You're almost single-handedly convincing me I need to get out of Florida and move back to my childhood roots in Northern California for my very first nursing job after graduating in May of 2022. Any tips on how to interview? Should I send an application and follow with an email to offer the opportunity to interview in person?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, you're gassing me up haha. I will paste here what I said to someone in an email (she got a job offer a few days after applying from Texas): It took Monica about 3 months to get a job offer. She interviewed with 3 different hospitals a total of 6 times. It was very frustrating for her because she worked medsurg for her first 2 years as a nurse. Then, the next year, right before we moved here she worked endoscopy. So, as you can see, it was more difficult for her to get a job than it was for me because she was applying for medsurg jobs here in California and she did not have recent medsurg experience in her resume. But, ultimately she was offered a position in a medsurg unit at a Dignity Health hospital 1 hour away from our home. During her first week of orientation there she got a call with a job offer from Kaiser. She actually quit her dignity job immediately so she could start the orientation process with Kaiser the next week. I, on the other hand, worked in the ED in NY and had 3 years of ED experience and 1 year of Tele experience before I began to apply for work here in California. What I would say to you is that you should start applying as soon as your license is approved. And, come visit California in the meantime to get a better feel for where you really want to live. Also, it took me a few weeks to get a job offer for Sutter (I had my interviews from home in NYC. These days most interviews will be done through zoom), but took me 8 months of applying to Kaiser before I could even get a job interview. So, if you don't mind working at a place that is not your first choice, you'll be able to find a job in much less time than having to wait for an interview/job offer at one that is your first choice. Lastly, to prepare for an interview, go on Google and do your research on the hospital you're applying for and if you can find any info about the the specific unit you're interested in, read all up on it. Learn about the hospital's mission statement and history. Be yourself. Tell them your goal is to treat every patient as if they are a family member. That you care deeply about every single one of them and you want to make sure they have a valuable experience every time they come to the hospital. If you don't know the answer to something tell them you do not proceed until you can get clarification and you would first go to the hospital policy, and if you can't find the answer you ask a coworker to point you in the right direction. And you will always circle back with the doctor to. Make sure you're all on the same page. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Yes, I have other videos in my channel that break it down even more but essentially every Kaiser hospital from the bay area to Sacramento and Fresno ask share the same contract and wage schedule/structure. So, every Kaiser in three Northern California region will pay their nurses the same. The nurses in Southern California, however, have a different contract they state with one another, but they too essentially use the same contract and follow the same wages.

Hi, I never worked in the OR so I can't speak for that unit. But Sutter Sacramento definitely pays more than Sutter Roseville (by around 5 dollars more per hour) but you also have to pay for parking in Sutter Sacramento, so it kind of cancels itself out. The work culture at Sutter is way better than Kaiser. But you will still have some nurses (as is in every hospital) who think they know it all and are better than everyone else. But, from my experience, working at Sutter was so much better than what how I currently feel working for Kaiser. I felt a sense of community at Sutter. I don't feel that at Kaiser because we are too busy to even sit down and talk to one another. And Sutter is much less competitive than Kaiser. You'll definitely be able to get a job there before you get one at Kaiser or UC Davis.

Hi there! You're in luck because Kaiser and Sutter hire both, ADNs and BSN trained nurses. And, if you work in home health you might be able to find a job quicker as a home health nurse within Kaiser, but will take much longer if you want to get into medsurg (Tele will be nearly impossible because Kaiser does not like having to train nurses into positions they've never held before unless they're a new grad). What's benhud? We do get tuition reimbursement but it sucks in my opinion. Here's the text from the contract: "Effective January 1, 2019, Nurses working 20 or more hours per week may be reimbursed up to $2,500 per calendar year for tuition and continuing education credits. Of the overall total reimbursement, Nurses may submit up to five hundred dollars ($500) for education-related travel and lodging expenses." In NYC we used to get $16,500 per calendar year. @@NursesToRiches Yuck! That is a bad reimbursement. :( BenHud is short for Ben Hudnall Memorial Trust which is an organization that our unions in Socal, Oregon, and Hawaii partner with to offer free tuition, laptop borrowing, books, other classes to our members. Not sure where I would fall (2.5 years w KP, 10 years total in my specialty) but you all still get more. Do you get bonuses, too? We do like $3K a year approx. Do you guys have good healthcare benefits? We have no deductible/no premiums, ER-$50, routine visit-$5 or 10? Specialty-$10, meds-$10. Dental is all over the place. Vision is $180/year or something like that.

Whats the basic difference between regular nurse and per diem nurse?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 2 жыл бұрын
A regular nurse has a schedule of days that are assigned for him/get to work every week. They also receive health insurance, dental insurance, a pension, and many other benefits. A per diem nurse does not have a schedule of days they must always follow. Instead they put their availability in a calendar and then get called and asked if they would be available to work on days that the department is short staffed. Per diem nurses are used to fill in gaps in the schedule. They also do not receive health insurance or dental insurance. But, per diem nurses that work for Kaiser do get the benefit of qualifying for a pension as long as they work a minimum of 1000 hours per year.

From what I can see per DM has a lot of advantage in terms of pay. Are there any down sides to doing per DM?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you do not receive the benefit of health or dental insurance; you don't accrue paid time off; if the census is very low or the hospital is losing money, you might not be called in to work extra shifts; and, at a place like Kaiser you only qualify for pension benefits when you work a minimum of 1,000 hours per year.

@@NursesToRiches I see. And do the policies regarding run pay, working more than 8 hours to get 1.5 times pay and working more than 12 hours to get 2 times pay still apply for per DM nurses? Also from your wife’s experience ( since she works per DM) does she ever have difficulty getting hours to work? Thanks
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 жыл бұрын
@@RedFaceeee Per diem nurses qualify for all of the California overtime laws (1.5x pay for more than 8 hours worked or more than 40 hours in one week, and double pay after 12 hours) but they don't qualify for run pay, meaning they don't get the 6th day premium, 7th day double time, or continuous overtime after the 7th day. My wife could work every single day of the year if she wanted to because they're always begging her to come in or stay late.

@@NursesToRiches You’re the best. Thanks for the detailed response. I am a new grad and I wonna work 10-15 years as a nurse then retire. Which route, per DM or staff nurse, do you think would be a better option to make the most money over 10-15 yrs?
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 3 жыл бұрын
If you're single and need benefits, then I would recommend going for a benefited position instead of per diem. That is, unless, you are willing to work per diem and work extra hours to pay for your own health insurance out of pocket. Health insurance can be pretty expensive (average around $500 per month, and if you get sick you will have to pay thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses before the insurer will cover any medical care you might receive). However, if you are married, or planning to get married, or have a domestic partner, you will be able to get insurance through them. That's what Monica and I do. I work part time but receive full-time benefits so that she can work per diem and get her insurance through me.

@@NursesToRiches alternatively interview a few people who specialise in that. They may be glad for the exposure and sponsor you. Additionally, interview the people you know and their recruiters. I began exploring it several times in the past but never all the way through. Hi! each hospital is different. I just got one interview and was offered the position the same day. Every interviewer is going to be vastly different from the next. So, I can't really tell you what to expect during your interview. Just be yourself, but also try to answer the questions in a way that they would want to hear you answer the question. Always bring your answer back to make it company-mission and patient focused. And if you don't know the answer to something, be honest, and tell them you would look it up in the policy and ask for help.
