I hope these simulations will bring more earthquake awareness around the world and educate the general public about potential earthquake related hazards. All these simulations take into consideration only the shaking caused in close proximity to the earthquake's epicenter. Also, a friendly reminder that for this video's purpose, I have shortened the actual duration of the simulation. Any earthquake over M 7.5 could last for more than a minute. The great Tohoku quake that hit Japan in March 2011 had a magnitude of 9 and lasted for about 5 minutes.

Live California Seismograph: @CaSeismograph
-----------------------------------
These earthquake simulations were created in Blender 3D with the Bullet Constraints Builder (BCB - a structural simulation code made by Kai Kostack) which extends Blender´s basic physics functionality with a sophisticated toolset to simulate load dynamics in building structures.

The good news is that modern nuclear reactors are designed to immediately go into emergency shutdown (called a "SCRAM") if an abnormality in their operation is detected and will do so automatically. Assuming the reactor containment vessel remained intact and that there are plenty of backup systems that remain operational, the chances of a large-scale radiological incident resulting from a scenario like this should be minimal.
@Diamondcreeper903

@Orca19904 I am interested in nuclear reactors and I know that the reactor building is specially reinforced and surrounded by a second building and (at least in PWR reactors) the core is also protected by a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) and if for some reason the core cannot be cooled down and it melts, then the RPV and the double reactor building will protect against the leakage of radioactive substances into the environment, besides, when building a nuclear power plant, you need to do a safety analysis that takes into account things like earthquakes and other natural disasters.

the 10 to 12 scram would not work to much damaged happens to fast and the power plant would get a lot of attention to try and stop meltdown lets just hope it don't use graphite if that is the case there would be a 2nd chernobyl with fire everywhere but that is if it is all out meltdown because the containment building would not fall apart like that to let you know how strong those are THEY CAN TAKE A JET AND BE FINE

I experienced the March 11, 2011 M9.0 earthquake at my workplace in Ibaraki, south of Fukushima. The seismic intensity around here is equivalent to IX in MMI (JMA seismic intensity 6+), but when the building was constructed from 1967 to 1971, it was not expected that an earthquake of M9.0 and huge tsunami would occur. It caused an accident.

Can you show us the reactor room and other critical elements for these magnitudes? I feel like the outside part of the building suffering damage doesn't really show you where or at what point the critical reactor elements start taking damage. That seems like something that might be important in terms of hazards. I can imagine that if the quake created a flaw within the coolant loops it might cause severe damage to the reactor even before the first window breaks in the main building.

I'm quite skeptical when it comes to the realism of this video. Nuclear power plants are designed to withstand even the strongest earthquakes possible. Just think of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, in Japan. If i'm not wrong it was a 9.1 on the Richter scale and the Fukushima daichii and dainii npps were not damaged at all.

I highly doubt that a 7.1 would cause the reactor's containment vessel to collapse. Especially if the cooling towers remain standing. Maybe there wasn't a concrete material option in this simulator.
@PaulFisher
@PaulFisher 10 ай бұрын
Yes, this strikes me as extremely unlikely. The containment buildings use truly obscene amounts of rebar and (per the World Nuclear Association) in Japan in 1995 they withstood accelerations equal to approximately 1G, firmly in IX+ intensity territory based on the estimations from USGS shake maps. The cooling towers, on the other hand, tend to be lighter, more delicate structures with primary members being straight lines along the surface of the hyperboloid; thus, the way one would fail is very different than shown here.
