CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Betty (Sally Field) is horrified when Moody (Alfred Molina) tells her that they are going to stay, and live, in Iran.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this docudrama based on true events, a mid-'80s Michigan housewife finds her life turned upside down when a vacation to Tehran with her Iranian husband turns into virtual imprisonment for her and her young daughter. Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) is reluctant to visit the wartorn homeland of her doctor husband, Moody (Alfred Molina). But, depressed about the racism of the American medical establishment and pining for contact with his family, Moody convinces her to join him for a two-week jaunt. The Islamic fundamentalism and strange customs of Iran bewilder and frighten Betty and her daughter, Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal). But nothing prepares her for Moody's announcement that the family will be remaining in Tehran indefinitely. Despite beatings and more pervasive psychological control from her husband and his relatives, Betty makes it to the Swiss embassy (there is no American ambassador at the time). There, she learns that as the wife of an Iranian, she is now automatically considered a citizen and that she has absolutely no parental rights over Mahtob in this country. Betty then endures several years as a virtual prisoner, escaping only with the help of Westernized Iranian friends. Based on the book by the real-life Mahmoody and William Hoffer, Not Without My Daughter was coincidentally released during the long build-up to 1991's Gulf War.

Cast: Alfred Molina, Sally Field, Sheila Rosenthal

I don’t know if I’d say Oscar. She kind of dramatizes it. Not in that she over plays the situation, but that her performance feels more like something out of a soap opera sometimes rather than a grounded thriller. But even then it’s certainly not Razzie-worthy, not even close.

My grandmas cousin who is Mexican American married a Muslim man before this movie came out. Exact same thing she went through like in the movie. He was charming and loving after they had their child,he told her he wanted them to visit his family in the middles east but basically tricked her hid their passports and forced her to stay there. She found a way to escape with her child and never saw him again.

Movies like this are a good warning for people that consider dating someone from another culture, especially from countries that have a Sharia law. My cousin married a Muslim, before the marriage he was very secular-drank wine, watched the latest movies etc. She didn't want children but, was willing to change for him as long as the kids would be brought up secular. later on give them the choice to be devote. As soon as they got married he wanted him brought up traditional and put in a muslim school. the marriage lasted barely a year. I honestly think a similar situation happened just as this scene played out.

I like what they did with this scene. The way he says "we're staying here" in a hesitant calm voice then at the end of the scene he says it very demanding and harsh. I also like Betty's immediate "NO!" reaction when he says he wants their daughter to grow up there. She was already worried and scared but just the idea of her child growing up there makes her lose her composure. Great scene.

I've wondered why Molina not only waits until the morning they're supposed to go back to the US to spring this on her, but waits until her case is almost packed and after she finds out that Iran has laws where you have to get passport stamped 3 days before flying out of Iran again. It's obvious that Molina pretended not to have remembered the 3 day requirement because he already knew he was going to hit her with the "we're here for good" bombshell. But, he had that secretly planned since before they left the US. The movie didn't make clear exactly how long he planned to make their staying in Iran permanent, but it was very likely from the time he got fired from his doctor position at the hospital a few days before they left for Iran. He already before then was thinking about wanting to move there, but once he was fired, I'm sure that his mind was made up. I think for a long time actually, he was wishing to move back there, throughout all of the times he was talking to his family on the phone and missing them, and him continuously getting mistreated at the hospital for being Iranian. It's not fully clear why Molina waited until the very last minute on the day they were supposed to leave to tell her they're staying. I understand why he didn't tell her before leaving the US, because she would've then insisted that he go there without her. But they were in Iran for 2 weeks before he tells her they're staying. She was already trapped in Iran by her first day there so her knowing then wouldn't have given her any further advantage to try and go home. Him telling her last second only made the news even more shocking to her and made her reaction even worse yet. Maybe it's because he wanted to enjoy a 2 week vacation with his family without dealing with his wife freaking out, before the end of those 2 weeks where he knew then that he would have to get down to business. On another note, maybe he hadn't decided to stay yet until the end of the 2 week vacation there, after almost 2 weeks of getting endless pressure from his family, after them telling him he's been Americanized, and that they won't respect him again unless he stays in Iran now and reattaches himself to his Iranian roots. His getting fired from the hospital made him want to take a break from the US for 2 weeks, but after 2 weeks reaquainting himself in his homeland, he then made his mind up to stay

It's better to read the book; actually the book describes her situation as much worse than the movie, but in the movie, she behaves more dramatically than in the book (where her reaction is more realistic). The book also tells more details about the life in Iran of this time and what experiences Betty makes. Also, the actors in the movie are really overacting (it's a pity because they are actually good actors).

I think Alfred Molina should reprise this role, covering Moody’s life after they leave and how that affected him including when he tries to make contact with them...just to see the progression over time from this controlling, manipulative bully into a lonely, pathetic, defeated and broken man whose only much later realised the mistake that he made...we know how the story ends but it would be fascinating character study, seeing those blanks filled in...the documentary doesn’t really shed light on it...just focuses on his pathetic attempts to make contact with his daughter

@@clerisav485 That's is gorey but are you trying to say all Muslim men kill their non-Muslim ex-wives? This has nothing to do with faith and everything to do with domestic violence. DV happens to 1 in 4 women at least once in their life time and that is in the US as well as in Europe and sadly a lot of women end up being killed by their exes and this is mainly white men doing it. There are psychos and wife beaters in every culture sadly.

*Linda Imaan* Firstly I said no offense to anyone. Secondly no. I am sure there are great muslim men just wanting to live their lives as their book says to do so just like any other religious practitioner. But sadly there are a great deal of muslims who are so into their faith they believe that they can force their religion upon someone else as seen in this film. Women in Islamic countries can be whipped for not wearing a burka. Women in Islamic countries are not given custody of their children if they divorce. Am I saying that it's only muslims? No sir. Abuse happens everywhere but a large amount comes from muslims misinterpreting their book and thinking they have a right to control how their women acts. Also one of my friends who lives in Germany almost got sexually assaulted by a muslim. Thankfully we went as a group.
