I had the most unethical FNP interview this week at a primary care practice with Glaring Red Flags. While the Office Manager, who scheduled to interview me, had to run out for a family emergency I was interviewed by the "Lead Medical Assistant" where she was reading questions from her phone, sent from the office Manager. After looking over my qualifications I am an experienced FNP and new grad PMHNP. I was asked " do you have any obligations outside of work? Do you have children? Ages? Are you married?.. my qualifications/work experience didn't seem to matter. The fact that these were asked shows that they are unethical and looking for a work horse

At my first NP job, my residing MD would not allow for admin time, there were no set hours, scheduled training, or ramp up schedule for seeing patients. I was told if I couldn’t get my work done, I could drop down to part time and finish my charting on my off days! Lol. I was only two months in and had never worked in that specialty. I also got 4 days of vacation time for the first year. 🤡

Thank you for your channel Liz! You have inspired me over the years to “do hard things” lol. With that being said, I am a CNA, single mother with 2 kids so ready to go to nursing school! We of course live in our own home, no family close by etc so I work responsibly full time, all bills paid for 100% by me. I am just not finding anyone that has gone through nursing school as a single mum or not living with parents/parents helping, husband etc. The nursing program is m-f 8-5 and i’m like HOW can you not work 40hrs a week and still pay ALL bills, not just rent but all bills, childcare etc. Even if you worked 2 12s on the weekends that wouldn’t be full time or feasible as a mother/provider. My question to anyone that can help is does financial aid really pay thousands for school plus thousands for all living expenses? I just don’t see how it all works! When I received loans in the past it was like $5000… thats like 2 months living expenses. People say “its possible” but then don’t give any practical step by step advice. I need answers lol!

You’ll definitely need help . Personally, I didn’t work at all when I was getting my BSN. The people who worked , only worked weekends . The amount of work was taxing and i studied all the time . You can go the other route ie LPN to RN to BSN to MSN. There are schools that have weekend classes for your LPN. You’ll have to look into it though . I live in houston TX and there are weekend programs.

Not a NP, but I used to work in a doctors office with a newly hired NP, and lord that girl was STRESSED! This vid confirms a lot of my suspicions, because in hindsight, she was essentially working as a glorified MA in a white coat, just without having to do the scutwork. She had to room her own patients, answer phones, scribe for the doc, didnt get her own office space. Fwiw she was in the process of training so she could eventually do some procedures and consultations, but I don't think the doctor actually knew how to properly utilize her as a provider in the practice. the NP wound up quitting after like 5 months, and the doctor never wound up replacing her either, which I think points to how the doc didn't actually think through what a NP position in the clinic would actually look like. (tbh the entire practice was a mess and i was happy to get out of it myself lol)

New grad NP (just passed boards, wooooo!) Thank you for this video! I have a question about the last one... What is a good amount of admin time to ask for? Like an hour daily? Or a few hours a week? I have no clue what I need and what's normally asked for!
@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 2 жыл бұрын
congratulations!!!! You can breathe a huge sigh of relief now! thats the best feeling in the world. Hope you are super proud! I would negotiate for 4 hours a week if you are in primary care. because there is a TON of paperwork, calling, reviewing documents, etc that is happening.

Hi Liz, I’m an RN who wants to go to NP school. I work in a community health clinic and can see how stressed the providers are all the time. I’ve heard that NPs are generally happier in specialty areas? Is this true? I want to be an NP but also value a work-life (mostly life, haha) balance. Let me know your thoughts on this! Thanks 😊
@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard that as well! You generally have a lot more time with your patients, you don't have to know "everything" you just have to know all of it for one more specific subject matter which is more managable, and you wouldn't be doing all the referrals, coordination of all care, etc. Usually the offices are also well staffed so you aren't doing your own prior auths, letters, etc. So it sounds overall like a much better time

@@NurseLiz thanks so much for your insight! Your videos are incredibly helpful and raw. We go into healthcare for the right reasons, wanting to do good for our patients and improve their lives. And then once you start working you see all of the barriers that exist that are just out of your control. We all share the same passion you have, so thank you for all that you do! :)

No admin time ? RUN. Also, learn about billing and know how much revenue you generate for a clinic. Also, demand to be treated w professional respect. Does that mean you get the corner office? (no, you are not a physician) my point is often times after years of RN work, we notice now as NP’s, we are not treated as well as an RN when it comes to professional-respect and compensation. Non-clinical admins can’t control the physicians so they take it out on the mid levels. You’re the milking cow, but yet you’re treated like it’s a privilege to work there? I have two masters degrees and I have to ask my practice administrator (who probably does not even have a bachelors degree nor have they ever cared for a patient in any setting) if I can leave on time or if I can block 15 min on my schedule? We have to stop allowing this.
