George Galloway is one of Britain’s most formidable political campaigners. He has been elected as a member of parliament for four separate constituencies - winning on three occasions while not standing for a major political party.
Earlier this year saw him elected as the MP for Rochdale. That success was, in no small part, because of Galloway’s position on Gaza - and his outspoken criticism of Israel.
But was that merely the swan song in a rollercoaster political career? Or the beginning of something much bigger?
Could George Galloway’s Workers Party of Great Britain become a genuine threat to the Labour Party - particularly on issues of foreign policy - over the years to come?

War is a malignant tumour imposed on our civilisation, for the most part. An issue we have limited power over, so we start with ourselves and BE the difference we would like to see, work on ourselves, and our inner selves, that will emanate to our fiends and family, this is the only sure way to change our greed and power lust driven war mongering civilisation. BE THE CHANGE, and it will surely spread, over some time, to a place where our world is in the hands of philosophers and wise men, rather than intellectual half wits and war profiteers.

War isn't nice and you'd think in this day in ages it wouldn't be necessary. However while there are rogue governments (Russia) a military is required. History is proof that disarmament is ludicrous and today is just as important to be part of NATO.

Not at all. Bigoted views against women, gender and sexual minorities are dangerous, as shown by their transformation into legislation in countries with far-right governments. We’ve seen it in Uganda, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iran, and the United States (e.g. repeal of Roe v. Wade). Those are just some I can think of off the top of my head. Galloway getting things right on economics, international relations and political economy in many areas does not excuse his more reactionary views. Novara have been extremely discerning as usual.

Exactly. All successful workers parties in the western world learnt that they were always made up of a broad range of groups and identities. As to have purity tests or focuses on more social / identity issues would always end in the groups implosion. This lead to the tried and tested strategy to always to focus on worker's rights as it would lift all boats.

I am impressed Novara have taken the chance to interview GG, however, I was surprised 😮 by the trigger warning given by Aaron. And I am surprised that Aaron says he would not vote for George at the Rochdale by-election. There was no other choice on that ballot paper. Consistently, being a Scottish Nationalist, GG, and me are diametrically opposed, however, economically I would give him my vote at a general election, at the expense of the SNP.
@monkeymox2544
@monkeymox2544 18 күн бұрын
Does that mean that you think that Scottish independence wouldn't be necessary if we had a fairer system? Or just that you prioritise more left-wing economic policies over independence? I'm asking out of curiosity, because (as someone born and raised in England, to be clear) I have always thought that independence is a liberal solution to a set of (neo)liberal problems, that won't really solve the underlying issues, whereas a movement towards socialism (or even social democracy) UK-wide would solve many problems no matter which constituent nation you live in. Personally, I'd like to see the UK change to a federal system, with an upper house giving equal representation to each constituent country, with more devolution, moving towards social democracy in the short-to-medium term.

The trigger warning at the beginning of the video painted a completely different picture to the content of the interview itself. I don't always agree with Novara Media's stance on issues, and this is one of those. Galloway made his views very clear, articulated his points well, and comes across as one of the very few honest and principled MPs out there. Whether you agree with him or not on minor points of a wide ranging interview, there was nothing there that justified the tone of the introduction. I would expect that from the BBC. Not from Novara. EDIT: I should add, it's a great interview. I hope all this exposure has lead to more people watching it.

Galloway is an humanitarian, which counts for a lot in this day and age. Unless the left unite behind a credible alternative like him, we’ll end up with the same old same old or even worse - Farage as PM 5yrs down the line. Black, white, gay or straight? One thing we all have in common and can unite behind is we’re working class - I have heard Galloway say this.

Aaron, this is the first time I have been disappointed with Novara. I don't agree with many of George's positions, but that is the problem with the Left, we are divided. Many of the issues are identity politics that have divided and distracted us on the Left. They have also discredited the Left for many common people that don't see things the same way, leading them to more reactionary politics. The Left needs to focus on gaining political impetus again, not bickering over identity issues. We can worry about those things once sanity has power over greed again.

@@mjc01 Well, according to an interview I saw with George on the 'Not the Andrew Marr Show' channel, Novara Media promised George that they wouldn't release this interview until after the election (Thursday?), but then they released a really out-of-context clip which made it look like George thought that homosexuals weren't normal. Watch : they tried to stich up GG on that channel.

Is George Galloway's accusation true that Novara Media released clips from this interview prior to the council elections, after agreeing explicitly with him beforehand that they wouldn't ? I'm asking because I would like to be sure about NM's integrity.

As someone else has said, Aaron is "playing to the gallery". Actually, this is a big problem for the Left. Novara is one of our best outlets. But, because the funding model is via subscription, it means that they cannot afford to offend their viewers. This will lead to self-lobotomization if we're not careful.

When people interview people with contentious views they are often criticised for, "giving them a platform." If, however, the interviewer, "pushes back," viewers might cut them some slack. I think that on reflection, Bastani felt that he hadn't pushed back enough to avoid being criticised so he sought to cover his tracks by saying, beforehand, that he deplored Galloway's views. In a more mature society, hearing what people have to say - without feeling the need to oppose views merely so that people do not view you, the interviewer, as having fascilitated them - would be the norm because it is the only way to have honest, and informed, debate.

Do you condemn the Arabs for attacking Israel a sovereign country in 1967 which led to the six day war?
