Sweden’s influential and long revered heavy metal giants IN FLAMES are celebrating two major milestones in 2020 with their 30th anniversary as a band, and 20th anniversary of their seminal, critically acclaimed album, Clayman.
The band recently formed a worldwide partnership with Nuclear Blast who will debut a special version of the record, Clayman 20th Anniversary Edition, honoring the breakthrough release on August 28th, 2020.
Clayman 20th Anniversary Edition features all new artwork and 5 new bonus tracks including a brand-new instrumental medley and re-recorded versions of fan-favorites such as “Only For The Weak” and “Pinball Map.”
Re-recorded songs were produced by Howard Benson (MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, MOTÖRHEAD) and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge (GREEN DAY, ROB ZOMBIE).
The record will be released digitally as well as on CD Digipak and a special 2xLP colored trifold vinyl that includes a 16-page booklet, 11 remastered tracks on a 12” record, 5 bonus tracks on a 10” record in a printed sleeve

i really do think thats in flames biggest problem, if they would re record songs like voices, and some other recent decent songs in the style of clayman, it would kick alot more ass. it's too polished. Best example is the riff from Voices, it's exactly the same as in Borders And Shading (2004) yet it kicked alot more ass in 2004 because it wasn't that over produced.

@@jonatanhedlin3992 Actually it's 66.67% of the band who wrote Clayman that were on this new version. Peter and Daniel were not part of the writing process. They just came and recorded after the material was written and arranged by Anders, Björn, and Jesper, with Björn programming and writing draft drum grooves in addition to guitar since he was the previous drummer. Jesper now says Anders doesn't write, but he's forgetting his own words about Anders writing the vocal melodies and words enhances the song. The singer/lyricist always gets songwriting credit that's just a fact. So is it a fact that the writing core of In Flames is still intact for the majority which is why they still kick ass. It's also why Jesper has had very little to no success on his own. Because he wasn't the "whole band" as people like to claim. He did start it, but they're still going strong. He couldn't stay sober so he had to leave. In Flames, Cyhra and another band too. These are all facts. And I like the guitars in the old version, and the cymbals in this are a little washy. They could be programmed. The vocals however, bothered me on that album. That mix of low and high with the low speaking voice was less clear than this, and anders is a much better singer now. I don't know why you people listen to In Flames just to bitch and talk about the same album or two being the only good In Flames albums. They were supposed to be touring with Megadeth Lamb of God and Trivium right now, but since they can't, they went and did something unplanned, and I'm sure not totally how they would approach doing a full album, but the effort must be respected. A lot of bands wanted to do something special in lieu of touring during this COVID-19 time. This version didn't rub me entirely right at first, particularly the pitch bend. But after giving it a fair listen, instead of just clinging to the past, It's pretty good. Vocals are better. The solo ending is a lot more badass. That's my opinion. Whoever just listens to In Flames just to bitch should just move on then. I don't see 99.9% of you who bitch putting out anything better or as successful as In Flames. So put up, or shut up.

I really wanted to say anything good about this and all i can say is the new artwork looks great but this re recording is fucking awful. I mean this actually hurts i dont wanna call the band bad but this was a BAD idea to touch this album its just extremely soulless vocals arent anywhere they need to be for this album i guess im glad they haven't messed with soundtrack to your escape.

This sounds ridiculously processed, to the point that In Flames might be considered an Industrial Band now. It sounds like they recorded ever instrument part on little toy guitars, then recorded vocals, cranked the db up +28 and turned all the instruments down to a faint fart in the background. I wouldn't say this is a bad mix at all, in fact I think it's really good. I don't like the guitar sound that much, they seem kind of lifeless. Aside from that I think it's not nearly as terrible as people make it to be.

I agree that the drumming lacks the same intensity. Daniels style fitted so well to the overall sound of In Flames. I did enjoy the title track I the Mask, it felt a bit like old IF.

both this and the original have pretty horrible mixes man. The vocals in the original during the chorus cut way too early, the synth in the original blends with the bass in such a way that it muddys up the entire song, and the lick at 2:20 in both versions just flat out sucks. Ya'll have rose tinted glasses, neither are all that good.

this band has made some really strange decisions over the past 10 years, this is one of them. i knew it wouldn't be able to touch the original in the moment they announced what they were trying to do. i like some of their previous stuff with this sound quality, but the old stuff should remain untouched.

Have every record and was actually a bit happy with the latest album and some hope for the future, even if it will never be what made me fall in love with In Flames, sorry to say this but why would we buy this? This Re-Recording of Clayman felt wrong in every way possible. And thats not a good opening for fans wanting to hear the rest and buy the album. I don't want to buy this at all. As a Swede im disappointed.. =(

The video is good, but I'm not digging the new sound. Doesn't feel quite as powerful or immersive as the original. Has kind of a flat feel. Instead of In Flames making re-recordings, how about they only make lyric videos for their old songs? That seems to be the only way to do them justice. Someone outta slap the original track onto this video and sync it up.

The vocals are great actually. I must honestly say the drums disappointed me because of how soft the song is being played and I don't feel any real dynamic like I used to when it was Daniel drumming and without Peter on bass, where is the In Flames groove section? Bjorn can only hold it down to a certain extent. I just wish that the new members would respect what the catalog is and play it the same way with the same groove. I love In Flames so sorry to be going on for so long... but Anders, Bjorn and Nicolas deserve a better bass player a drummer, no studio musician fill in sound one but solid talent. Remember how many years it took Trivium to finally feel settled with Alex. Anyway In Flames you will always be great to be but don't lose that groove sound that you have had for so long.

Older albums have their specific sound because of how raw and unprocessed each album was, having a unique sound. This is a modern recording applying all the compression and noise cancelling. Nothing wrong with this song. I like it.

I agree, not wrong though not my favorite. I disagree about 'raw' though. The original has more processed parts. As for 'modern recording'. I'm a sound engineer and familiar with their engineers who mainly use expensive gear for its great sound. They recorded using a 70s mixing desk. It's mixed on a mixing desk (with outboard gear) from the 80s which was known for its compression even back then (still popular, I use it myself). Mastering is also mainly with older gear. They all worked on great sounding rock/metal albums for decades so I wonder how much was a choice by the band/producer (he likes things more accessible).

The vocals in the original during the chorus cut way too early, the synth in the original blends with the bass in such a way that it muddys up the entire song, and the lick at 2:20 in both versions just flat out sucks. Ya'll have rose tinted glasses, neither are all that good.

Even if it was literally the best thing ever created in music history, people would still call it shit because its not the original they've been hearing for like 20 years. Battles is my favorite in flames album, if I said that in front of these people, I'd probably get shot. Anything after come clarity is wildly despised of simply because they drastically evolved. They became more melodic and emotional. Metal fans have always been super conservative and don't want what they like to change or evolve.

I don't think they were ever trying to "fix" anything about it, It's not like they deleted the older version from existence or anything. The remastered version was just a nice throwback to the original, kindof a celebration of in honor of the great songs they have done and what's to come in the future. At least that's how I see it

Sad and really unnecessary. The original mix was great the way it was, now the drums have zero punch, they sound like you accidentally muted the direct mics and we’re only hearing overheads and thinned out room mics. and the overall performance (not just drums) is just weak and uninspiring

yep mixing and mastering there's a looot of post processing. Not much added however but a lot is cleaned up and removed, and mastering sometimes there are effects added to make it sound "wider". Especially the guitars.

In flames was genre defying band who had their own style and sound, last 3-4 albums sound like everything else, their style is completely lost and thats why you see really many fans being mad/sad

I never came back, only to check. Last album I bought was Reroute. I can't see that changing in the future, especially with this Revert to Remain nonsense. Just remaster a classic and coin in, nobody wants a flimsy Clayman on a remaster.

I can see why there are people who don't like this, it definitely lacks the rawness of the original record. But listening back to the original Clayman song now... there are parts which come across as really tinny and unpleasant to me. This feels really fresh in comparison. And I'm pretty stoked about one of the vinyl designs. 😱 Having said that... some of these comments are pure gold. 😄

I have no issue with the desire to re-record classics. But don't make the production and mix sound so flat. Usually in the case of a band re-recording old stuff, the old stuff has questionable mixing and the newer version is an improvement. But this is the opposite. This modern metal production is just too sterile for me compared to the more organic sound metal use to have when it was recorded 20+ years ago. You guys need to get rid of Benson and get Nordström back or at least get a guy who knows how to do it right. Your last few albums also have had this flat sterile sound to them. The album art is a marked improvement however!

Amen! Clayman had one of my all time favorite Guitar tones and the overall production was pretty good. It was really rough and screams Melodeath. Clayman really had no need of a rerecording. Albums like Come Clarity could really use on though.

Finally constructive criticism instead of just complaining! I have not been able to listen this version with headphones yet, so I can't really say anything about mixing. I get it when people say "why fix something that isn't broken" but a new version doesn't make the old version any worse.

Maybe they have such insane studio speaker where it sounds just incredible, but forgot most people just have normal setups or headphones and it should sound good there formost and not only on 100k€ studio speaker.

they didn't re-record the whole record don't worry, just a couple songs... and those are bonus tracks... the album is being remastered for the 20th anniversary

@@timothyquinn5520 The guitar tone is very lacking compared to the original and most modern mixes. Compare this to anything off Clayman or Periphery 4. The leads feel very disjointed bc they cut off too much low end on those tracks, making them sound like theyre coming out of an old radio speaker, the rhythm guitars lack clarity and dynamics. I could go on about the whole track but yeah this isn't a marvel by any means.
