@@LXT43 I worked as an RN when I was young, talked to so many old people about their life. I can tell you that 99% who traveled the world when they were young end up broke in their old age. They couldn't afford housing, their medication, and stuck in a sh!tty nursing home. Seeing the Pyramids or the Eiffel tower isn't going to help you in your old age. Traveling around the world is marketing for you to spend your money. It's sad to see old broke people, who had money when they were young.

I would consider another state besides having all these nurses flock here to California for the money. California is in a crisis, and there are a lot of unhoused people popping up in nice neighborhoods with garbage on the streets. No place to go and it is unsafe to shop in downtown areas. Lots of home robberies and car thefts

Thanks for sharing your amazing journey! I’m a RN Case Manager in CA and mostly working for Health Plans in various Administrative roles. UM,QM,Project Management and of course Case Management. You both are obviously both very smart people and very mindful of your finances. Honestly, I have been an RN over 25 years and so many of them are impulsive and don’t do the basics. #1 buy a home asap. #2 invest #3 save money in retirement accounts #4 find out the highest possible pay doing the type of nursing job that you enjoy. Currently I’m a contractor for Kaiser and I love it! I worked for them 10 years ago but it was a different hospital and it was just a temporary position. Anyway I’m enjoying your channel and try to follow some of your other socials. You’re the best nurses on KZfaq for what I enjoy!

Buying a home asap ain’t realistic anymore
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 6 ай бұрын
The problem with buying a home is that many consider it an investment but often go about it the wrong way, turning it into a financial drain. Look back at how we approached purchasing our home, desperation led us to borrow $70k for the downpayment because we only managed to save $30k prior to applying for the mortgage. Let's look at some numbers: We bought our home for $697k (rounding up to $700k). For the past 7 years, we've been paying $4,100 monthly, covering our mortgage, property taxes, HOA, and homeowner's insurance. This totals $287,000 in mortgage payments and $82,880.84 in interest for the initial $70k downpayment loan. We also got some tax savings by deducting the interest and property taxes paid towards our home, averaging around $5k per year. Currently, our home is valued at approximately $900k according to Redfin, Zillow, and Realtor.com, while we still owe $584k on our mortgage. Had we continued paying $1,800 for the 3-bedroom, 2-bath apartment we had in Roseville before moving into our home, we would have had an extra $2,300 per month to invest in rental properties or low-cost index funds. Our future plan involves reinvesting in our business and allocating a significant portion of our earnings towards real estate and index fund investments over the next few years. If this means renting an apartment or home until it makes more financial sense to buy, then that's the path we're willing to take.

Fun video to watch, and I love the honesty about the profession and your lives. I've been a nurse for a year, and I completely agree that it gets treated differently than other professions. When nurses want to change professions or even just take a different nursing position for more money/better conditions, there's this idea you "owe" it to society/the unit/hospital to keep working there. I like nursing and my unit, but I realized right out of nursing school it was a 5-10 year career. Long hours, physically/intellectually demanding, weekends, holidays, less flexiblity than I thought...and for not enough compensation. Thanks for sharing so openly. Wish NYC would just pay better so you all could move back!

Typical Liberal controlled areas nothing new. They beat you down and keep you there so they can control you and what is most funny is the people keep voting for more of it. Over and over they vote Liberal and it gets worse and worse. Spare me the Conservative blame in Cali and New York Conservatives have not had any say in policy they have been Liberal controlled for decades. They talk like Liberals are for the poor and middle class yet in areas where they have had complete control for decades they are the worst places in America. Somebody please explain to me how Liberals are for the poor and middle class when their track records show otherwise? I felt the same in the opposite - the east coast felt ‘off’. NYC felt too much like a concrete jungle, hustle and bustle, expensive, horrible weather, crazy expensive housing, etc. All the immigrant issues makes it even worse. I felt and feel so at home on the west coast in So Cal. All the best to you and your move.

I am glad they discussed how difficult it was when they first moved to Sacramento region to find a Nursing job. It is an understatement to think someone will just arrive and be able to make this wonderful money. The area is very competitive, and it is not uncommon for new graduates in the area to struggle to even get a job. I mention this because lots of people seem to think they will show up and start making this awesome money. I am working at two facilities in the area, so it is doable, just be realistic with yourself, your finances and budgeting before just making a one-way trip. I love the area and am happy to be here, there are great areas for families if you research.

Hey guys, love your videos, I’m learning alot! Our situation is similar to yours, we moved from central NJ to the Bay Area in 2014 with alot of optimism about our future. At that time we had 2 babies. We loved California, but missed the East Coast culture and being around family and old friends. In CA, we had two more babies and then really started thinking about NJ. We’re back in NJ now, but let me warn you… you will miss many things about California. It’s the most beautiful state in the country…

Funny i stumbled on this video while watching something else. Funnier thing is that we plan to move to Sacramento (we got friends there, we almost moved there!) for the same reason to earn more than what we're earning here in new york. I saw myself in your position and exactly matched my mindset. Gotta show ths to my wife (whos also a nurse) and see her perspective. Its just interesting that before we move (or if ever we are really moving) this videos shows me what we might end up to. Kudos to both, hope to meet you here in NY!

I’ve been following the two of you on KZfaq for a while now and love your podcasts. They are very insightful and entertaining. I have wanted to move from Texas to California for many, many years but just never did it. My son move to the Sacramento area after graduating college and he loves it. After coming to visit I have now fallen in love with it as well and wanted to be closer to my son. So with that being said, I jumped at the opportunity to transfer my job to California, but it’s 2 hours away from Sacramento and more expensive where I am.(San Jose). Your podcast has also shown me that there are more avenues to nursing other than bed side at a hospital. Your podcast has opened my eyes to so much more in nursing than ever before. Many years ago, when I graduated from high school and went off to college, my major was nursing. But it became very clear to me that this was something I did not want to do! But I always think back and wish I did complete college. But I am close to 60 years old now and I don’t know if this is something I should still look into. I am taking into consideration the money that nurses make now and where I could specialize in, since I can work another ten years.

I live in Campbell it is not all glamorous. There are many unhoused people you will see up and down town San Jose. Even going into Los Gatos and into Saratoga. There are a lot of thefts, car break ins, and people getting robbed. You see a lot of graffiti on hwy 280. San Fransisco you cannot walk safely like you use to on the streets. You see a lot of garbage and people deficating in the streets. You have mentally ill no where to go. Sacramento/Roseville the same thing. Walnut Creek people were going there to shop and that is getting bad to. So please tell me how glamorous it is? The rents/Mortgages keep rising and property taxes keep rising. If anything stop glamorizeing California. Allow other people opportunities that have lived here. Also, the high tech sector has laid off more unhoused people who need affordable living.

Like roads, bridges, unemployment insurance. We all forgot what the unemployment line looked like in Florida in 2020. 😢 so sad. But hey there is always someone who wants something for nothing. I left California in 2020 and have regretted it ever since! I’ve lived in Nevada, Florida, and Colorado. Every time I leave- then come back to CALIFORNIA. Once I’m back- I’ll never leave again! The salaries are unmatched even with the taxes! An iPhone is $1000 in any state- I would rather afford my smart phone than be here where average worker makes 40K…Lessoned learned!!! its why California has 40 million people. But hey let the haters hate. Those of us who know… KNOW! I’ll make more money and learn to survive IN CALIFORNIA than make less money and try to survive! Can’t beat childcare that is family. First, I just want to say thank you so much to you both for being so transparent and well-informed in every video and social media post you provide for all us! Your videos helped me gain valuable insight on the vast careers within the field of nursing and how to properly invest our hard earned dollars to make it go even further! I was born in San Francisco but moved to Roseville in 2000, spending most of my life here until I went back to SF for college and nursing school. I LOVE SF and the Bay Area and it's truly one of the best places to live in California as a nurse and in general. Having a walkable city with good public transport made my experience with my friends and classmates so much more enjoyable (and the commute to clinicals so much easier). Plus, I had AMAZING nursing professors at USF who truly have endless passion and empathy. Since I started nursing school at the beginning of 2020 and COVID, I commuted back and forth from Sac to SF every week, switching between work and clinicals. Through the years, I lived part-time in Midtown, Oak Park, and Land Park and they're all great areas to live in Sac. Like Jason and Monica said, Roseville lacks the diversity that Sacramento or Elk Grove have. However, Roseville is getting more and more diverse as people from the Bay are moving here due to the lower cost of living and better quality public schools. Great place to raise a family. I graduated less than a year ago and my nursing friends who have chosen to stay in SF to work at UCSF, Stanford, etc. are making **BASE** $81/hour with most of them making well over $90/hour because of shift differential. I want to emphasize that these are **new grad nurses** too with raises coming after just 6 months of starting. They all have no problem paying off school loans, paying for their life necessities, and still having more to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Our nursing unions are just that strong! I've decided to move back to Roseville since my family is here, 3 of my siblings are now RNs as well, and I have a great job lined up at one of main hospitals in Sac. I'm also now looking for a slower pace of life. I do have some people in my life who complain about the "high taxes" here and I always have a similar reaction as Jason and Monica at 24:03! You have to look at the numbers. And as Jason brought up in previous videos, we have better protections when it comes to labor laws and staffing ratios. Not everyone can be a nurse. You truly have to come into the profession for the right reasons. BUT if you are one, Northern California is one of the best places to work.
@NursesToRiches
@NursesToRiches 5 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for this informative comment. I work with several nurses who left the Bay area and came to the Sacramento region for the lower cost of living. Like you said, though, Roseville is becoming more and more diverse, but it still has a long way to go, in my opinion. Monica and I were in Sutter Roseville filming some footage for one of our most recent videos, and I did not see a single minority walk into their ER. That's exactly how it was while I worked there. And although I loved working there, I did feel very out of place being one of the only two minorities working there in 2017.
@KuyaRojito

@@NursesToRiches Yes! I completely agree with you. I do hope Roseville becomes even more diverse in the coming years, especially in the healthcare workforce because it not only benefits us employees but also the patients we care for. Thanks again for the amazing content you and Monica continue to create across all your platforms. There are not enough words to express how grateful I am for your videos and how they have opened up my eyes to the possibilities nursing can provide at the bedside and beyond. By the way, I'm loving the new vlog format you two are incorporating (it reminds me of the classic KZfaq I grew up on and enjoyed) and know that I'll be cheering y'all on during your transition back to NY!

Believe it or not, nurses we work with were making $40k to $60k per month during covid because of the abundance of overtime they were giving away. But the best part about this part of California is that we don't have to be signed on for 13-week contracts in order to earn those rates + benefits.
