A lay person, not an engineer, not a port expert, pilot, captain, or sailor can see immediately that the pedestals for that bridge were inadequate protection for the supporting towers. Further, there had been a bridge catastrophe on the Delaware River in recent history. Why had no measures been taken to protect the bridge? At least, "dolphins" could have been laid at the pedestals. Many should be in prison for criminal negligence and worse.

I can tell you. The ship lost power and hit the bridge at about 8 knots and the bridge collapsed.

No power; no steering. Ship hits pylon. Simple enough. Update safety equipment (dolphins) for bigger modern ships.

Maybe add breaking section of the bridge. So if a bridge hit by a ship only a section of the bridge is damaged.

Not only should there be better protection but a change of when the tugs release the boat should be in open water not in a tight and congested harbor

Mercy of the tides is just an ignorant lie. That boat, moving 8 knot's, goes straight until you drop port anchor.

What are we doing to protect other bridges from being destroyed? Remember South Padre's? That was 2001.

HOW could a bridge like this be built without ANYONE ever asking the question - What if a ship "hits" the bridge ??? Cleary, the NTSB is not aware of the time lapse photography that would "answer" the questions she does NOT KNOW !!! 3:25

The bridge was completed in 1977. When were those dolphins installed? This barrier protection served no purpose in this accident.

Tugboats are REQUIRED to help ships along the way up to the mouth of the (Atlantic) Ocean. At least that's how it's done with the U.S. Navy,... And YES, that means, or ESPECIALLY means, UNDER BRIDGES, OVER TUNNELS, NARROW PASSAGES as in the Entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, etc, etc, etc,...

@@randmiller88 the infrastructure bill had nothing to do with this. But you show how smart you are. How about we keep China out of are harbors. Or required a local guide in and out of Port. Say no to China

Fuel samples are sent to labs after every refueling in ports...there must have been American pilots on board as that's the law worldwide .They handover at open sea ..once a ship looses its engine power it cannot be abruptly stopped the momentum is so high ..worst nightmare for Captains especially in congested waters with strong currents..they couldn't start maneuvering astern either...😢

Instead of political appointees like Jenifer Homendy with absolutely no education or experience in transportation safety, professional engineers with deep experience should be leaders in such boards. She’s apparently enrolled in a master’s course according to her wiki.

You need a black box for what again? The ship obviously lost power, it hit a bridge as a result! That's called Murphy's Law. Now for all you smart people, the concrete pads everyone talking about to ships from hitting bridges, I can't believe it's not common sense and it's really pathetic that I need to explain a ship of that size, nothing would have stopped it from hitting that bridge! Every bridge is weak and was built by the cheapest bidding contractors! It's America and how things work!
