More information about the video content bellow:
1. In 1605, French colonists established the first permanent European settlement in the future Canada (and the first north of Florida) at Port Royal, founding what would become known as Acadia. Beginning with King William's War in 1688, six wars took place in Nova Scotia before the British defeated the French (and ultimately expelled much of their population). Most of Acadia became part of Nova Scotia, but gradually Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick became separate colonies. Both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were later part of the 4 founding provinces of the Dominion of Canada.
2. On the very southern tip of the Halifax peninsula there is a park called Point Pleasant, seems normal enough…. Well back when Canada was still under British control the crown leased the land known as Point Pleasant to the Nova Scotia government for 999 years. Even though Canada is now independent this contract still stands as Britain leasing the land to the Nova Scotia government. Therefore Britain still technically owns a small part of Canada to this day!
3. The city of Halifax has always been a hub since the province’s founding. This made the city one of Canada’s oldest population centres. The establishment of Halifax marked the beginning of Father Le Loutre's War. By unilaterally establishing Halifax, the British were violating earlier treaties with the native Mi'kmaq population and thus a 6 year war commenced.
4. During World War I two ships in Halifax harbour collided and caused a fire, one ship has a load full of gun powder and the other ship was carrying fireworks and tnt, the fire cause one ship to detonate resulting in the worlds largest explosion ever seen at this time (and second still today only to the atomic bomb!). The city was devastated and destroyed, 2,000 casualties, 9,000 injuries, the city was to be rebuilt but will never forget.
5. You must know about the sinking ship of Titanic. Do you know that 150 passengers in Titanic were buried in Halifax?
6. Charles Fenerty, a poet from Halifax was the first person to use wood fibres to make paper. He started experimenting in 1839 and produced paper from wood pulp in 1841. It was not until the introduction of wood pulp in 1843 that paper production was not dependent on recycled materials from ragpickers.
7. NS has an island just off its shores called sable island. Back in the 18th century a ship bringing horses to Halifax ran aground on the island and while the crew did not survive, the horses did and made it to safety. Since then the horses have flourished and evolved to survive, sable island horses are smaller than a normal horse and have a thicker coat.

Well, of course there were a lot more facts. But I'm only one man, I don't have a whole lot of time to research these videos, so i have to pick the ones that seem to be interesting to me. But yes, you're right, the vast majority of my videos could've incorporate a lot more facts.

What specific treaty prevented the establishment of Halifax? The earliest that I (an admitted non-specialist) am aware of is the Treaty of Peace and Friendship from 1752; signed some three years _after_ Halifax was established.

From Wikipedia - The Halifax Explosion was one of the largest artificial non-nuclear explosions. An extensive comparison of 130 major explosions by Halifax historian Jay White in 1994 concluded that "Halifax Explosion remains unchallenged in overall magnitude as long as five criteria are considered together: number of casualties, force of blast, radius of devastation, quantity of explosive material, and total value of property destroyed."

Halifax is not a city its a Regional Municipality
@SebastiansFacts
@SebastiansFacts 6 жыл бұрын
For all intents and purposes Halifax is an urban agglomeration, aka a city. It is managed as a regional government, but I don't think anyone that comes to Halifax thinks the place is anything else but a city.
