Here is our final review of Notgrass' Our Star Spangled Story. Notgrass sent me this curriculum in exchange for my review. As you can see, we had a wonderful year. The pictures at the beginning are all from activities we did with OSSS.

Your girls are adorable :) I especially enjoyed your three year old’s honesty! It sounds like they are great kids, and they have really learned a lot. Most importantly, all of you had fun while learning together!

Life’s Blessings Thank you! She’s a hoot! She’s seriously so funny some days. She learned where Arizona, California, Canada, and Mexico are, and she loved that part. She is so fascinated with maps. I wasn’t even going to include her (in the curriculum or video) but she just is always there. 🤪 Can’t leave her out!

I have a four year old who is very much like her! I always include her in our Bible, History, and Science. She wouldn’t have it any other way. I didn’t intend to “homeschool” her last year either, but there was no way around it. I have seen all of your videos on “Our Star Spangled Story” and I love how you have spent so much time sharing it. That lets me know that you really enjoyed it. I went to public schools and hated History, but even I am interested in this one! Hopefully we can try it in 2020/2021 when my son is in second grade and my daughter is in kindergarten.

Life’s Blessings Aww, she sounds so sweet! Yes, I truly did love it! I also did not like history as a kid. The ONLY history class I ever like was my 9th grade world history class. That teacher was awesome. One day he locked us out of the classroom and we didn’t know what was going on. When he opened the door, the room was transformed into a war zone! The desks were on their sides and set up to make trenches and he had music going that was the sound of automatic rifles and bombs and stuff. He had camo on and the whole shebang. When he opened the door he was like, “Get down! Get down!” I will never forget it. We also watched movies in his class like Schindler’s List. He was the only teacher I ever had that made history engaging and I was bound and determined to make history engaging for my kids. I learned something new every single lesson. Homeschooling makes me realize how little I actually retained in school! The way OSSS is set up helps them remember key things. They don’t remember every detail of the Civil War, but they can tell you what it was about, who won, and why that was important. They couldn’t tell you the date, or the generals, or anything like that. In this one short year I feel like they retained more than I did my whole life! Connecting the history to people and do actual things they did helps it make an impact. They will always remember what a starvation party is, because we had one! I never even knew there were such things!

How long does an average lesson take?
@EducationalRoots
@EducationalRoots 4 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Crissup Just the reading or reading plus activities? Reading plus activities is from 30-45 minutes. I don’t think we ever went over an hour unless it was something special like the starvation party.

I have an 11 year old who will be in 6th grade next school year. He does not care for history, has dyslexia, loves people, loves crafts and drawing. Do you think Our STar Spangled Story will be a good fit for him?

@@EducationalRoots Thanks! My youngest will be 3 in August and going to a 2 day/week preschool at my church. So I'm thinking I would love for them to do it together when they are in 4th and 1st or maybe even 3rd and K :) We'll just have to recruit Daddy for the 4 person dance haha!

Soooo stinkin cute! Best review girls! I will show this to my girls as we will be starting this fall. Do you plan to cycle thru this again ? In how many years? Also what was something you didn't like?
@EducationalRoots
@EducationalRoots 5 жыл бұрын
BoxLove Yes, I do plan to cycle through it again for my little one. I will probably do it when she’s in 2nd grade. Actually I have a spreadsheet where I’ve mapped out the girls’ history, and I correlated it to when the bigger girls will be using Notgrass America the Beautiful, so we’ll still all be learning American history, but I can’t remember if that was second grade for her or not. Ha! Somewhere around there. This is so cliche, but there wasn’t really anything I didn’t like. We didn’t love Mountain Born, but I wouldn’t say we disliked it exactly. It had a good moral and all. It’s just we couldn’t get into sheep. Lol! Something we simply didn’t do was the make-believe activities with blocks. In almost every lesson there’s some sort of thing about pretending or building with blocks, but we simply didn’t do that. I’m sure my 3 year old would have liked that, and probably my 7 year old too, but we did the reading at night in their bedroom, and I wasn’t going to haul up the blocks. But besides that, I can’t think of anything we simply didn’t like. Well, my girls didn’t like the mush stuff we made for the starvation party, but they loved the starvation party itself.

Thanks for the video! I just bought this curriculum and I love it!!! I can’t wait to start using it. I was using story of the world and it wasn’t the right fit. Notgrass fits the bill perfectly!!!! I saw you are using from Adam to us. Do you think it is manageable for a fourth grader? I’m planning to use it next year for my middle schooler but I also have a younger one. She’s bright but writing is challenging for her. Thanks!!
@EducationalRoots
@EducationalRoots 5 жыл бұрын
Susan Sanchez Yes, I think you can make From Adam to Us work for a 4th grader. I would just pick and choose the assignments hey do. You could do a lot of the assignments that don’t involve writing.
