Beta-blockers are most commonly used to treat hypertension ... but did you know there are many more reasons they are used? Nurses and healthcare providers need to be aware of the uses, the side effects, patient teaching, clinical considerations, and special uses of beta-blockers in conditions from anxiety to glaucoma to ventricular tachycardia. Beta-blockers have a lot to offer.

In this video, we cover the need to know content for nurses caring for patients on beta-blockers or newly prescribed beta-blockers. An exploration into tips to help remember the difference between beta 1 (selective) and beta 2 (nonselective) beta blockers will help you quickly identify how your patient’s medications are working for them and could be potentially the cause of some of their symptoms.
Recall that hypertension is a silent killer and people do not have symptoms. The moment we start treating it, the pharmacological interventions we use will have side effects, and encouragement and education will be key in keeping your patients on track to reduce the risk of cardiac death.

Great info, thanks! I'm on a beta blocker, bisoprolol/Cardiloc for the first time in my life due to Atrial Flutter. Even though I had a trimester of the cardiac cycle in Chiropractic school I needed this as a review. I would still like to go deeper into the issue of adrenal function though.

@@NurseMinder I've had adrenal fatigue in the past as measured on a 4 point lab test. What is the connection, if any, between adrenal fatigue and atrial flutter? Both AF! Is there a chance, if I currently have adrenal fatigue, that if I correct that, the atrial flutter will abate too? I'm asking based upon beta blockers working on adregeneric receptors.

Propranolol and Nadolol are non-selective beta blockers in that they block BOTH B1 and B2 adrenergic receptors...not sure if you've meant to separate them (or if NCLEX teaches it differently) but in my PA program we are taught that NSBB have an antagonistic effect on both types of beta receptors. Thoughts?

Hi Nurse Minder, I got the questions right and I'm not even a med student 😁The video was well presented thanks! Question; I've been taking Atenolol for about 20 years after having several stent surgery's. I do moderate exercise 15-20 minutes daily. I sometimes find I'm winded after exercise and wonder if the Atenolol is actually restricting me from doing a little more? I've had both asthma and treadmill tests recently and they appear OK.
@NurseMinder

If you are just starting back into exercise, you may notice it will take some time to improve that symptom of feeling winded. It sounds like you have brought this up to your medical team and they are working on finding the answers for you

Whats the benefit of a beta 2 blocker over a beta 1 blocker? Why would you want airway constriction? Only thing that confused me, otherwise a great video. Thank you.
@NurseMinder
@NurseMinder 2 жыл бұрын
Beta-1 receptors are located in the heart. When beta-1 receptors are stimulated they increase the heart rate and increase the heart's strength of contraction or contractility. The beta-2 receptors are located in the bronchioles of the lungs and the arteries of the skeletal muscles (source: ems1.com)
@NurseMinder

@soulsborne123

when beta-2 receptors are activated, they cause vasoconstriction in lungs. Therefore when you introduce beta-2 blockers, it should lead to vasodilation.

@NurseMinder 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I had to look them up individually in my drug guide. They both work on cardiac muscles (heart) but propranolol also affects beta 2 receptors (lungs, vessels, and urinary tract). Sometimes when one drug is not working, docs will try another one because it will have a slightly different effect - or a person may respond differently to it
