She was in the Supremes, the greatest and best selling girl group of the 60's. They eventually were billed as Diana Ross and the Supremes as their popularity grew to higher and higher levels and the media focused ever closer on her. Finally she embarked on her solo career. A true legend and icon.

I can't believe you guys haven't touched on The Supremes yet. They were THE girl group of the 60's and you've kind of gone all around them. Diana Ross and The Supremes are queens and legends. They were one of the cornerstone groups of Motown. This, of course, is Diana as a solo artist, but please go back in time for The Supremes when you can.

This was released in 1995. She had been on the scene for 30 years plus at this point. You have to try her earlier stuff, from when she was with the Supremes. And then work your way through the years. She has a whole catalogue of hits.

I don’t get why this is the first song they’ve done of her. If you put all her songs in a basket there’s no way I could run into this song if I tried. She’s sold multiple millions; she’s up there commercially with Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley.

Billboard ranked The Supremes as the 16th greatest Hot 100 artist of all time. They were the most successful American vocal group. One time I read that the Supremes were third behind The Beatles and Elvis in terms of ht records (and/or record sales) during the 1960s. RSR: You need to go down this "rabbit hole"--starting with "Love Child" by the Supremes.

Most of their early material was written & produced by Berry Gordy or Smokey Robinson. They had so many great hits such as "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In The Name Of Love", "Back In My Arms Again", "I Hear A Symphony", "You Can't Hurry Love", "Love Is like An Itching In My Heart", "Love Is Here & Now You’re Gone", "You Keep Me Hangin' On", "Love Child", "Someday We'll Be Together" etc.

Dianna has essentially been performing over my entire 65 year lifespan, as she started performing in 1956, the year I was born. She's always been an icon and idol, both with The Supremes and as a solo act. I got to see her in concert just a few years ago... still puts on a GREAT show (she was in early '70s at the time). She made mention that her feet were killing her and ended up taking off her shoes, but that didn't affect her performance one bit. What a show! She also had her "other" daughter (singer-songwriter Rhonda, not Tracee from Black-ish) on stage with her for a few songs.

She didn't discover the Jackson 5, that is why Chris used "discovered" . Berry Gordy connected the two by having Diana "presenting" the Jackson 5 as the newest Motown group. It was first by invitation at Gordy's house and then on an album and on TV.

You should react to Love Child by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Released in 1968 it is about a woman who was born in the slums to an unmarried mother and how she does not want to be an unmarried mother herself. Very socially conscious song that was a big hit.

I remember I bought that record when in high school and my mother didn't like it, thinking it was risque. Later I told her it was quite the opposite. It had a message about preventing having children out of wedlock. But just the name "Love Child" freaked her out. But it's a great song.

She rose to fame as the lead singer of the vocal group the Supremes, who became Motown's most successful act during the 1960s and one of the world's best-selling girl groups of all time. They remain the best-charting female group in history,[2] with a total of twelve number-one hit singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, including, "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", and "Love Child". Motown producer Bobby Taylor discovered The Jackson 5, at a concert in Chicago in 1968. The Jackson 5 was the opening act. The story that Diana Ross discovered The Jackson 5 was part of Motown's marketing and promotions plan for The Jackson 5. They wanted to bring as much attention as possible to The Jackson 5, and fortunately for music lovers around the world the plan worked.

I must admit I am surprised this was a suggestion to listen to with the kind of career that Diana has had, but it was refreshing to see a more modern song from her and rock it in her 50s. She was 50 or 51 when she released this. She started as the lead singer of the Supremes in 1959, at only age 15!!! Then she left the group and started her solo career in 1970. This is a DEEP rabbit hole.

i don't understand... how could you not of hear of Diana Ross. She was the Queen of Motown, was the lead singer of one of the most successful musical groups instrumental in tearing down the colour barrier in music and "Dream Girls" is loosely based on Diana Ross and the Supremes. Diana was also a style icon. Even my mum (who i White and blonde), tried to emulate Diana Ross and her style in the 60s! And sooo much of the music you say you grew up, came from Motown stars. I think it's super important for African Americans to know their Motown and the immense work these artists did being on the frontlines of the fight for justice/equality literally but also through sharing art that appealed to EVERYONE. The Guinness Book of World Records declared Diana Ross as the most successful female music artist of the 20th century with a total of seventy charted hits, and was later bested by Madonna. As a solo artist, The Supreme's became the first female artist to score six number-one hit singles. The word Diva was first used, and popularized to describe her, she is known as the first Original Diva, for popular music, she has brought Big Hair, Beauty ,Class, Elegance,Showmanship, and High Fashion into the mainstream music industry, and started the trend of fabulous entrance's, and exit's, and wardrobe changes. She was the Black American Academy Award nominee Hopeful, for her acting in Lady Sings The Blues, and continues to perform in her own television show's, and at the age of 78 this March she is still making music, and selling out concerts. With her Supreme and solo hits, she is arguable the most successful artist of all time if you add her solo and group hits together with fans of all age's and colors, she was a global success since becoming famous. And she has one of the largest fan base globally. She is also one of the few artists to have two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as a solo artist, and as member of the Supreme's. She is truly a unique artist with unique voice, and very few people ever try, and copy her or her style. Without her their would not be a Whitney or Beyounce. or a Madonna.Their have only been around two people before her that has came close to her level of fame, and that was American born Josephine Baker, and Lena Horn. And by the way Josephine Baker, was the first Black female Superstar, she had global fame but not world wide commercial music success. IE hits, She basically was a artist of Parisian music. The Supreme's where just as big as the Beatles. All other female superstars came after Miss Ross, only hoping for her level of success. Even Michael Jackson wanted to be like her, lol. but true.

She had some beautiful hits with the Supremes, and solo hits like The Boss, I'm Coming Out, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Love Hangover, and Missing You. Please do not forget about Whitney Houston as one of those amazing divas in the 80s and 90s. Please do Whitney's song, I will Always Love You. Thank you for your reactions.

Michael Jackson's dream was to sing a duet with her. By the time he was solo they were on different labels. They had a couple songs for 'The Wiz'. He purposely put both their lyrics together on 'We Are The World' so they could have their duet he wrote.

My favorite song by Diana Ross was "My World Is Empty Without You", one of her early (1965) hits with The Supremes. In 1967 their name was changed to "Diana Ross & the Supremes".

This Diana Ross from the mid 90’s…..her third decade making great music. Diana and the Supremes were one of those great music seeds that grew out of Motown. Their musical catalog starts in the early 1960’s. You can spend 24 hours on Female Friday on Diana and the Supremes.

She has a huge catalog of hits. Start with The Supremes, and then her solo career. She sung with Michael Jackson in "USA for Africa"; a video you reacted to. This song doesn't show off her voice. I think this was from her last albums,

Paula Abdul probably grew up on Diana Ross as Diana is 77 years old and Paula is 59. In Fact we all grew up on Ms Diana I grew up in the 60`s and 70`s and am only now begining to realize how lucky we all were to grow up with the iconic music and musicians we grew up with. You love taking it back to the 60`so you really , really owe it to yourselves and your channel to listen to The Supremes ( featuring Ms Ross on lead vocals) start with Where Did Our Love Go , and continue through Baby Love and onwards to greatness. Diana Ross the solo artist is probably one of the best known female vocalists ever and she has gone through many styles and changes throughout the years so it`s difficult to recommend anything that encapsulates Diana Ross. Her ballads like I`m Still Waiting and Do You Kniw Where You`re Going To? are top notch and when she does disco as in I`m Coming Out and My Old Piano she is second to none she also did an album of duets with Marvin Gaye, check out You Are Everything, You`re A Special Part Of Me and others. On a side note, I don`t know how many times I watched Blackish and thought how the mother looked like an older version of Diana Ross...L.O.L, well when I think of Diana I do see her mostly as she looked in the 70`s though I have to say I just checked her Twitter and saw the picture of her entire family that she posted at Christmas and she still looks just as stunning as she did then.

The Supremes were contemporaries of the early Beatles and initially were more famous. My older sister listened to both groups. Stop In The Name Of Love and Baby Love were probably their biggest hits.

This is not a song I've ever heard of, but she has many iconic songs as a solo artist and with her group "The Supremes" (*The Supreme Songs: Stop in the name of Love, You Can't hurry Love, Someday we'll be together, Stone Love, Come see about Me....*Songs as a Solo artist: Endless Love, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, I'm coming out, Upside Down, Touch me in the Morning, The Theme song from Mahogany). 🙂 She was an actress also (*movies: Mahogany, The Wiz, Lady sings the Blues). She's also the Godmother to Michael Jackson's kids.

Definitely gotta do Love Child when she was was the Supremes, and Ain't No Mountain High Enough from her solo career. She was also an actress and you might want to put "The Lady Sings the Blues" on your movie list. Diana was nominated for a grammy as Best Actress for her portrayal of Billie Holiday during a turbulent time in that singer's career. Ably supported in her role by Billy Dee Williams (hearthrob) and Richard Pryor. The film was nominated for five Grammy awards, and the album soundtrack for the movie topped the charts.

FYI, Love Child was not recorded with the Supremes. It was technically a solo effort by Diana. However, it was recorded with another group, but I can't remember their name, but I believe it starts with an "A." Mr. Gordy thought it would be perceived well to give credit to the Supremes, and his strategy worked. However, it was during that time that Ross was preparing for her exit from the group to debut her solo career, which debuted in 1970. Again, technically, Love Child was a solo effort by Ross.

Jordan, you have heard the name Diana Ross, because Barry and his brothers talked about writing "Chain Reaction" for her. But, beyond that, she was extremely popular in the 60's with and without the Supremes. If you haven't seen it, she played Billie Holiday in the 1972 movie "Lady Sings the Blues."
