely loved living in Portland but, yeah, after the last few years I could definitely have some words and hate on her. This city has so much potential but it's mismanaged to the point of regression. Seems like everyone is scared to discuss another reality that gave Portland a bad name, destroyed downtown and gave birth to the violent mobs going around vandalizing storefronts and smashing food carts-the protests of 2020. That has seriously contributed to businesses leaving and downtown looking like an abandoned wasteland in some places. Regardless of whether they were useful or not, the media coverage of those incidents scared people away from this city and we need to address it. We need some good 'Travel Oregon' videos or something, not just videos of people with bats, homelessness and stuff burning everywhere. Oregon does have great things about it and we should do a better job of highlighting those positives and giving people incentives to come here.

Will business owners return to the city if the current politicians are in power?
@max420thc
@max420thc Жыл бұрын
Businesses will never return even if you elect completely hood politicians because they know that can turn on a dime as soon as next elections fraud happens. To big of a risk, it’s not the progressive democrats to blame. It’s their voters and no way of getting around them if your a business owner. Best to move and never return.

I'm 58, 3rd generation Oregonian/Portlandian from a large, conservative logging/heavy equipment family with many past businesses & all of my meaningful ancestors are buried there. It was very hard to leave but I watched all my friends sell their businesses & homes and move to other more stable, conservative states in '20. In '21, I finally sold my business and 5 properties and moved 2500 miles away to the peace of mind of common sense & traditional family values where crime is minimal & accounted for, zero looting/violent rioting and there are NO homeless/drug camps to be found. Portland has declined so far that I will NEVER return, not even to visit. It has become the literal embodiment of the vulgar vernacular moniker "sh*thole" and I lived and spent time in Portland and all the recreational areas, including having a home on the Northern coast & loved just about everything about it since 1964. It will NEVER recover bc of Anti-American billionaire factions and their installed ultra-leftist puppets into local politics who are pandering to a minuscule portion of the population instead of those of us who actually finance the whole operation. Basically, the same can be said about the entire West Coast as hundreds of my friends, family members & colleagues up and down the coast have all sold and moved away for the same reasons in the last 4 years. NO one is going back.

You call this “straight talk”? Every turn, you smooth over the obvious, the progressive permissive policy towards crime. Perfectly reflecting the attitude of the Portland mayor. Smiling and popping big words such as “facilitate interagency communication”, “mobilize community resources”. There is no urgency. Everyone seems not worried at all. On the contrary, every leaving business means years of hard working being wasted, gains down the drain.

Inaction is an action, the city government have spoken through their lack of action and support of safe streets by trying to be the criminals friend and blaming the police. Not all homeless people commit crime and not all police are power hungry egomaniacs. But you know what you don’t see, the return on investment with the taxes paid through income and property to justify reelection of officials that are paid a healthy wage to allow such unsatisfactory results to the community. Yet incentivize votes through proposed payments of $1000 monthly. This idea at its core could help those on the edge but will in the long run discourage them to take advantage of opportunities do to the fact they would then not qualify for that money. In a perfect world this could work, but we’re far from that and it would be better spend elsewhere. If a building is starting to fall do you spend all the money to stop the fall or allow the fall and build a better structure thereafter?

We feel the weight of the taxes and are disenfranchised in how the taxes are used, when our streets are dirty and our homes are overpriced compared to wages. Something has to give, wages have to go up so people can afford to live and spend here, or the home prices have to come down so again we can afford to live and spend here. Right now we are barely holding on to being able to just live here.
