Novak Djokovic Return of Serve Analysis - Pro Tennis Lesson
Novak Djokovic is one of, if not the greatest returners in tennis history. Djokovic's return of serve is one of the main reasons he's been able to dominate and win so many grand slam titles for over the last decade. Novak Djokovic recently defeated Nick Kyrgios in the Men's final at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships to win his 7th Wimbledon title and 21st Grand Slam in total. This win puts him ahead of Roger Federer for the first time, which is even more remarkable since, at one stage, Federer had sixteen grand slams and Novak had only one.
In this lesson, Coach Simon Konov of Top Tennis Training will show you exactly why Djokovic's return of serve is so great.
Novak Djokovic Return of Serve Analysis
Ready Position - Djokovic starts off with a wide base, and a low centre of gravity. His return of serve grip when waiting is his normal forehand grip on the bottom hand and his backhand grip on the top hand. By using this athletic ready position, Djokovic is able to push off explosively in either direction. It gives him the best possible start to his return of serve.
Split-Step - Djokovic times his split-step on his return of serve so that he is mid-air when his opponent makes contact on their serve. This allows Novak to see which side the ball is coming to. Whilst being mid-air on his split-step, Djokovic then pivots out with the foot closer to the ball. This action allows Djokovic to save himself time on landing and then pivoting, which is the standard way to split-step in tennis.
Loading Phase - As soon as Djokovic lands off the split-step/pivot step, he then loads up on his outside leg, and stores energy in the leg muscles. This semi-lunge position allows Djokovic to be stable and balanced prior to hitting his return. It also allows him to reach wider balls, since he can push off explosively from the lunge position.
Coiling The Body - Whilst Djokovic is loading up with his legs, he's also coiling his upper body. This creates a small backswing, eliminating the need for him to swing independently with his arms. By coiling the upper body, Djokovic is storing energy in the core muscles, which will then be released as he swings towards the ball.
Short Swings - Djokovic is a master of timing his return of serve. And he's able to do this because he uses small backswings, most of the time. By shortening his swings, he's able to create time on the ball and make contact out in front of his body.
Cut Off The Ball - Djokovic applies pressure to his opponents by reducing the amount of space they can hit their serve into, by cutting off the return. He does this by always moving forwards, to go and meet the ball, as opposed to chasing the ball backwards.
Tactics When Returning - Novak Djokovic is a master of exposing the server when they are at their most vulnerable. After a player hits a serve, and lands on one foot inside the court, they're off balance.
This is exactly why Djokovic will often aim the return into the feet of the server, to catch them off balance.

Awesome video Simon. Very helpful! Would you please give some advice on how to deal with a situation during a mxd match that the male opponent keep hitting high/deep/lob ball to my female partner, eventually grinded her down and I feel helpless standing in front of the net? I’m a decent net player. what should I do differently to turn things around? Thx

What I am very curious about is what you make of his habit of staring at something close to him, then at the direction of the server and then close to him again several times prior to every serve he receives. I feel he doesnt just do this by chance and that there is a reason behind it. My theory is he does it to accomodate his eyes to focus on the incoming ball that is obviously first quite far away and then needs to be tracked and focused very quickly when it is close. By already doing this ‘eye exercise’ prior to the serve this may help with getting the ball in focus just slightly quicker? Allowing for a more clean contactpoint. Be interesting to hear the opinion of a (sports)optometrist on this. Nice vid btw 👍

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial interesting! is there focus on this in high level tennis training? See mostly baseball videos on it on KZfaq. Similar with left/right eye dominance and how it affects stances/types of strokes. Feel there's not a lot of emphasis on it but what do i know :D

Just watched Djoko’s return slowmo’s over and over again and actually he knows where the ball is coming before he’s in the air, before his splitstep. Look at the slowmo video… at the start of his movement he lifts up the foot (before the splitstep) on the side where the ball is coming. So he lifts up his left foot to start his backhand return and the right foot when he starts his forehand movement. So his splitstep jump is towards the good direction allready. He just reads his opponent perfectly. Do you agree Simon?

How about body serve return? Also do you have footage of his eye focus routine 10 seconds before. Looking up down, up,. Is it wide focus or close focus. Anyone seen that. I heard wide focus ( so not watching directly seeing object, bqll in this case, has 4 faster neutral pathway and could be more appropriate than have ball i direct focus). Any thoughts, experiments?

We cover the body return inside our return course on our website. As for the eyes, I suspect he’s using a zoom in, zoom out technique and widening the eyes so he can focus on seeing it better. That’s a very advanced skill that many players don’t need unless you’re facing 140mph serves
@wiinko16
@wiinko16 2 жыл бұрын
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial thanks. Make sense you didn't cover it since yeah under 140 miles it is not to useful. will keep it in mind if headwind helps server to reach that speed. But usually that kind of wind gets women name, and return to house should be my main return to focus on :)
