Notre Dame Big Ten Talk Growing Louder

Locked On BIG 10

Ай бұрын

The time has come for Notre Dame to join the Big Ten and step in line with the rest of college football. Stop pretending there is something special about remaining a college football Independent. The Notre Dame NBC TV deal pales in comparison to what other Big Ten football schools are getting and the fact that both Notre Dame and Big Ten football have contracts with NBC should make the Irish re-evaluate the college football broadcast landscape.
NOTRE DAME AND BIG TEN MAKES SENSE!
Plus, as Locked on Big 10 has long asserted, the fact that every Power school, including Notre Dame, is going to pony up an extra $20 million dollars a year for revenue sharing, seeking higher revenues from a home conference is a must! Notre Dame football finds itself in a similar situation as Florida State and Clemson who are earning far less than their market value on their broadcast deals. At least the Fighting Irish don’t have a $130 million dollar conference exit fee!
In the end, the talk about Notre Dame joining the Big Ten or any other conference is growing louder out of financial necessity.
RECRUITING HOTBED!
College football recruiting is hot right now and we will keep you up to date on all the latest from teams like Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Rutgers who continue to kill it!

Yup, this has been the Big Tenner playbook for decades. They think very highly of themselves...meanwhile, ND goes on, being a good partner, willing to play absolutely anyone that can come to an agreement. Big Ten people (many of which are fans of less-than-great teams) band together under the "Big Ten" banner to complain that Notre Dame has done so well without needing to be in a specific club. So they insult Notre Dame like an abusive spouse. Meanwhile, Notre Dame re-ups and increases their NBC contract to their convenience directly alongside NBC's Big Ten deal, getting an NBC TV exec as their new AD.

Then, with all that money, why can’t they buy enough players to compete at a higher level? Once again, I know I’m being terribly redundant! Michigan doesn’t need to entice with money. They are looking for a certain type of kid. Whatever his ranking is doesn’t matter because they want the kids who are mentally capable of working their tails off and looking at the bigger picture! Money players don’t do that! Until the other schools figure this out, they will be on the outside looking in. Just some more ramblings of an old guy who roots for BLUE! 😜

They are making more than what Craig is reporting here. It's why they continue to be independent. Are they making less, sure, but it's closer than he is reporting. Just a BIG10 talking head that is mad that ND isn't adding its prestige to his conference. As a lifelong ND fan, I do agree it's time though. It's just not going to happen unless they lose access to the playoff, because they are making enough as an independent, and NBC will continue paying enough to get that viewership of the ND faithful.

@@LockedOnBIG10 Domer here. While I am of the opinion that ND _should_ consider joining the Big (whatever in hell # it is now) if they can make a beneficial deal, it is not for the reasons you suggest... Many others here have suggested a number of reason why that may not be happening and some of the principal reasons that could change in the future. Money is hardly the issue. Firstly, your sense of the financials is... either woefully inadequate or purposefully obfuscatory as clickbait. If we are to be charitable and just assume it is inadequate, to recap: College Raptor (Citizens Bank) estimates '24 ND football revenues to be $136,688,613, which puts it 3rd, squarely behind Georgia and Texas (where it typically is these last few years although we were fourth after Oklahoma in '23, but likely to surpass them on the strength of several factors this year including the new 10-year, $10M annually apparel deal with UnderArmor). Breaking the overall number down, on the TV front, NBC opened renegotiations last November with us 1 year early to make SURE we didn't bolt as a result of their new deals with the SEC and the Big whatever. Are you _aware_ of who the new AD is at Notre Dame? What he was doing a year ago? ... On the low side, let's say NBC is worth 50M a year (that IS the low side btw), now add in around $17M per year from the ACC game rights share (that was the IRS filing in 2023). Ticket sales, merchandising, both areas where ND is near the top of the game, again usually just behind Texas and Alabama... then there's the apparel deal... and the TV part is barely half, but _that_ number is easily $67M. Internal discussions have represented a TV deficit of 10 to 15M vis a vis top competition as acceptable given our donor base and endowments. We could go higher, but thankfully don't have to. You must understand that revenues aside, 1) we never have relied on the constantly diminishing public funding that public institutions face (even now) to balance the overall budget, 2) We do not rely on TV revenues alone, and in fact while they aren't unimportant, the university as a whole and espcially the football program represent heavily endowed operations (for example, nearly all coaching positions and some general staff jobs as well as some series and other expenses are endowed). Schools that want to push the opening up of the financial race (and expense) are begging to 'throw us in that briar patch'. I'm on your side, but not for the reason you would give. ☘☘☘GO IRISH!

22 million is the previous deal. The new NBC deal is undisclosed but is reported to be between $50-75 million, plus Notre Dame earns about 20M a year from the ACC. That’s a pretty big error at the heart of your analysis. Also, the Penn State analogy is an argument against joining, not for it. PSU has been a shell of themselves and was relegated to being just another Big Ten school. They’re the poster child for ND to stay independent.

Am I the only one who doesn't think USC's schedule got more difficult than the PAC? First they no longer have to play Stanford and Utah EVERY season, which are 16 losses over the last 15 years that cost them 5 PAC championships. The only Chip USC won in the last 15 years was because Stanford was forced to play them twice and came up a field goal short in the champ game. They never have to play Oregon and Washington every other year on average, that will get even further apart with the new B1G rotation. Last season was the first time the Trojans had to play the trifecta of Stanford ,Washington and Oregon in YEARS(to predictable results that left Caleb in tears). They again avoid Oregon on their new B1G schedule, then they have Maryland, Rutgers, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin (a real murderers row.... NOT). USC's schedule is difficult due to self-inflicted scheduling of Notre Dame and LSU, but that has little to do with the B1G. Penn State will be difficult, Michigan will fade away eventually to Brady "Hokesville", now that Harbaugh isn't around to swipe all Stanford's and Notre Dame's recruits. USC won't be winning B1G Chip's any time soon because they are USC, not because of a B1G schedule.

That's the same year(2008) they dropped 111 points on Notre Dame, Penn State, and the Buckeyes as if it was child's play......If it wasn't for LSU, they'd have the easiest schedule they've faced in decades.

The mathematical arguments (TV money) are always outdated on this sort of stuff (conceptually and . It doesn't necessarily matter what ND made in the past...it matters what they can negotiate in the future and what they actually need as an independent institution. And then we always get to the thinly-veiled threats like "...That schedule is getting touch for USC...maybe they'll drop ND!" ND and USC have been playing forever, they're not stopping. Remember when the Big Ten went to 9 games and Purdue, Michigan State, and Michigan pretty much stopped playing ND? ND went out and put new teams on the schedule, then got those teams when they could. Then we get to the "ND lost its mystique" argument. All of the tired old arguments you hear in this video always boil down to Big Ten people thinking VERY highly of themselves to the extent where they want to try and scare ND fans into wanting to join the Big Ten by telling them they're doomed! Big Tenners ultimately want a 'surrender' of sorts. They want a situation where Notre Dame comes to them hat-in-hand and says "You're right, we should've joined a long time ago, we just can't live without you!" That's not how the real world works, and also not how Notre Dame's relationship with NBC and other universities actually operates. Notre Dame is a valuable commodity and a good partner who will have many options going forward. Now that we have that out of the way, if the Big Ten expanded into 24 teams and there were 4 divisions of 6 teams, I would support them joining a division of Notre Dame, Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern (or similar), particularly if Stanford and Cal joined to make the west coast teams their own division. Further, if teams like Pitt, WVU, and BC joined to make an eastern division with Penn State, Maryland, and Rutgers, I would see this as an obvious natural landing spot eventually for ND, given that almost all of their traditional rivals would then be in the Big Ten. That sort of situation is the only way I'd really accept them joining. It would have to be too sweet of a deal. But for that to happen, maybe that means football is not tied to conferences so much and it's operating on its own level by then.

Notre Dame quit the rivalry, not Michigan. WTF are you talking about. READ 📚 Notre admitted to ending the rivalry. That was solely an ND Decsion. You don't have to like Michigan, but be truthful and stop making shit up. Also, Michigan played them for years, that's not chicken. I could see if Michigan played them once or twice and then stopped playing them. There is no rival Michigan is afraid to play. And again, Michigan nor Michigan state ended the rivalries. ND also stopped playing Penn State. That's what they do. They don't want to play Michigan that's their loss. Seems like Michigan is doing just fine without them.

I think Notre Dame. To the B1G is an obvious fit and is more likely than not in due time. I also feel there is 1 team that would make a perfect partner to join with them. Considering Rivalries, Culture, Academics, and brand. That team would be The U. Miami is AAU as well as Notre Dame, they have a rivalry Catholics vs Convicts. The have played in historic big games against each other. Plus it gives the B1G Conference a team in Florida with the biggest tv market and best high school recruiting area in the country. And as a bonus you add a Major Bowl game site to the Conference in the Orange Bowl. Which I am sure everyone in the B1G would love to spend a week in South Florida in December or January to play a bowl game on a field you would be very familiar with. I think the fans wouldn’t mind the trip either.

I would also love to see UNC and Duke (over Clemson) added to the Big 10, the Tarheel / Blue Devil basketball rivalry should remain intact. (NC State in any sport is not a rivalry at all). And none of us knows the fine details of the new NBC contract. What we do know is that NBC is treating it's Notre Dame games as an inferior product to it's B1G Saturday Night games, except when ND plays a B1G school. Even then, that game is produced as a B1G game featuring ND. NBC is putting most of it's efforts into promoting and producing the B1G package of games over its ND package.Better team in the booth, better studio crew, higher production values. Networks are not in the habit of throwing away money on an inferior product. They re-signed ND,but they are doing so with an objective greater than just doing Notre Dame vs ACC and service academy games that draw less viewers than second tier B1G games. NBC wants ND to at least ditch the ACC and sign a scheduling agreement with the B1G for 5 games, where ND can maintain it's "Independant" brand.
