hey, are there a lot of people like you who convert to catholicism? Do you have a platform where you share your story of conversion? I am curious as to what made you change your mind. I am a Catholic but I have some doubts about my own belief so I am lurking along this kinds of channels to get ridnof my unbelief.

@@heavenchainslayingmoon Hi I wrote you a long and detailed response but KZfaq or the moderator removed it, I know not why. Sorry, but I can only give the briefest summary: - God is necessarily true, and Christianity is eminently reasonable - see works of St Thomas Aquinas and secondary works by Ed Feser or GK Chesterton - Jesus is the Messiah and was truly resurrected from the dead. Look more into the Shroud of Turin and read the Early Church Fathers, whose confidence in this was unshakeable even unto death. - Religion is essential to man, but there is a world of difference between man's religion and God's religion, which I affirm is Catholicism. To understand the anthropology and meaning of the Bible, read the works of René Girard. - Sin is real, and man needs healing. - Read the Confessions of St Augustine, - Catholicism is joyful and full real, rejecting nothing (but sin), sanctifying everything. Best of luck, brother.

God bless you for searching! May I ask, do you know anything about the proportions of messianic Jews who believe in: 1) the Holy Trinity (Three Divine Persons in One God) 2) the necessity of sacramental baptism (with water, in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost) Or at least, do you know if there are groups of messianic Jews who insist on these and others who do not?

Fr. books are unusual in that they assume a first familiarity with the New Testament from a non-Jewish point of view. Hence it is New->Old (Testaments). It may help you to first become very familiar with your new Faith, next, Bereshit, and THEN read Father’s books. They’ll be a lot easier to understand. You’ll be all the more astonished by Our God! And welcome!

Whenever I feel like not attending a daily Mass I ask myself what else is more important than Worshipping and Receiving Jesus in Holy Communion? Nothing equals Mass. I also ask myself what if today is my last day how will I answer God at my judgment to why I wanted to sleep in rather than attend Mass. Going to Mass is the most important thing we can ever do!! What an awesome God we have!!

After attending the High Mass the first time my young daughters begged to return. And one of them said -I feel like I am at home when attending the TLM. (Out of the mouth of babes) Thank you Fr. Mawdsley for your teaching which helps us deepens our understanding of the TLM and in the process deepens our Faith.

I commend these videos because they prove the point that the Roman Liturgy is the best catechist. If we simply know why the Priest does what he does and says what he says at Mass, then we will know our faith fully. Of course, studying the Bible is a vital part of this, but again, the best pedagogy for Bible study is the Mass. So the Mass is always the starting point with the Bible as the means to deepen our understanding of the Mass, even while our the Mass itself is the key to unlocking the Bible. No wonder then that Satan attacked the Mass above all else.

I agree with you, that the highest point on the earth, past Present and future, is to glorify God through the true TLM mass. Nothing created by man (music, Science, litterature, etc) can come close to that. The Cross is our salvation. Our Savior has paid the price, nothing else will do except to confess, repent, pray, repair and glorify and love the Trinity.

Yes, what about the children and those who aren’t wise and learned? My parents grew up before the council, so their education(though already faulty) gave them a better foundation of understanding of the Faith. Fast forward to the 80’s and 90’s when I was growing up, and I had no idea Mass was a sacrifice or that Jesus was truly present(I had a Protestant understanding of Jesus being spiritually present only). My mom taught me what the Church teaches about the Eucharist, I was told the truth when I was being prepared for First Holy Communion, but telling a child vs showing a child means a world of difference. When I was told the Eucharist was Jesus, I took it as just another thing adults tell kids to make things special, like Santa and the Easter Bunny. As a thirty something, the disconnect between what I was told about Jesus vs how Jesus was treated and worshiped at the Novus Ordo just wasn’t matching up and I wondered what this was communicating to my own children. Thank God for my journey to apostolic Catholicism and finding a Latin Mass! Thank you for your videos, Father.

I'm in my sixties now, and served Holy Mass as an alter boy in the 1960's. I recall Latin being spoken during Holy Mass (I assume according to the 1965 Missal), as well as the distribution of Communion at the alter rail (with me holding the platen beneath the communicant's chin to safely catch any hosts that may inadvertently fall). Then came 1969-70 when I transitioned from serving as an alter boy at Holy Mass to playing the guitar at "folk masses." It took some time for me to fully understand what was lost in that transition, and how it affected my family's Catholic faith. I thank the Lord (and our Lady's intercession) for allowing me time on this Earth to understand the Holy Mass and the Sacraments more fully, and to obtain the Sanctifying Grace that I will need when I stand before Him in judgment. And I thank you, Fr. Mawdsley, for the work you are doing in increasing the Catholic faithful's understanding of Holy Mass.

NO came when I was 10y old and...after Confirmation....truly left the Church...not even realizing tradition remained. And make sure you go to a mass with a validly ordained priest
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 10 ай бұрын
On the face of it, that sounds like good advice. But how is it supposed to be put into practice? Of course, if someone has reason to think a priest is not validly ordained, then they should follow that up to find out or else avoid his ministry. But what about the general situation? Spending on the points at issue (and there are various arguments out there), it is unrealistic to expect most members of the faithful to have the theological training required to know what constitutes valid orders, and where necessary to know the facts of the case of someone's ordination (what rite, who by, how was the bishop consecrated, who by), and further to be able to know the mind (intention) of the bishop / candidate involved. So I think there is a better way, which is more in keeping with the history of the Church. God grants the faithful a sensus fidei fidelis -- a spiritual instinct by which they can know if their pastor has the voice of the Good Shepherd or not (for His sheep know His Voice). Also, the better they know the Faith, then by the analogy of the Faith they can know if a new teaching is suspect, or clashes, or stinks. If one cannot find clarity and the ring of truth, and to hear the catechism upheld, then best to go searching for where one can find these -- but always trusting God. If one comes to a point where one thinks the true Faith is nowhere to be found, then probably one's standards are too scrupulous. If someone has the Faith, and loves the Lord, then they ought to be able to walk into any Mass, and if it looks like the Mass, if it sounds like the Mass, if it is reverently celebrated, and if the priest preaches soundly, then they can be at peace to adore there. Only if a problem comes up should they think it is time to search elsewhere. I don't think it is realistic that each of the faithful should do research on each priest to judge whether or not they are validly ordained before attending Masses he offers. I write this comment not to knock back your point, but just to put it into perspective for people who might not know where to begin with these things, and thus fall into needless worrying. God bless you.
@giak7525
@giak7525 10 ай бұрын
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM I agree for the most part. In my situation, i tried just going to latin masses close to me but was disappointed most of the time because almost all of them had some kind of error creap in from the new rite. This problem was completely eliminated by just attending SSPX masses. I've been to SSPX masses in France Belgium Italy and the USA, and I have never had a problem with the rite or the ministers. The priests always spoke straight truth directed at the soul for the purpose of salvation, and you can definitely hear the difference in the sermons. There are people within my family who refuse to go to SSPX chapels because they say things like they are outside of the Church. I have come to the conclusion that the Church they are referring to is not the church founded by Christ any longer but rather the end times counterfeit Church of the Antichrist. The reason is that its head is not Catholic. Francis is not a Catholic. We were warned about this in the Bible, by the saints, the Blessed Mother multiple times, and Pope Leo XIII. So then I questioned the validity of all 7 sacraments changed with Vatican 2. It is a fact that the word sacrifice was eliminated from everywhere, including the new right of ordinations for the priesthood. If the devil was able to infiltrate the highest place in the church as prophesied by Pope Leo XIII, wouldn't he try to invalidate the sacrifice itself by invalidating the priests who offer sacrifice to God the Father in reparation for sin? For it would surely bring an end to God's church. God did promise to be with His church all the days even till the consummation of the world, which is why I believe Archbishop Marcel LeFebvre, through God's grace, successfully preserved the Catholic church by preserving the priesthood.

Father, should we always be intellectually paying regard to these prayers of the Mass, following in a missal or is it OK to pray the Rosary, for example, the sorrowful mysteries?
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 10 ай бұрын
Truly, do whatever helps you pray best. St Thomas said we cannot love what we do not know. So we begin with the intellect, to know what is true. And if our will is sound, we will love what is true. So we are not meant to be so busy with intellectual activity that we never get around to loving. But we should not be so lazy with our thinking or so content to sit in dark ignorance that we never search for the truth so as to know the object of love -- ultimately God. God bless.

Interested to hear what others have to say here. Meanwhile, for a more specific answer than I have above: I think it best to vary what one reads in the hand missal at Mass. As it is almost impossible to read all the words that a priest says while at Mass, then this should not be anyone's aim. One idea would be to be attentive to the Mass and pray / adore, and whenever one finds one's attention has wandered, to dip into the hand missal to be reminded of what it is all about. As it is difficult in the beginning to know where to go in the missal, one could also make resolutions to get to know the various parts of the Mass. For example: - to read the prayers at the Foot of the Altar at every Mass one attends for a year. - to read the Offertory Prayers, or some of them, at every Mass one attends for a year. - similarly, for part of the Canon (though it is difficult to read it all, as one will definitely want to pause to adore). After a few years of cycling through different parts of the Mass, it is much easier to dip into the Missal for a few lines, and many thoughts will come back to the surface, and one is soon in a prayerful state again. It is also good to read the Gospel and Epistle the evening before a Sunday Mass, or early in the morning. Then it becomes much easier to hear them prayerfully during Mass. Or one could resolve to be 15 minutes early for each (Sunday) Mass, and read the Collect, Secret and Post Communion, and ponder them before Mass begins. In silent prayer (meditation), it is best not to use any book at all. But many find it helps to read a page or two at the beginning of their meditation, then ponder and pray with this stimulus. If one finds that one becomes distracted, one returns to the book to read a few sentences, but then put it down again. I think it is similar with the Mass, except that we should put the work in at some point to understand as best we can, and this makes it easier to pray in subsequent Masses.

I certainly wasn't comfortable saying the Rosary during Mass until I was familiar with what was being said by the priest, via the Missal. But I also became conscious that I was trying to participate in a similar way to the way I had participated at NO Masses, strictly following everything and muttering resonses under my breath. So the Rosary was a good way to move out of this NO mindset and become more meditative in my participation, focusing on the Passion. It also helped me to elevate the role of the priest, to understand he is getting on with the business of the sacrifice of the Mass whether we the congregation are here or not.

Thank you Father for your very long reply, I will try and do what you suggested. I have another question about Sunday Mass. I live on an island and though we do have Novos Ordo Masses for the last 10 years or so I have only been going to the traditional Masses. Unfortunately the priests have to come to us by plane and so we only get a Mass once a month and that not always on a Sunday! I know the history of the Novos Ordo and for this reason cannot go to it any more. Am I in mortal sin because I cannot keep my Sunday obligation? Please write back if possible, many thanks, God bless you

If you "cannot" keep the obligation then it is not an obligation. Some people genuinely cannot abide the novus, others use that as an excuse not to go to Mass. But talk to the priest whom you know about all this, as they will know your situation and options. Ad Jesum per Mariam.

So profound, thank you Father. I recommend to everyone to read Father’s “New/Old” series of books. Can I ask you Father: I pray the 1950 breviary ( all English); am i getting enough of Scripture in Matins, or do I need to read the Bible so that i get all of Scripture? ( ie, is what i get in Matins enough?) Myles Maloney, Edmonton, Canada
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 10 ай бұрын
It is excellent to be reading all that Scripture through Matins. For everyone who can read, the most important book to read is the Bible. So it is worth doing daily (even if for 3 minutes, but better to build up gradually to 15-20 minutes, to make a habit). If we can read (many through history could not, or cannot today), at some point, we should have read the whole Bible. Then you partial readings are a good way to continue. Or you could pray / read as you do for a few years, but eventually find a way to read the whole Bible. Tim Flanders has three excellent reading plans here (meaningofcatholic.com/2020/11/27/holy-bible-reading-plans/). They are annual cycles tailored for beginners, or intermediate, or for the entire Scriptures. The last one follows the liturgical plan (also used in Matins), but entails the entire Scriptures. Or one could begin simply: aim to read the Gospels. At some point after this, aim to read their whole NT. And some point after this, find a way to read through the whole OT. And after this, start all over again. And after this, do it again. And after this, do it in Latin (Gospels first). There is a beautiful rubric in the 1959 (I think) breviary, whereby if the beginning of a book of the bible is due to be read, but a major feast displaces it, then one comes back to it the next day. The beginning could never be entirely dropped, as the beginning stands for the whole. Like reading Jn 1:1-14 after Mass stands for the whole Word of God. And as indeed Jesus, Our Head, contains all. How disingenuous of the Vatican II era to wipe out so much Scripture from the Divine Office, and then complain not enough Scripture was read, so they moved on to devastate the Mass by claiming we needed more Scripture (they messed that plan up badly) -- actually I think they wanted a more Protestant-Jewish emphasis on words to get away from the Sacraments - matter - Sacrifice. Basically, I think it is good to make an easy plan for oneself and stick to it. And after a few weeks or months of steady success in keeping ones resolution, ramp it up a bit so over time one is doing more and more. Half an hour Scripture reading in a day wins a plenary indulgence. Thank you for your kind comments on the New-Old series.

Don't put yourself under any pressure to read all the texts in a Mass or to keep up with the priest. The Sacrament is greater than the text. The words are supposed to help the faithful adore the substance of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, to adore Him Who died for us, which the Mass presents to us. If the faithful attempt to read all the words in every Mass then that will severely limit their prayer. I would recommend just reading a few of the prayers, slowly, to catch their meaning. Over time you will know what is in them and you can read other prayers. Over time you become familiar with all the parts of the Mass -- and it properly takes years. Priests have to do this too -- at seminary they take years to become familiar with it all. It is a Protestant error to think worship is all about words -- that we have to hear every word, understand every word, follow every word. This is not true: we have form and matter in Catholic worship, we have the real thing, the substance, the Real Presence of Jesus. And there is a sacred action: the offering of the gifts, the sacrifice of the Son. To understand and love this is not a matter of following every word the priest says at every Mass. All that said, you know the Canon of the Mass is the same at every single Mass. If you wish to follow it in the hand missal, I would recommend that you concentrate on a few prayers of it, and maintain this over several Masses. Then select other prayers, and focus on these for the next few Masses. In time you will be prayerfully familiar with the whole Canon. Often then it is enough for you to have the 'headline' (the first few words) and you know the sense of the prayer. Sorry if I am not getting to the point. Let me know if I should try and explain again, or if this is sufficient.

?Father Mawdsley, have you or someone else written the text of the TLM in one column and the Scripture references that support or justify the prayers of the Holy Mass? And, it might even be necessary to quote Talmud to account for a given action or prayer; but the idea is to show that the Law prefigures what we have in the TLM. (Not that you have the time to do this.). It would be cool to see the Holy Mass and its true antecedents right next to each other. Just sayin’.
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 10 ай бұрын
That would be a fascinating work -- and of course the Propers for the Mass are mostly scriptural too. Just a point of clarification, I don't think the Talmud would need to be quoted anywhere. It was written after Christ, after the New Testament, long after in fact. It has nothing to add to the Scriptures, which are God's Revelation (the Talmud is not). Maybe you meant the Tanakh, which is what Judaism calls the Old Testament. This of course would have plenty of application.
@OakStump
@OakStump 10 ай бұрын
@@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM No, Fr. Mawdsley, I meant Talmud, insofar as some parts explain Temple practices, utensils, and layout. In those places, I presume, the references from the Tanakh would ground those descriptions. Regardless of when the Talmud came about (after 70 AD), did it mention anything useful? If so, look at it. If not, move on. Once the last temple fell, Jews tried to figure out how to offer sacrifice without a temple. If you look in the Siddur (Jewish prayer book), chunks of Torah that discuss temple sacrifice are read aloud. It is a sacrifice of words. On the other hand, the Holy Mass offers THE SACRIFICE which temple sacrifice prefigured. A reality, not just words. I am merely curious which specific Torah passages match up with the parts of the Holy Mass. And, I’d like you to do that…if you have some time. Thanks.

And concerning the broken bread: We thank You, our Father, for the life and knowledge which You made known to us through Jesus Your Servant; to You be the glory forever. Even as this broken bread was scattered over the hills, and was gathered together and became one, so let Your Church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into Your kingdom; for Yours is the glory and the power through Jesus Christ forever. @ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 10 ай бұрын
Sorry I did not get round to responding to your earlier comments. It is a bit difficult to give useful advice about vocations (beyond generalities which doubtless can be found online) without meeting face-to-face. There is a danger of saying something which 80% of people would take as was meant, but there are a few people out there who take pieces of advice as if they were inspired or bound to obey. I have no reason to think you would do that, but I do recommend talking it through with priests or religious face-to-face. That said, if anyone is thinking of a religious vocation, they should definitely follow it up. All that is necessary is to take the next step, as this is most likely to lead to true discernment. For example: - one reads about it online; - then read some books about the lives of the saints, particularly if written by a member of a religious order one is interested in; - then visit convents or monasteries for short retreats (or for men, seminaries, though not here for retreats). If at any of these stages one truly loses interest, then perhaps one is not called. But if the interest remains, then after prayer and discussing it with the local superior(s), it is worth committing to a place and seeing what happens. Every year in a religious house (or seminary) is simply a step toward discernment. It is not a final decision. It is never wasted, even if after some time one leaves. Finally, I would recommend to anyone that it is worth doing whatever it takes to locate places which are exclusively traditional. Hope this helps.

Suscipe Sancta Trinitas (from "Explanation of the Prayers and Ceremonies of Holy Mass") "The Priest having ended the Psalm, returns to the middle of the Altar, and there, with his hands joined and his head slightly inclined, he says: Suscipe Sancta Trinitas, hanc oblationem quam tibi offerimus ob memoriam Passionis, Resurrectionis et Ascensionis Jesu Christi Domini nostri ... Things of high import here stand before us. An Oblation is spoken of: Suscipe hanc oblationem: Receive this Oblation. The Priest says these words of the Bread and Wine just offered by him; nevertheless, he has really in view neither this Bread nor this Wine. These things are, indeed, sanctified and blessed, and hence they deserve to be treated with respect; but the Oblation here presented to the Divine Majesty, could never be confined to an order of Sacrifice purely material, as was that of the Jews; it is evident, therefore, that the Priest is here stretching forward in thought to a something far higher: he is presenting the Offering of the Great Sacrifice which is soon to be accomplished. - And, O holy Trinity, we offer this Oblation to Thee, in memory of the Passion, of the Resurrection, and of the Ascension of Jesus Christ, our Lord. So, we must here note these three things in Our Lord, without which He would not be complete. First of all, He suffered, but He could not be satisfied with suffering alone, so He died also, and these two coupled, constitute what we call His Passion; but this is not all, the Lord rose again. Death, the punishment of sin, is, as it were, the devil’s triumph over man, and therefore it would have been a true defeat suffered by Christ, had He died without afterwards Rising again. But further still, He hath gone up into Heaven, by His glorious and triumphant Ascension. Our Lord could not possibly have remained on earth; until He open Heaven, and Himself enter therein, in His Human Nature, Heaven must needs remain closed to man; on this very account, therefore, our salvation is not wholly effected, unless Our Lord ascend to Heaven, after having suffered for us, notwithstanding His being truly the Risen-One, being, as St. Paul expresses it, “the First-Born from amongst the dead!” So, then, let us well drink in this great Truth, namely, that Our Lord Suffered, that He Arose, but that man’s salvation is not wholly accomplished, if he still abide as an exile on our earth; to the Passion and Resurrection, must needs be added the Ascension. Such, then, should be our Faith, because such is the Economy of our Salvation, in which are contained these Three Things: the Passion, the Resurrection, the Ascension. So well does Holy Church understand that these Three are needed to complete Christ, and that therein is our whole Faith comprised, that she makes a point of insisting on our expressing the same in a marked manner, here at this moment of the Offering of the Sacrifice."...

@@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM I'm sorry Father, but you haven't answered my question on what's wrong with a good Novus Ordo Mass?
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM
@ScriptureandTraditionFrJM 7 ай бұрын
@eskimoman000 I did answer your question with, as a beginning, a video link. But you need to have ears to hear (Is 6:10; Jer 6:10; Ezek 12:2; Mt 13:15; Apoc 2:29). Your question is framed in a way which indicates the very problem. What do you mean by a "good novus ordo"? Martin Mossbach (I think) once said the difference between the TLM and the novus is like the difference between a monarchy and a so-called democracy. The monarchy is a good system (from God) which can survive a bad king. So also the TLM is awesome, from God, and the Mass remains awesome even when sad by a 'bad' priest (perhaps distracted, or not devout, or rushing). But so-called democracies are actually faulty by design in order that they can be taken over and manipulated by people who do not have the common good at heart (Martin M might not have gone this far, but I am extrapolating). So the novus ordo is designed in order to disintegrate. Of course there are lots of honest priests doing their best with it, and they mean to give glory to God and to serve the salvation of souls. Presumably these are the ones who offer what you call a "good novus ordo". But look where it is all heading. In Switzerland we see women standing around the altar with an improperly vested priest and deacon, joining them in saying the canon. This is sacrilegious in multiple ways, yet it is there by design. The novus is meant to be able to be adapted through the generations so that we end up with lay people presiding over what is called a 'service of the word'. From here is it meant to disintegrate further so it can be part of a one world religion. Many people might protest this analysis. Yet it is happening before our eyes. Of course a priest can say the TLM badly, yet the rite itself will expose him and demand he be corrected. Not so with the novus ordo. The point is not about the priests or the people who attend. It is about the rite. If we do not care to preserve our rites, the wisdom of the ancient, the faith of our fathers, the apostolic tradition, the deposit of faith, then we will get what is coming to us.

When you don't have a TLM available, what do you do? Please try to have some compassion for those of us who do not live in the US or whatever country you're in that has it. I live in Israel. We're stuck. Should we not attend Mass at all? I don't think so. I am not sure the Byzantine rite is a suitable alternative although that is available where I live. I tried watching a Byzantine Mass on YT and it seemed confusing even tho I had a Byzantine wedding many years ago which was actually annulled. Not because of being Byzantine, other reasons but while we were married, we often attended a Byzantine Mass if it was available. I'd have the double challenge now of learning the language and the liturgy. I attend Arab Mass now but at least the liturgy is familiar.
